Part - A: Theory

Q1. With relevant sketches, define the following with respect to sinusoidal signals:
(i) Peak Value; (ii) Period; (iii) Frequency; (iv) Angular Frequency; (v) Phase; (vi) Phase difference,
phase lead and phase lag;
Q2a. Define the following with respect to sinusoidal signals.
Caution: DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE SINUSOID IS A CURRENT!
(i) Average value; (ii) RMS value; (iii) Peak factor; (iv) Form factor.
Q2b. If the sinusoid is a current, i(t) = Im sin (ωt), give an interpretation for its (i) Average value; and (ii)
RMS value.
Q3. For each of the following signals, obtain expressions for (i) Average value; (ii) RMS value; (iii) Peak
factor; and (iv) Form factor.
(a) Sinusoid; (b) Full rectified sinusoid; and (c) Half rectified sinusoid
Q4. Explain ‘phasor representation of sinusoids’. What are the conventions?
Q5. Consider a sinusoidal emf source, v(t) = Vm sin (ωt). Derive the phase relationships between the drop
across and the current through each of R, L & C. Sketch (i) the complete phasor diagram; and (ii) voltage
& current waveforms for each case.
Q6. In the following circuits supplied by an alternating emf, v(t) = Vm sin (ωt), find expressions for the
supply current and the drops across each element: (a) R-L series circuit; and (b) R-C series circuit. Sketch
the complete phasor diagram in each case.
Q7. With the help of suitable circuits, explain ‘reactance’, ‘impedance’ and ‘admittance’. Give their
relationships. Mention their SI units.
Q8. In an R-L-C series circuit supplied by an alternating emf, v(t) = Vm sin (ωt), find expressions for the
supply current, i(t), in the following three cases: (a) XL > XC; (b) XL < XC; and (c) XL = XC. In each case,
sketch the complete phasor diagram indicating all voltages and the current.
Q9. Define ‘total OR complex power’, ‘active power’, ‘reactive power’ and ‘apparent power’. Mention
their SI units.
Q10. Derive expressions for each of active, reactive and complex powers when an impedance, Z = R + jX,
carries a current I.
Q11. What is ‘power factor’ in ac systems?
Q12. Show that the average power consumed in (i) a pure capacitor; and (ii) a pure inductor is zero. {Hence,
an inductor and a capacitor are lossless.}
Q13. What are the advantages of ac systems over dc systems?
Q14. With a neat schematic, explain the principle of generation of 1-ϕ sinusoidal emf.
