A GLOBAL LEADER
SUPPLYING WORLD-CLASS EMULSIONS

Celanese manufactures a broad range of

high-performance emulsion polymers in all three
major regions of the world. Our emulsion plants
are located across Europe, North America, China
and Singapore, the site of our newest facility,
to supply coatings products globally. Our quality
control teams and global standards ensure supply
reliability all over the world.

Innovation Drives our Business.

THE CELANESE COMMITMENT TO ASIA
HEAVILY INVESTING IN THE REGION

Celanese has a long-term commitment to the Asian region dating back decades.
Growth in the Asian region, and China in particular, has always been a key strategy for Celanese.

The Celanese Nanjing (China) chemical complex is Celanese’s largest integrated complex in the world.
The site is a world-class manufacturing facility with numerous operating units for three of our
businesses that share infrastructure and resources.

Celanese is committed to social responsibility with a strong emphasis on environmental stewardship and
sustainable development. We are working to expand a positive site-level and collective impact worldwide through
an increased emphasis on direct investment and local employee engagement. Celanese promotes many
volunteer opportunities across the globe during our “Global Impact Week,” aligning with the company’s value
of “Improving the World.”

WORLD-CLASS EMULSIONS FACILITY

The Nanjing site is integrated from acetic acid to
vinyl acetate monomer (VAM), a key raw material
for emulsion vinyl-based polymers. This integration
ensures reliable supply. The emulsions plant includes
high-pressure reactors to synthesize state-of-the-art
vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) emulsions. The facility
also includes atmospheric reactors to manufacture
high-performance homopolymers, copolymers and
pure acrylic emulsions. All emulsion products meet
our global quality standards. Celanese Shanghai Commercial and Technology Center

In June 2011, Celanese Emulsions completed its VAE

expansion in Nanjing, doubling our VAE capacities
to serve the growing demand in the Asian region.
The third VAE facility that opened in Singapore
in 2016 allows us to better serve the Asian region’s
growing market.

The Celanese Shanghai Commercial and Technology

Center officially opened in January 2011, further
expanding our presence in the area. This facility serves
as the headquarters for Celanese Asia and includes
our emulsions business and the region’s customer
application development labs and research center.
Hundreds of Celanese scientists, design engineers
Celanese Nanjing Integrated Chemical Complex
and technical experts work together under one roof
in this new, state-of-the-art facility.

LEADING THE ECO-FRIENDLY CHARGE
Celanese has been at the forefront of emulsion Emission behavior of optimized FOCUS ON TAP

• Detectable emissions after 28 days are far below

the limit of 1000 μg/m3 necessary to achieve the
A+ qualification according the French labeling.

• The 3 day limit ( 300 μg/m3) for some non-mandatory

labels (like TÜV) can also be achieved by using VAE as
binder for low-emission paints.

Around the world, the paint and coatings industry is

under immense pressure to reduce VOC emissions.
Although most interior decorative paints are
already waterborne, many formulations based
on hard polymer emulsions still contain
co-solvents and plasticizers, affecting the
indoor air quality of the painted rooms.
The use of soft VAE emulsions with
Minimum Film-Forming (MFFT) 0°C
enables the formulation of paints
without any solvents and plasticizers.
Many of these paints can meet
existing VOC regulations and
standards for ecological labels
across Europe and the U.S. Finally,
our emulsions assist these paints
to fulfill the stricter emissions
limits regarding the total VOC
(TVOC) evaluation in chamber
tests according to ISO 16000-9.

4
THINK GREEN.
THINK VAE.
VAE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND
“PEOPLE-FRIENDLY” PAINTS
The first action paint formulators can take to
create environmentally-friendly paints is the
reduction of the VOC (volatile organic compound)
content. It is not as easy as simply removing the
solvent or coalescing agents, since the formulator
must compensate for the loss of its main film former
and for many performance properties such as washability.

Celanese introduced vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) emulsions

for low-emission paints more than a decade ago.
Through hydroplastification, the water in the paint actually becomes
the solvent required for the film formation process.

“It is possible to make a solvent-free, very low-VOC interior paint that meets the needs of the paint formulator,
the painter and the homeowner: Start with VAE emulsions from Celanese.”

Hydroplastification Effect This is possible because the VAE copolymers have

with VAE Copolymers a wide delta between their MFFT and the Tg.
This allows good film formation without the addition
35 of solvents and plasticizers because of the inherently
VAE Copolymer low MFFT.
