The Company

Kärntner Montanindustrie GmbH (KMI) is an Austrian

company, founded in 1932. The company owns micaceous
iron oxide mines and mineral processing facilities. The
headquarters are in the castle of Wolfsberg, the regional
capital. The mine and processing plant are located not far
from that in Waldenstein, both in the State of Carinthia.

The Waldenstein Mine

KMI‘s mine at Waldenstein is

a well-known source of Micaceous Iron Oxide (MIO)
with characteristic lamellar structure and high purity.

The reserves are sufficient for the next decades. The mine is an
underground operation, which enables an all-season
excavation.

The Processing Plant

KMI‘s processing plant is

in vicinity to the MIO mine.

The MIO crude ore and other raw materials are grinded,
separated and classified by special techniques. Due to
continuous development of the beneficiation know-how,
the special structures of the mineral particles are
maintained – independent from fineness.

KMI – an Expert in Micronization

KMI has long-term expertise

in delamination of minerals.
Further investments in
state-of-the-art grinding
technology enabled the
micronization of micaceous iron oxide and functional
minerals. These products are the finest on world markets.
Today, KMI is acknowledged as the world leader in MIO-
technology, research and development.

The Mineral

Waldenstein ore contains a

natural iron oxide (Fe2O3)
which distinguishes it from
other iron ores with its
metallic grey lustre.

Its lamellar structure – resembling that of mica – has

also given it its name:
Micaceous Iron Oxide (MIO)

MIO – a Rare Mineral
Mineralogy: Hematite
Chem. formula: Fe2O3 (iron-III-oxide)
Color: grey to reddish
brown, metallic
Density: 4,8 g/cm³
Hardness: 6,0–6,5 Mohs

Micaceous iron oxides (MIO) are a rare mineral.

Significant resources are known in Europe (Austria), Asia
(China), Australia and Africa. There are major differences in
mineralogy, lamellarity and iron content between these
sources.

International Standards for MIO

The most important quality criteria

according to EN ISO 10601 and ASTM 5532 are:

Content of lamellar particles

(minimum 65% for grade A, EN ISO 10601)
Fe2O3 content (min 85%)
Color of product (grey with metallic sheen)
Particle size distribution (PSD)

KMI has a strong focus to Grade A products.
