Past and present studies

I decided to study in my current university for many reasons. The first main reason was the ranking
position as the best of my country in many international rankings, because the position brought
me to look more information about the place. And the second main one was that the areas of
research in physics here are very wide, what could give me a wide range of courses and enable a
multidisciplinary formation. The third was that São Paulo city has a lot of possible things to do and
international people, what would help to shape me as a person with a lot of new experiences. I
chose physics, because I don’t feel happy living without knowing about life, existence and the
universe. I found out that physics was the science area that tries to explain the deepest questions
about the universe doing with more focus and being less confusing than philosophy (at least, it is
what it seems for me, although I still think philosophy is amazing and I believe it will be important
to find answer for these questions) and that physics do not have limitation in the object of study,
because it study every scale, since the smallest things until the largest ones.

Your professional goals

I hope to prepare myself to be able to understand the world very deeply and to help the humanity
to understand it better. So my goal is to become very strong at logical reasoning and to know a lot
about the universe from many different view-points, so I can apply it to do research seeking to
explain the universe even better than we do right now. While I grow in knowledge I have a goal to
impact the world with my job or with volunteer work, because I believe that better explanations of
the world will come with more people trying to understand it, so if I help the humanity I hope that
more people will be able to pursue the same goal.

Working in companies/ industrial companies/ engineering

I got in contact with the junior enterprise of my institute since first year of university. There, I got
better skills in management of groups and in contact with people or in a group work or in a
pronouncement for an audience. The work there also brought me in contact with entrepreneurs
and start-ups showing me innovation thoughts that might be useful for me one day. The
experience in the company teaches me how to become more organized and responsible, because
the company is in our hands and if one of the members makes a fault, it has great implications for
the company and for the whole group, something that university classes do not teach us. The goal
in participating in the junior entrepreneur was to have this new experience of changing from a
passive student to an active worker.

Working in research/academic institutions/universities

Now I’m starting a historical and philosophical research about gravitational waves discovery with
the study of a binary system of pulsars. That’s the start in my academic career and I chose a
philosophical and historical research at first, because my mathematics and physical basis are not
yet prepared to understand the gravitational waves more deeply. I plan to carry out to PhD’s, one
in physics and other in philosophy. I want to do both, because I think that the deepest question
that we try to explain in physics sometimes relays in some axioms that we adopt from the
paradigm of the physical science is use right now, and maybe to answer great question such as the
unification of the quantum theory and the general relativity, the explanation of what happens
inside a black hole or the beginning of the universe might need a revolution in science and this
revolution might destroy the currently paradigm and I want to be able to participate of the
revolution so I cannot be indoctrinated in this paradigm. The subjects that I want to study are close
related with the theoretical unification of the general relativity and quantum mechanics. As it is a
theoretical career, I am not much interested in a institution with great facilities, but in a institution
with great minds to debate and discuss, such as Ecole Polytechnique, MIT, Berkeley, Cal Tech,
Oxford and University of Copenhagen.

Your educational plans

My choice of France is related to the great institutions of education that exist in France and the
cultural learning that I could get living in a country with a lot history such as France. I believe that
this international experience in a place with so many different people from the whole globe can
bring new ways of thinking in my mind and these new ways will help my intellectual development,
because I believe that to explain the universe it is not knowing just logic, but it is also to develop a
good intuition, so when you are stuck in a problem, you find your way around. I'm attracted by
Ecole Polytechnique, because it seems challenger for me. It seems that it will push me faster to the
knowledge that I am seeking. A part of this challenge is the strong math foundation that the Ecole
has. Because I think that math can make my logical reasoning very strong and that math is the
language that can explain the universe. I got also attracted by the international student body that
Ecole has, because it seems to me that I will immerse in place with a lot of cultural differences and
view-points, what is related with innovative thoughts and I want to bring innovation to science,
special in the theoretical part that tries to explain the most fundamental aspects of the universe.
The extracurricular activities that Ecole provides seem also a great attraction, because activities
such as sports and musical learning are proving to generate great benefits for health and for
intellectual development. My university has a double degree agreement with Ecole and that also
facilitates my connection with the Ecole. I got to know about the possibility to study in Ecole,
because a teacher told me during a conversation. He said that I got great chances to study there
and that it would be a unique opportunity for my development. Particularly talking about the
curriculum, I got very attracted to the multidisciplinary curriculum and the great freedom to
choose the focus of my studies in there, not re-talking about math previous cited.

Conclusion: So my motivations were already cited, however I can’t finish it without saying that this
is a unique opportunity for me and that’s why I will do my best to become a student of Ecole and
to be one of the best students that Ecole already had. And I know that will be hard, because Ecole
has great names in their alumni list such as Cauchy, Becquerel, Carnot, Comte and many others,
but it is just one more challenge.
