Title: CNC Plasma Cutter Using Arduino

Date: July 9, 2019
Abstract
Accuracy and difficulty in manual cutting of metal plates has long been a problem to metal fabrication
especially in forming complex 2D shapes. Due to these problems, many machines have been invented
in order to solve the said issues. Some of these are milling, plasma and laser cutting machines that
were created in order to cut metal plates faster and easier. CNC machines were also made and are
automated to control different industrial machines, making the results more accurate and precise. With
these, the study aims to fabricate a plasma cutting machine applied with CNC (Computer Numerical
Control) for the fabrication in machine shop and prototyping of some parts that requires 2D metal plate
cutting; as well as for demonstration purposes to give knowledge and experience to students about
CNC applied machines. The movement of the plasma cutter torch will be actuated by a mechanism
(moved by motors) designed to be controlled by the Arduino microcontroller. A computer is used to
create 2D CAD designs for the shape to be cut. Then a software is used for the GRBL firmware of
Arduino to create G-codes that are sent and are executed by the microcontroller, controlling the motors
which in turn moves the torch to guide it in cutting the designed shape.
