GENERATOR CIRCUIT BREAKER (GCB)

1.01.00 CODES AND STANDARDS


1.01.01 All standards, specifications and codes of practice referred to herein shall
be the latest editions including all applicable official amendments. In case
of conflict between this specification and those (IS codes, standards, etc.)
referred to herein, the former shall prevail. All work shall be carried out as
per the following standards/ codes as applicable.

1.02.01 Generator circuit breaker shall be provided in single phase enclosures,


all fully assembled on a common frame with operating mechanisms,
supervisory and control equipment.

1.02.02 The voltage class of the Generator circuit breaker shall be same as that
of the generator.

1.02.03 The rated continuous current rating of the Generator circuit breaker shall
be arrived at considering the maximum output of the generator under
VWO (693MW) conditions and at specified minimum voltage.

1.02.04 The Generator Circuit Breaker (GCB) shall be installed in indoor and
connected to Generator busduct (Isolated Phase) on both sides. Suitable
provisions shall be made for connection with Isolated Phase Busduct
(IPBD) through flexible connection.

1.02.05 The GCB movement during short circuit shall be restricted so as to limit
the stresses on GCB support insulators within their capabilities.

1.02.06 Support structure shall be designed to withstand the dynamic as well as


static load of the GCB. Design calculations of support structure shall be
furnished for Owner's approval.

1.02.07 The Generator circuit breaker shall be integrated with series


disconnector switch, one earth switch, grounding switches in three single
phase enclosures and voltage transformer.

1.02.08 The short time and momentary current rating of the Generator circuit
breaker shall be decided as follows:

a) Short time current rating for 1 second: Higher of

i) The short circuit current contribution from generator

OR

ii) The short circuit current contribution from 400kV system


through generator transformer (400kV system fault level 40kA)
Plus (+)

Contribution of 11kV auxiliary system through unit


transformers.

b) Momentary current rating: 2.55 times the short time current rating
arrived as above.

c) Rated short circuit current is fixed based on the system short circuit
current calculations.

1.02.09 The basic switchgear module shall include the following minimum
equipment but shall not be limited to the same.

a) Circuit breaker with disconnector for series isolation (disconnector


on the Generator Transformer side).

b) Grounding switches fitted both sides of unit and to all three phases.

c) Voltage transformers with two secondary windings: one per phase


on transformer side.

1.02.10 The system shall be extended by all of the following items:

a) A switched short circuiting connection between the power circuit


breaker and the series disconnector.

b) A manually fitted grounding link for the above short circuiting


connection.

1.02.11 The GCB shall be of three 1-Ф, 22kV, metal enclosed, indoor and free
standing type, hydraulic spring operated and SF6 gas shall be the arc
quenching medium. It shall be provided with three pole gang operation
and antipumping feature. The Generator circuit breaker shall use SF6
gas both as its arc-extinguishing medium as well as for internal
insulation. It shall be designed with separate contact systems for the
current breaking and current carrying functions. Semaphore position
indicators shall be provided for local indication of the position of the
circuit breaker. The time between the first and last pole to open or close
shall not exceed 2 ms. The circuit breaker shall be capable of
interrupting currents under out-of-phase conditions with out-of-phase
angles upto 180O.

1.02.12 The GCB enclosure shall be non-magnetic aluminium alloy, minimum


flux, and isolated phase type and capable of carrying the induced sheath
current equal to the current ratings specified with degree of protection
IP-42.

a) In order to avoid pollution due to ingress of dust and moisture, the


GCB enclosure shall be designed to allow air tightness and to
withstand a slight internal overpressure.

b) Inspection windows shall be provided in each single phase


enclosure to allow visual checks of the individual GCB assemblies’
position

1.02.13 Insulators shall be of high strength, fine glazed porcelain or epoxy resin
type.

1.02.14 SF6 gas density monitor for each phase shall be provided monitoring the
three phases of the circuit-breaker. Necessary interlocks are to be
arranged to prevent breaker operation on fall of SF6 gas density.

a) The gas density monitor shall be equipped with a temperature


compensated density switch. One contact of the density switch
shall be provided to indicate the gas density level ‘low’ where
refilling of the gas volume is required. Two additional contacts shall
be provided, connected to each trip circuit, to prevent tripping of the
circuit breaker when gas density falls below the critical level.

1.02.15 A series disconnector shall be provided on the transformer side in series


to the circuit breaker. The disconnector shall be telescope unit with a
sliding tubular contact, with its hinged point on the transformer side and
with an operating mechanism which operates through a mechanical
linkage of all three poles. The isolating gap shall be in air atmospheric
pressure and a window shall be provided in the GCB system enclosure
to allow visual checking of its position. The control of the disconnector
including the interlocking circuit shall be accommodated in the GCB
system control cubicle. A local/remote switch and push-buttons for local
control shall be provided.

1.02.16 Grounding switches shall be provided on both sides of the switchgear


unit. They shall be of blade type, air insulated, gang operated with motor
drive, with their hinge point connected to earth and shall be integrated
together with the circuit breaker and disconnector into each of the single
phase tubular aluminium enclosure, forming a straight section in the run
of the IPB. The earthing switches operation shall be interlocked with the
circuit breaker and disconnector. The connections and the switches shall
be rated for full fault current. The ground connections shall be made via

the switchgear enclosure to the housings of the isolated phase busbars


and then to their grounding connection.

1.02.17 The short-circuiting connection with switch shall facilitate an unearthed


three phase short-circuit on generator side of the GCB-system unit. A
short-circuit bar can be installed manually between the interrupter and
line disconnect switch. By closing the breaker, a three-phase short-
circuit can be established. The short circuiting disconnector and its
connections shall be designed to expedite the testing and adjustment of
the power plant protection system. Closure of the disconnector shall
establish a three phase short circuit on to the generator connections but
without ground to save time, both during initial commissioning, as well
as, when routine testing the protective relaying.

1.02.18 The Operating mechanism of disconnector and earthing switches shall


be operated by a 3-Ф motor, of heavy duty construction type and shall
be designed to complete its normal travel to either ‘open’ or ‘close’
position, once started, without holding the control switch continuously in
that position. Key interlocking shall be provided to allow different modes
of operation to be selected.

1.02.19 Copper/stainless steel earthing pads shall be provided on the GCB,


close to earth level. For the control cubicle, adequate earthing facility
shall be provided.

1.02.20 For circuit breaker, two trip coils shall be provided. Upon loss of drive
energy, control power supply or SF6 gas, the breaker shall remain in
fully closed or open position.

1.02.21 The circuit breaker with contacts open and insulating gas at atmospheric
pressure shall be capable of withstanding three times the phase-to-
ground voltage; to assure that the circuit breaker in the open position is
capable of withstanding voltages under conditions where the two
systems are out-of-phase. All parts of the insulation structure, including
those between phases to earth and across the open contacts, shall be of
inherently stable nature with a minimum susceptibility to dielectric
tracking

1.02.22 The control cubicle shall accommodate all necessary equipment for
local/remote changeover facilities, control, monitoring, supervision and
interlocking of the system. The degree of protection shall be IP-42.

a) The control cubicle shall be provided with conventional hard wired


system. With cross-section 1.5mm2 for internal wiring, 2.5mm2 for
motor circuits and 6mm2 for instrument transformer. Installation of
the control cubicle shall be next to the breaker.

1.02.23 Each circuit-breaker shall be equipped with

a) an operation counter

b) a SF6 density monitor

c) a reliable, mechanical position indicator to indicate the open or


closed position of the circuit-breaker

d) a manual operation device for maintenance purposes

1.02.24 The voltage transformers shall be of 1-Ф cast resin type with two
secondary windings. The secondary windings shall be permanently
wired to terminal blocks into the GCB system control cubicle. The
voltage transformers shall be accessible through the removed top cover
of the GCB system enclosures.

1.03.00 TESTS

1.03.01 All routine tests as per IEC-60056 and equipment specification shall be
conducted on each of the generator circuit breaker.

a) Power frequency voltage withstand dry tests on the main circuit.

b) Voltage withstand tests on control and auxiliary circuits

c) Measurement of the resistance of the main circuit.

d) Mechanical operating tests.

e) Design and visual checks.

f) Dielectric tests on the main circuit

g) Dielectric tests on auxiliary and control circuits

h) Timing tests and recording the switching times and movement of


breaker contacts

i) Functional tests of individual components

j) Leakage test of phase enclosures

k) SF6-gas leakage test.

1.03.02 Following Type tested certificates shall be furnished. The type tests
conducted for the equipment Supplied/Erected & Commissioned as per
the scope shall not be beyond five years from the date of
Supply/Services. In case type test certificates are not available for the
equipment Supplied/Erected & Commissioned as per the scope,
following type tests shall be conducted on each type & rating of the
equipment:

a) Rated dielectric strength tests

i) Rated low frequency withstand voltage dry test.

ii) Rated full wave impulse withstand voltage test.

b) Short circuit rating and transient recovery voltage tests

i) Test for rated symmetrical short circuit current interrupting


capability, duty cycle and rated transient recovery voltage
parameters.

ii) Test for rated closing, latching and short time current carrying
capability.

iii) Test for rated Generator source asymmetrical short circuit


interrupting capability.

c) Load current switching test

d) Out of phase switching current tests

e) Rated excitation current switching tests.

f) Type tests and oscillographic test records for closing and tripping
timings for generator circuit breaker of the rating Supplied/Erected
& Commissioned as per the scope.

g) Rated continuous current carrying tests

h) Mechanical endurance life tests.

i) Noise level tests.
