2 INTRODUCTION
2.1 Using the manual
The manual is written for service personnel in the High Voltage (HV) power line environment. All
existing safety instructions in the client's environment have to be observed and only trained and
instructed personnel should work with the equipment. The manual provides the necessary
instructions for all the steps in the life-cycle of the equipment, e.g. from transport, storage,
commissioning to maintenance. Please refer to the appropriate section for the particular step or
function.
PLC is mainly used to reliably transmit speech, energy management data and power system
protection signals. In order to meet the varying requirements of power utilities when constructing a
new power system or extending an existing one, PLC equipment must be compatible and of
modular design.
• The MCD80 modular coupling devices form the interface between the HV line and the PLC
equipment and fully comply with the above requirements with respect to compatibility and
flexibility.
• The units of the MCD80 family provide optimum PLC end-to-end links, RF through-connections
and junction networks on all HV transmission systems.
• All MCD80 devices conform to the latest IEC and ANSI recommendations.
• The PLC coupling device together with the CC/CVT form a filter which accepts the carrier
frequency signals and rejects the power system frequency. The following explanation of the
principle of the coupling device assumes a phase-to-ground coupling (PLC signals can be
coupled to one or more phases of the power system). The basic circuit diagram is shown below.
• A complete coupling comprises a line trap to prevent the PLC signals from being short-circuited
by the substation and a coupling filter formed by the coupling capacitor or capacitive voltage
transformer and the coupling device.
Frequently, the coupling device is referred to as a coupling filter. Its purpose is to permit the
PLC signal to pass, but reject the power system frequency and protect the communications
equipment from the power system voltage and transient over voltages caused by switching
operations and atmospheric discharges.

4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
4.1 Coupling principles
In practice, PLC coupling is a complex problem since the units at both ends of the HV line have to
be optimised for the conditions prevailing there. In the case of long lines with high attenuation, an
analysis of the line is necessary to determine the arrangement with the most preferable
transmission characteristics. ABB has years of experience in conducting such analysis. Analysis is
generally not necessary for short or non-transposed lines.
For a horizontal conductor configuration, the centre phase is chosen for phase-to-ground coupling
and two adjacent phases for phase-to-phase coupling. In the case of configurations with a vertical
distribution, phases as high and as close as possible should be chosen. How many phases are
used is largely a question of the reliability requested for the PLC link.
The characteristic impedance for HV cables is much lower and has to be calculated in each
individual case.
The standard version of the MCD80 coupling device consists of the filter module with transformer,
a drain coil and a surge arrester mounted in an enclosure with an external earth switch, see
picture:
The components of the MCD80 coupling system are fitted in a weatherproof polyester case
reinforced with glass fibre mats and ventilated via water proof vents. This enclosure meets the
requirements of protection class IP54 according to IEC60529. The colour of the enclosure is grey
(RAL7032). There is no possibility of rust or corrosion. The door is fitted with a synthetic seal and
pressed firmly against the housing by two latches so that it is hermetically sealed. The latches are
opened and closed using a special key which can be removed to prevent unauthorised access to
the unit.
A stainless steel base plate is used for fixing the basic units and the subassemblies on welded
bolts. Two subassemblies can be additionally fitted in one coupling device case, but no more than
one hybrid transformer. All subassemblies are secured with captive screws.
The primary (for the connection to the CC/CVT) and earth (for the connection to system earth)
terminals are M10 bolts on the left of the unit. The connections to the PLC equipment enter via four
polyester cable glands (2x M20 and 2x M25) at the bottom of the housing. Connection of the
equipment cable is made via unmistakably numbered terminals, with the outer conductor
additionally taken to the equipment earth via a clamp. The connection with the lower designation
number of each pair of terminals is taken to the equipment earth.
The coils and transformers impregnated under vacuum ensure that there is no impairment of
transmission characteristics even under unfavourable climatic conditions and therefore no
additional heating is required in this case.
In a phase-to-phase or intersystem scheme, one of the two coupling devices includes a hybrid
transformer.
The matching and galvanic isolating transformer is designed for a high power frequency and
transients withstand voltage providing an adequate safety margin for the insulation between the
primary (HV line-side) and secondary (PLC equipment-side) terminals.
The power frequency current through the CC/CVT caused by the system voltage is conducted to
earth via a drain coil. The used drain coil has high thermal and short-time current ratings.
The earth switch is rated for a high short-time current. This switch must be closed during
adjustments in the tuning device for safety reasons. Position of externally mounted earth switch is
clearly visible from distance.
Safety with respect to electrical hazards is further enhanced by the use of the insulating fibreglass
reinforced polyester enclosure.
The high pass coupling filters are the most versatile units which can be programmed on site for
different coupling capacitance values, line impedance and equipment impedance.
For special low bandwidth or line impedances, individually manufactured band pass coupling
devices are available.
Additional modules such as attenuators, impedance transformers and separating filters fit into the
family of MCD80.
The system comprises the following briefly described units and modules:
The high pass filter is formed by the CC/TCT connected in series with the adjustable capacitor, the
adjustable drain coil and the shunt inductance. A transformer with taps is used for potential
separation between line-side and equipment-side and for proper impedance matching.
The circuit board is mounted in the standard enclosure which is equipped with earth switch and
surge arrester. The unit forms a complete PLC coupling system for phase-to-ground coupling in
conjunction with the associated CC/CVT. In the enclosure is sufficient space for mounting of two
optional modules.
This filter has to be programmed on site by means of strap settings for the capacitance value of
associated CC/CVT, line-side impedance and PLC equipment-side impedance according to the
setting table. For applications with lower line impedances or higher upper frequency limits special
programming tables are available on request.
This unit consists of a high pass coupling device A9BS with a hybrid transformer module A1AC
mounted inside the enclosure.
Phase-to-phase or intersystem coupling requires push-pull signal injection into the HV lines. The
hybrid transformer is requested to create the push-pull signal for phase-to-phase or intersystem
coupling and for decoupling of the two phases.
For phase-to-phase high pass coupling a unit A9BS and A9BT are needed at each line end.
The band pass filter is formed by the CC/CVT connected in series with a capacitor and inductance
and a L/C combination on the equipment-side. A transformer is used for potential separation
between line-side and equipment-side and for proper impedance matching. The series capacitor
prevents the power frequency currents from saturation of the ferrite core of transformer.
In special cases the equipment-side matching can be improved by resistors in series to CC/CVT.
The circuit board is mounted in the standard enclosure, which is equipped with earth switch, surge
arrester and drain coil. The unit forms a complete PLC coupling system for phase-to-ground
coupling in conjunction with the associated CC/CVT respectively. In the enclosure is sufficient
space for mounting of two optional modules.
This type of filter is individually manufactured for a fixed frequency band. No programming on site
is necessary. The band pass filter A9BP is used in frequency or line-side impedance ranges which
cannot be covered by the standard high pass filters. Examples of such applications are coupling to
cables or coupling to long overhead lines, when PLC channels have to be located to low
frequencies due to line attenuation reasons.
This unit consists of a band pass coupling device A9BP with a hybrid transformer module A1AC
mounted inside the enclosure.
Phase-to-phase or intersystem coupling requires push-pull signal injection into the HV lines. The
hybrid transformer is requested to create a push-pull signal for phase-to-phase or intersystem
coupling and for decoupling of the two phases.
For phase-to-phase band pass coupling a unit A9BP and A9BR are needed at each line end.
The hybrid transformer module A1AC is one of the optional modules which can be mounted inside
of the MCD80 enclosure.
The standard version (Z2 = 75...125 Ω) is used for generation of push-pull signal and for transit
circuits. For paralleling of PLC terminals only, versions with specific equipment impedances shall
be used.
The attenuator module A1AD is one of the optional modules which can be mounted inside of the
MCD80 enclosure.
It is used for improvement of matching conditions between PLC terminal and HV line. The return
loss on equipment-side is thereby increased by twice the insertion loss of the attenuator used. The
improvement is valid for the whole frequency range.
The standard attenuator module A1AD is of π-type design and available for 3dB and 5dB
attenuation at 75Ω nominal impedance.
The X-type design of attenuator module A1AD is the high power solution which is used if many
PLC terminals are connected in parallel. The 3dB version is used if more than 7 ETL640 or 4
ETL680 equipment are connected in parallel to the MCD80 and the 5dB version of X-type design of
attenuator module A1AD is only used if more than 5 ETL640 or 3 ETL680 equipment are
connected in parallel to the MCD80.
The series resistor version of attenuator module A1AD is used for T-lines, which have to be
broadband terminated at nominal impedance to prevent reflection from line end. An alternative
solution to prevent reflection from a T-line is the insertion of line traps in the T-line at the junction.
The impedance transformer module A1AE is one of the optional modules which can be mounted
inside of the MCD80 enclosure.
The high pass coupling device A9BS/A9BT is programmable for equipment-side impedance of 75Ω
or 125Ω unbalanced.
The module A1AE is used for matching to other equipment-side impedances such as 50Ω
unbalanced or 150Ω balanced and is individually manufactured.
The auxiliary double band pass filter module A1AK is one of the optional modules which can be
mounted inside of the MCD80 enclosure.
The band pass coupling filters A9BP and A9BR are transformed to double band pass filters by
means of A1AK modules. This type of coupling may have benefits when PLC channel frequencies
are very distinctive and CC/CVT with a smaller capacitance value may be used.
The auxiliary double band pass filter module A1AK is individually manufactured and delivered
together with associated band pass coupling devices A9BP/A9BR.
The separating filter is used to directionally separate or combine PLC channels when low signal
attenuation in the pass band is of importance. Low-pass/high-pass version and band-pass/band-
stop version are available.
Separating filters are frequency selective circuits in contrast to hybrid transformers, which can be
used for separation and combination of PLC channels, too. Separating filters are used on the
equipment-side. The separating filters are individually designed and manufactured.
Separating filter A9CG has same electrical characteristics as A9CA, but is mounted on a plate with
four UHF-sockets and intended for indoor use inside the PLC equipment cabinet.

6.2 Unpacking
When unpacking the coupling devices type MCD80 please care for all mounting material and tools
attached to the packing.
In some special cases surge arrester has to be mounted on the external terminals of MCD80
enclosure. This surge arrester is placed separately in the polystyrene cover for transportation and
shall be mounted to the terminals of the earthing blade of the coupling device according to the
mounting instruction.
6.3 Storage
The PLC coupling devices type MCD80 are shipped in a cardboard box suitable for indoor storage
for reasonable periods of time. The temperature range during storage shall be between -40°C and
+70°C.
7 INSTALLATION
7.1 Safety information
The following procedure shall be followed for installation of coupling devices MCD80:
• Check rating plate of coupling device MCD80 intended to be installed. Make sure that type is
correct and frequency range of connected PLC signals are within the tuning frequencies of the
coupling device.
• Program strap settings according to programming table, if coupling devices type A9BS or A9BT
are being used.
The band pass coupling devices type A9BP and A9BR are manufactured project specific for a
fixed frequency range, impedance and capacitance value of CC/CVT and need not to be
programmed.
• Open the earth switch and check the drain coil continuity of the MCD80 device by means of a
DC resistance measurement. The DC resistance value measured between the primary and
earth terminals (corresponds to terminals of earth switch) shall be less than 1Ω for high pass
filters A9BS/A9BT and less than 10Ω for band pass filters A9BP/A9BR.
• Close the earth switch of the MCD80 device.
• Connect the MCD80 earth terminal to the station earth.
Use a copper conductor of at least 50mm2 cross section for the connection between the earth
terminal of the MCD80 box (lower bushing marked with earth symbol) and the station system
earth.
• Fix the MCD80 coupling device to the steel structure of the CC/CVT by means of the mounting
material enclosed in the packing.
• Consult the instruction manual of the CC/CVT manufacturer for its low voltage terminal (PLC).
Check whether CC/CVT is equipped with own safety circuit composed by drain coil, earth
switch and surge arrester. Please consider that:
The inherent self capacitance of metal-oxide surge arresters may deteriorate the filter
performance of the coupling device.
The low inductance drain coils may influence the filter performance of band pass filter device.
• Fix auxiliary earthing connection of at least 50mm2 copper cross-section to the low voltage
terminal of CC/CVT.
• Connect the low voltage terminal of CC/CVT with MCD80 primary terminal (upper bushing of
MCD80 box) by means of cable or solid conductor of at least 16mm2 cross-section (Isolation:
1000V, Test Voltage: 3.5kVrms, 1 min.).
Do not disconnect auxiliary earth. Do not use screened/shielded cables.
• Connect the HF-cables according to the schemes applicable for the requested application.
• Remove auxiliary earthing connection to the low voltage terminal of CC/CVT.
There are various local regulations as well as company regulations for installation of PLC coupling
equipment which shall be applied.
• The armouring and the sheath of the coaxial cable connecting the coupling device MCD80 with
the PLC equipment in the control room shall be connected to station earth at control room, only.
• The distance between MCD80 coupling device and PLC terminal of CC/CVT shall be as short
as possible.
A minimum spacing of 5 cm between conductor and earthed steel structure shall be maintained
for reduced stray capacitance.
No shielded wire shall be used for connection between CC/CVT and MCD80.
• In case CC/CVT has his own protective device (drain coil, surge arrester and earth switch) it
shall be verified by return loss and insertion loss measurements that these elements do not
deteriorate the performance of the PLC coupling devices.
8 COMMISSIONING
8.1 Safety information
8.2 General
8.2.1 Definitions
A complete PLC coupling system consists of the following components:
For verification of the performance of the PLC coupling system in a HV substation following tests
are recommended to be carried out within used frequency range:
Return loss:
The degree of matching between two units is indicated by the return loss value which is defined for
a four terminal network according to the following formula:
R0
Z = R+jX Z1
U0
The formula gives the return loss for the primary side of the four terminal network. Please consider
that this value may be influenced by the degree of matching on the secondary side of the four
terminal network i.e. the value of Z1.
For matching between secondary terminal of coupling device and HV line, IEC 60481 specifies a
return loss value of not less than 12 dB.
Composite loss:
The composite loss value is the second important characteristic of a PLC coupling system. The
total composite loss of a PLC coupling is composed by the attenuation of the cable from equipment
room to coupling device, the attenuation of the coupling filter and the tapping loss of the line trap.
This composite loss test additionally indicates for phase-to-phase couplings whether the push-pull
condition is maintained.
Zq
U0 U1 Z1
The voltage level U1 measured in dBu can directly be read as composite loss in dB, if the source
voltage U0 is adjusted to following level:
⎛ Zq ⎞
U 0= 20 ⋅ log ⎜ 2 ⋅ ⎟ (in dBu)
⎜ Z ⎟
⎝ 1 ⎠
⎛ Z 2 ⎞⎟
U 0= 20 ⋅ log ⎜⎜ 2 ⋅ (dBu)
⎝ Z1 ⎟⎠
⎛ Z 2 ⎞⎟
U 0= 20 ⋅ log ⎜⎜ 2 ⋅ ⎟ [dBu]
⎝ 2 ⋅ Z1 ⎠
Test procedure:
1. Close earth switches on coupling devices.
2. Fix auxiliary earthing connections of at least 50mm2 copper cross-section to low voltage
terminals of CC/CVT.
3. Remove connections between primary terminals of coupling devices (upper terminal of the

impedances Z1 to primary terminals of coupling devices (upper terminal of earthing blade)
according to Fig. 29 or 30 respectively. Use values of CD and Z1 according to rating plate of
used coupling devices.
5. Open blades of earth switches on coupling devices.
6. Set voltage level U0 of frequency generator to the value given in the above table. Sweep
frequency of generator in a sufficient number of steps through the tuning band and record
measured voltages in test report.

carried out at the opposite substation.
In order to avoid interference from other signals on the line, measurement shall be performed
frequency selective with appropriate test equipment. Test personnel need to be present in both
substations during these tests.
