2 INTRODUCTION
2.1 Using the manual
The manual is written for service personnel in the High Voltage (HV) power line environment. All
existing safety instructions in the client's environment have to be observed and only trained and
instructed personnel should work with the equipment. The manual provides the necessary
instructions for all the steps in the life-cycle of the equipment, e.g. from transport, storage,
commissioning to maintenance. Please refer to the appropriate section for the particular step or
function.

2.2 Application of the MCD80

Power Line Carrier (PLC) systems are used for communication on HV lines between power system
control centres, power stations and substations. The PLC signal has to be coupled to the HV line
by means of PLC coupling equipment. The PLC coupling equipment comprises of coupling device
MCD80, coupling capacitor (CC) or capacitive voltage transformer (CVT) and line trap (LT).

2.3 Requirements to be met by the service personnel

• Service personnel must read and understand the instruction manual before working with the
MCD80 equipment.
• This product may only be installed by individuals who have received training in procedures for
installing equipment on HV lines and on PLC coupling equipment.
• The service personnel must strictly follow all precautions and warnings which could cause
personnel injury or damage to the equipment.

2.4 Guarantee provisions

The manufacturer disclaims any responsibility for hazards and material damage, if the equipment is
operated other than for its intended use as described in this manual or if the equipment is serviced
by non qualified personnel.

2.5 General information about PLC Coupling

PLC links supplied by ABB form the backbone of power utility communication systems in all parts
of the world. As an economical means of transmitting information and data, PLC has made an
important contribution to power system control for many years.

PLC is mainly used to reliably transmit speech, energy management data and power system
protection signals. In order to meet the varying requirements of power utilities when constructing a
new power system or extending an existing one, PLC equipment must be compatible and of
modular design.

The modular MCD80 family:

• The MCD80 modular coupling devices form the interface between the HV line and the PLC
equipment and fully comply with the above requirements with respect to compatibility and
flexibility.
• The units of the MCD80 family provide optimum PLC end-to-end links, RF through-connections
and junction networks on all HV transmission systems.
• All MCD80 devices conform to the latest IEC and ANSI recommendations.

Edition C Language: EN Page: 2-3

ABB
Instruction Manual MCD80 HENF 90891

Task performed by a coupling device:

• The PLC coupling device together with the CC/CVT form a filter which accepts the carrier
frequency signals and rejects the power system frequency. The following explanation of the
principle of the coupling device assumes a phase-to-ground coupling (PLC signals can be
coupled to one or more phases of the power system). The basic circuit diagram is shown below.

• A complete coupling comprises a line trap to prevent the PLC signals from being short-circuited
by the substation and a coupling filter formed by the coupling capacitor or capacitive voltage
transformer and the coupling device.

Frequently, the coupling device is referred to as a coupling filter. Its purpose is to permit the
PLC signal to pass, but reject the power system frequency and protect the communications
equipment from the power system voltage and transient over voltages caused by switching
operations and atmospheric discharges.

• Injection and extraction of PLC signals on HV lines (overhead and cables)
• Impedance matching between HV line and PLC equipment
• Electrical insulation between HV equipment and PLC equipment
• Through connection and distribution of PLC signals at intermediate stations

In addition to reliable protection of personnel and communication equipment, maximum emphasis

was also placed on low insertion loss for the coupling of the PLC signals on the transmission line.
The modular construction of the MCD80 coupling system also permits efficient solutions for
complex coupling applications.

4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
4.1 Coupling principles
In practice, PLC coupling is a complex problem since the units at both ends of the HV line have to
be optimised for the conditions prevailing there. In the case of long lines with high attenuation, an
analysis of the line is necessary to determine the arrangement with the most preferable
transmission characteristics. ABB has years of experience in conducting such analysis. Analysis is
generally not necessary for short or non-transposed lines.
For a horizontal conductor configuration, the centre phase is chosen for phase-to-ground coupling
and two adjacent phases for phase-to-phase coupling. In the case of configurations with a vertical
distribution, phases as high and as close as possible should be chosen. How many phases are
used is largely a question of the reliability requested for the PLC link.

4.1.1 Phase-to-ground coupling

This type of coupling is the simplest type of coupling of PLC signal to the HV line. Since a single
phase to ground fault close to the substation on the phase used for the PLC link can short-circuit
the signal, phase-to-ground coupling should only be used for power systems where transmission
reliability in the event of a power system fault is of secondary importance.

4.1.2 Phase-to-phase coupling

Coupling to two phases of the power system is much more reliable than coupling to just one phase.
A single phase to ground fault in this case will normally cause an additional attenuation of the PLC
signal by about 6 dB only. A phase-to-phase coupling scheme consists of two coupling devices,
one of which includes a hybrid module.
Sometimes the PLC signal can also be coupled to all three phases (three-phase coupling) or, in
case of double circuit HV lines, to one phase of circuit 1 and one phase of circuit 2 (intersystem
coupling). All of these types of coupling can be handled by modules of the MCD80 system. Details
will be given with project specific documentation.

4.1.3 HV line characteristic impedance

Characteristic impedances of HV lines lie typically in the range:
• 350 Ω … 450 Ω per phase, for single conductor and
• 250 Ω … 350 Ω per phase, for bundle conductors.
In order to terminate the coupling filter correctly for average operating conditions, the shunting
effect of the line trap and the station impedance has to be taken into account. The line traps, which
are inserted to compensate as far as possible the shunt impedance of the substation, are designed
such that the minimum blocking resistance is 1.41 times the HV line characteristic impedance.
Therefore the effective shunt impedance can be varied during operation between this value and
infinity.
Accordingly, the line-side impedance of the coupling device varies between:
• 240 Ω … 400 Ω, for single conductor and between
• 180 Ω … 300 Ω, for bundle conductors.
A compromise has to be chosen in these ranges for the terminal impedance of the coupling filter
and this is typically 320 Ω, for single conductor, and 240 Ω, for bundle conductors.
Generally the mismatch of a coupling filter designed for an impedance lower than the actual value
is smaller than the mismatch of a coupling filter designed for higher value.
A phase-to-phase coupling is mainly a combination (series connection) of two phase-to-ground
couplings and therefore the same terminal impedances for each unit apply for the filters.

The characteristic impedance for HV cables is much lower and has to be calculated in each
individual case.

4.2 Mechanical Design

4.2.1 General
Dimensional drawings 1KHW 002125 Coupling device
1KHW 002126 Separating filter A9CA
HENF 318450 Separating filter A9CG

The standard version of the MCD80 coupling device consists of the filter module with transformer,
a drain coil and a surge arrester mounted in an enclosure with an external earth switch, see
picture:

The components of the MCD80 coupling system are fitted in a weatherproof polyester case
reinforced with glass fibre mats and ventilated via water proof vents. This enclosure meets the
requirements of protection class IP54 according to IEC60529. The colour of the enclosure is grey
(RAL7032). There is no possibility of rust or corrosion. The door is fitted with a synthetic seal and
pressed firmly against the housing by two latches so that it is hermetically sealed. The latches are
opened and closed using a special key which can be removed to prevent unauthorised access to
the unit.

A stainless steel base plate is used for fixing the basic units and the subassemblies on welded
bolts. Two subassemblies can be additionally fitted in one coupling device case, but no more than
one hybrid transformer. All subassemblies are secured with captive screws.

The primary (for the connection to the CC/CVT) and earth (for the connection to system earth)
terminals are M10 bolts on the left of the unit. The connections to the PLC equipment enter via four
polyester cable glands (2x M20 and 2x M25) at the bottom of the housing. Connection of the
equipment cable is made via unmistakably numbered terminals, with the outer conductor
additionally taken to the equipment earth via a clamp. The connection with the lower designation
number of each pair of terminals is taken to the equipment earth.

ABB
Instruction Manual MCD80 HENF 90891

The coils and transformers impregnated under vacuum ensure that there is no impairment of
transmission characteristics even under unfavourable climatic conditions and therefore no
additional heating is required in this case.

In a phase-to-phase or intersystem scheme, one of the two coupling devices includes a hybrid
transformer.

4.2.2 Special versions

Special versions have been designed to meet special client’s requests like:

• A fully insulated version with earth switch inside the housing.

In this version only one additional module may be placed inside the housing.
• Interlocked earth switch version such that the door of the coupling device can only be opened
when the earth switch is closed.
• Version with internal UHF connectors.
• Version with lockable door.
• Version for Extra High Voltage (EHV) Systems with additional spurious protection inside the
housing as well as after the coaxial cable, in the communication room.
In this version only one additional module may be placed inside the enclosure.

4.2.3 Protection measures

A surge arrester limits transient voltage surges across the primary and earth terminals of the
coupling device caused by switching operations in the switchyard and atmospheric discharges.

The matching and galvanic isolating transformer is designed for a high power frequency and
transients withstand voltage providing an adequate safety margin for the insulation between the
primary (HV line-side) and secondary (PLC equipment-side) terminals.

The power frequency current through the CC/CVT caused by the system voltage is conducted to
earth via a drain coil. The used drain coil has high thermal and short-time current ratings.

The earth switch is rated for a high short-time current. This switch must be closed during
adjustments in the tuning device for safety reasons. Position of externally mounted earth switch is
clearly visible from distance.

Safety with respect to electrical hazards is further enhanced by the use of the insulating fibreglass
reinforced polyester enclosure.

4.3 Functional description of modules

4.3.1 General
The ABB modular coupling devices MCD80 are designed to provide optimum and economical
solutions for a wide variety of coupling applications.

The high pass coupling filters are the most versatile units which can be programmed on site for
different coupling capacitance values, line impedance and equipment impedance.

For special low bandwidth or line impedances, individually manufactured band pass coupling
devices are available.

Additional modules such as attenuators, impedance transformers and separating filters fit into the
family of MCD80.

The system comprises the following briefly described units and modules:

Edition C Language: EN Page: 4-10

ABB
Instruction Manual MCD80 HENF 90891

4.3.2 A9BS - High pass coupling device

Schematic diagram HENF 318257

The high pass filter is formed by the CC/TCT connected in series with the adjustable capacitor, the
adjustable drain coil and the shunt inductance. A transformer with taps is used for potential
separation between line-side and equipment-side and for proper impedance matching.

The circuit board is mounted in the standard enclosure which is equipped with earth switch and
surge arrester. The unit forms a complete PLC coupling system for phase-to-ground coupling in
conjunction with the associated CC/CVT. In the enclosure is sufficient space for mounting of two
optional modules.

This filter has to be programmed on site by means of strap settings for the capacitance value of
associated CC/CVT, line-side impedance and PLC equipment-side impedance according to the
setting table. For applications with lower line impedances or higher upper frequency limits special
programming tables are available on request.

4.3.3 A9BT - High pass coupling device

Schematic diagram HENF 318258

This unit consists of a high pass coupling device A9BS with a hybrid transformer module A1AC
mounted inside the enclosure.

Phase-to-phase or intersystem coupling requires push-pull signal injection into the HV lines. The
hybrid transformer is requested to create the push-pull signal for phase-to-phase or intersystem
coupling and for decoupling of the two phases.

For phase-to-phase high pass coupling a unit A9BS and A9BT are needed at each line end.

In the A9BT is space for mounting of one additional optional module.

4.3.4 A9BP - Band pass coupling device

Schematic diagram HENF 318553

The band pass filter is formed by the CC/CVT connected in series with a capacitor and inductance
and a L/C combination on the equipment-side. A transformer is used for potential separation
between line-side and equipment-side and for proper impedance matching. The series capacitor
prevents the power frequency currents from saturation of the ferrite core of transformer.

In special cases the equipment-side matching can be improved by resistors in series to CC/CVT.

The circuit board is mounted in the standard enclosure, which is equipped with earth switch, surge
arrester and drain coil. The unit forms a complete PLC coupling system for phase-to-ground
coupling in conjunction with the associated CC/CVT respectively. In the enclosure is sufficient
space for mounting of two optional modules.

This type of filter is individually manufactured for a fixed frequency band. No programming on site
is necessary. The band pass filter A9BP is used in frequency or line-side impedance ranges which
cannot be covered by the standard high pass filters. Examples of such applications are coupling to
cables or coupling to long overhead lines, when PLC channels have to be located to low
frequencies due to line attenuation reasons.

4.3.5 A9BR - Band pass coupling device

Schematic diagrams HENF 318554

This unit consists of a band pass coupling device A9BP with a hybrid transformer module A1AC
mounted inside the enclosure.

Phase-to-phase or intersystem coupling requires push-pull signal injection into the HV lines. The
hybrid transformer is requested to create a push-pull signal for phase-to-phase or intersystem
coupling and for decoupling of the two phases.

For phase-to-phase band pass coupling a unit A9BP and A9BR are needed at each line end.

In the A9BR is space for mounting of one additional optional module.

4.3.6 A1AC - Hybrid transformer module

Schematic diagram HENF 452973

The hybrid transformer module A1AC is one of the optional modules which can be mounted inside
of the MCD80 enclosure.

It is used for following applications:

• Generation of the push-pull signal and decoupling of the two phases in phase-to-phase or
intersystem couplings from up to six parallel 100 W units.
• For transit circuits with or without local insertion and extraction of PLC signals, up to three
parallel 100 W units at the maximum.
• Paralleling and decoupling of two PLC terminals with a frequency spacing less than the
recommended values (please refer to the PLC technical specifications).
• Paralleling and decoupling of PLC terminals without transmit filters.
• Decoupling of two PLC amplifiers connected in parallel for doubling the output power.

The standard version (Z2 = 75...125 Ω) is used for generation of push-pull signal and for transit
circuits. For paralleling of PLC terminals only, versions with specific equipment impedances shall
be used.

4.3.7 A1AD - Attenuator module

Schematic diagrams HENF 318363 π-attenuator
HENF 318364 X-attenuator
HENF 318362 series resistor

The attenuator module A1AD is one of the optional modules which can be mounted inside of the
MCD80 enclosure.

It is used for improvement of matching conditions between PLC terminal and HV line. The return
loss on equipment-side is thereby increased by twice the insertion loss of the attenuator used. The
improvement is valid for the whole frequency range.

Typical application for use of A1AD is improvement of return loss:

• For very short overhead lines (< 25 km)
• For lines with a strong variation of input impedance with frequency which may occur from
mismatch of overhead line and cable in a mixed system.
• Compromised termination for T-Lines

The standard attenuator module A1AD is of π-type design and available for 3dB and 5dB
attenuation at 75Ω nominal impedance.

The X-type design of attenuator module A1AD is the high power solution which is used if many
PLC terminals are connected in parallel. The 3dB version is used if more than 7 ETL640 or 4
ETL680 equipment are connected in parallel to the MCD80 and the 5dB version of X-type design of
attenuator module A1AD is only used if more than 5 ETL640 or 3 ETL680 equipment are
connected in parallel to the MCD80.

The series resistor version of attenuator module A1AD is used for T-lines, which have to be
broadband terminated at nominal impedance to prevent reflection from line end. An alternative
solution to prevent reflection from a T-line is the insertion of line traps in the T-line at the junction.

4.3.8 A1AE - Impedance transformer module

Schematic diagram HENF 458405

The impedance transformer module A1AE is one of the optional modules which can be mounted
inside of the MCD80 enclosure.
The high pass coupling device A9BS/A9BT is programmable for equipment-side impedance of 75Ω
or 125Ω unbalanced.
The module A1AE is used for matching to other equipment-side impedances such as 50Ω
unbalanced or 150Ω balanced and is individually manufactured.

4.3.9 A1AK - Auxiliary double band pass filter module

Schematic diagram HENF 318555
HENF 318556

The auxiliary double band pass filter module A1AK is one of the optional modules which can be
mounted inside of the MCD80 enclosure.

The band pass coupling filters A9BP and A9BR are transformed to double band pass filters by
means of A1AK modules. This type of coupling may have benefits when PLC channel frequencies
are very distinctive and CC/CVT with a smaller capacitance value may be used.

The auxiliary double band pass filter module A1AK is individually manufactured and delivered
together with associated band pass coupling devices A9BP/A9BR.

4.3.10 A9CA/A9CG - Separating filter

Schematic diagram HENF 462086
HENF 318424

The separating filter is used to directionally separate or combine PLC channels when low signal
attenuation in the pass band is of importance. Low-pass/high-pass version and band-pass/band-
stop version are available.

Separating filters are frequency selective circuits in contrast to hybrid transformers, which can be
used for separation and combination of PLC channels, too. Separating filters are used on the
equipment-side. The separating filters are individually designed and manufactured.

Separating filter A9CA is mounted inside of MCD80 enclosure.

Separating filter A9CG has same electrical characteristics as A9CA, but is mounted on a plate with
four UHF-sockets and intended for indoor use inside the PLC equipment cabinet.

7 INSTALLATION
7.1 Safety information

DANGER Follow safety instructions according to chapter 2.

The following points must be noted when working

on PLC coupling devices:
DANGER
• Work on CC/CVT and coupling device may
only be performed after the HV line has been
switched off, earthed and cleared by system
personnel!
• A HV line can carry dangerous voltages even
when switched off.
• The low voltage terminal of CC/CVT, which is
used to connect to the primary terminal of the
coupling device, may carry dangerous
voltages (HV line voltage level) even when HV
line is switched off.
• Never disconnect or cut the connection wire
or cable between the low voltage terminal of
CC/CVT and coupling device unless HV lines
are switched off and line terminal of CC/CVT
being earthed.
• Make sure that earth terminal of modular
coupling device MCD80 is connected with
station earth.
• Close earth switch of MCD80 before handling
any part of the electrical circuit of MCD80
equipment.

7.2 Installation procedure

First make sure that:
• HV lines connected to the CC/CVT used for coupling are de-energized
• Line terminal of CC/CVT is connected to the HV line
• Line terminal of CC/CVT is earthed by suitable ground connection, in line with the safety
regulations
• Check which phases shall be used for coupling of PLC signals and verify that CC/CVT has
been connected to the correct phases

The following procedure shall be followed for installation of coupling devices MCD80:
• Check rating plate of coupling device MCD80 intended to be installed. Make sure that type is
correct and frequency range of connected PLC signals are within the tuning frequencies of the
coupling device.
• Program strap settings according to programming table, if coupling devices type A9BS or A9BT
are being used.
The band pass coupling devices type A9BP and A9BR are manufactured project specific for a
fixed frequency range, impedance and capacitance value of CC/CVT and need not to be
programmed.

Edition C Language: EN Page: 7-30

ABB
Instruction Manual MCD80 HENF 90891

• Open the earth switch and check the drain coil continuity of the MCD80 device by means of a
DC resistance measurement. The DC resistance value measured between the primary and
earth terminals (corresponds to terminals of earth switch) shall be less than 1Ω for high pass
filters A9BS/A9BT and less than 10Ω for band pass filters A9BP/A9BR.
• Close the earth switch of the MCD80 device.
• Connect the MCD80 earth terminal to the station earth.
Use a copper conductor of at least 50mm2 cross section for the connection between the earth
terminal of the MCD80 box (lower bushing marked with earth symbol) and the station system
earth.
• Fix the MCD80 coupling device to the steel structure of the CC/CVT by means of the mounting
material enclosed in the packing.
• Consult the instruction manual of the CC/CVT manufacturer for its low voltage terminal (PLC).
Check whether CC/CVT is equipped with own safety circuit composed by drain coil, earth
switch and surge arrester. Please consider that:
ƒ The inherent self capacitance of metal-oxide surge arresters may deteriorate the filter
performance of the coupling device.
ƒ The low inductance drain coils may influence the filter performance of band pass filter device.
• Fix auxiliary earthing connection of at least 50mm2 copper cross-section to the low voltage
terminal of CC/CVT.
• Connect the low voltage terminal of CC/CVT with MCD80 primary terminal (upper bushing of
MCD80 box) by means of cable or solid conductor of at least 16mm2 cross-section (Isolation:
1000V, Test Voltage: 3.5kVrms, 1 min.).
Do not disconnect auxiliary earth. Do not use screened/shielded cables.
• Connect the HF-cables according to the schemes applicable for the requested application.
• Remove auxiliary earthing connection to the low voltage terminal of CC/CVT.

The potential difference between system earth of

different locations inside a substation may be
DANGER dangerous. Do not touch remotely earthed metallic
parts, such as cables, sheaths and armours.

There are various local regulations as well as company regulations for installation of PLC coupling
equipment which shall be applied.

Our recommendations for installation are as follows:

• The armouring and the sheath of the coaxial cable connecting the coupling device MCD80 with
the PLC equipment in the control room shall be connected to station earth at control room, only.
• The distance between MCD80 coupling device and PLC terminal of CC/CVT shall be as short
as possible.
A minimum spacing of 5 cm between conductor and earthed steel structure shall be maintained
for reduced stray capacitance.
No shielded wire shall be used for connection between CC/CVT and MCD80.
• In case CC/CVT has his own protective device (drain coil, surge arrester and earth switch) it
shall be verified by return loss and insertion loss measurements that these elements do not
deteriorate the performance of the PLC coupling devices.

8 COMMISSIONING
8.1 Safety information

DANGER Follow safety instructions according to chapter 2.

on PLC coupling devices:
DANGER

only be performed after the HV line has been
switched off, earthed and cleared by system

equipment.

8.2 General
8.2.1 Definitions
A complete PLC coupling system consists of the following components:

• The cabling between PLC equipment room and coupling device

• One or two coupling devices depending on type of coupling
• A hybrid transformer (for phase-to-phase or intersystem coupling, only)
• One or two HV coupling capacitors or capacitive voltage transformers depending on type of
coupling.
• One or two PLC line traps in the coupled HV phases depending on type of coupling.

ABB
Instruction Manual MCD80 HENF 90891

Recommended tests during commissioning

For verification of the performance of the PLC coupling system in a HV substation following tests
are recommended to be carried out within used frequency range:

• Return loss measurement

• Composite loss (coupling attenuation) measurement

Return loss:
The degree of matching between two units is indicated by the return loss value which is defined for
a four terminal network according to the following formula:

R0

Z = R+jX Z1
U0

primary side secondary side

Fig. 27

Ar ≡ return loss value in dB

R ≡ real part of measured input impedance Z of four
( R + R 0 )2 + X 2 terminal network
A r = 20 ⋅ log [dB] R0 ≡ nominal value of input impedance of four
( R − R 0 )2 + X 2 terminal network
X ≡ imaginary part of measured input impedance Z
of four terminal network

The formula gives the return loss for the primary side of the four terminal network. Please consider
that this value may be influenced by the degree of matching on the secondary side of the four
terminal network i.e. the value of Z1.

For matching between secondary terminal of coupling device and HV line, IEC 60481 specifies a
return loss value of not less than 12 dB.

Composite loss:
The composite loss value is the second important characteristic of a PLC coupling system. The
total composite loss of a PLC coupling is composed by the attenuation of the cable from equipment
room to coupling device, the attenuation of the coupling filter and the tapping loss of the line trap.

Often composite loss is called coupling attenuation or insertion loss, too.

This composite loss test additionally indicates for phase-to-phase couplings whether the push-pull
condition is maintained.

Hint for simplifications of composite loss calculation during measurement:

The voltage level U1 measured in dBu can directly be read as composite loss in dB, if the source
voltage U0 is adjusted to following level:
⎛ Zq ⎞
U 0= 20 ⋅ log ⎜ 2 ⋅ ⎟ (in dBu)
⎜ Z ⎟
⎝ 1 ⎠

8.2.2 Recommended information on test reports

All documents of tests carried out during commissioning or maintenance are called test reports. In
order to make interpretation of test results clear we strongly recommend making a complete record
of the test conditions, of the tested equipment and of measuring instruments used.

Recommended information on test reports:

• Data of coupling devices as type and make, frequency range, nominal impedances,
programming (strap settings), serial number.
• Data of CC/CVT, as type and make, capacitance value, system voltage.
• Data of line traps on the connected HV lines as type and make, inductance, blocking frequency
range, blocking impedance or resistance, current ratings, type of lightning arrester and serial
numbers.
• Data of HV line: system voltage, phases coupled, feeder name and direction, conductor type
(bundle or single conductor), length of line to next substation.
• Switching status of substation, i.e. position of earth switch close to line traps.
• Type designation of measuring equipment, diagram of test circuit with clear information about
source impedances and impedances of termination and units of signal levels (dB, dBu, dBm,
dBV).

8.3 Testing with dummy load

Prior to measurements with the HV equipment connected it is advisable to test the coupling
equipment with so called “dummy load” first. For dummy load tests, CC/CVT capacitance Ck is
replaced by a low voltage capacitor CD of equal capacitance value and HV line is replaced by a
resistor equal to characteristic impedance of HV line.

Hint for simplifications of return loss calculation during measurement:

If level U1 is set to 0 dBu (0.775V) with switch S in open position, level U1 with switch S in closed
position corresponds directly to the return loss A in dB.

Test procedure:
1. Close earth switches on coupling-devices.
2. Fix auxiliary earthing connections of at least 50mm2 copper cross-section to low voltage
terminals of CC/CVT.
3. Remove connections between primary terminal of coupling devices (upper terminal of the
earthing blade) and low voltage terminals of CC/CVT.
4. Connect dummy load comprising of equivalent capacitors CD in series with equivalent line
impedances Z1 to primary terminals of coupling device (upper terminal of earthing blade)
according to Fig. 31 or 32 respectively. Use values of CD and Z1 according to rating plate of
coupling devices used.
5. Open blades of earth switches on coupling-devices.
6. Connect test equipment with differential transformer to the coupling system according to Fig. 31
or 32 respectively.
7. Set voltage level U0 of frequency generator to the above given value with switch S in open
position. Sweep frequency of generator in a sufficient number of steps through the tuning band
and record measured voltages in test report. Repeat procedure with switch S in closed position.
8. Close earth switches on coupling-filters.
9. Re-establish connections between primary terminals of coupling devices (upper terminal of the
earthing blade) and low voltage terminals of CC/CVT.
10.Disconnect auxiliary earthing connections at low voltage terminals of CC/CVT.

Hints:

If the measured values are not within the expectations we recommend to:

1. repeat return loss and insertion loss measurement on cable and coupling device separately.
2. test the single units of phase-to-phase coupling devices separately.

8.4 Testing with connected HV transmission line

8.4.1 Return loss measurement
Make sure that connection cable used between PLC coupling devices and PLC equipments at
opposite substation is terminated with its nominal impedance Z2 to avoid reflections. This is very
important for lines shorter than 100km.

Test procedure:
1. Install coupling devices according to installation procedure clause 6.
2. Connect test equipment with differential transformer to the coupling system according to Fig. 31
or 32 respectively.
3. Open earth switch(es) on coupling device(s).
4. Set voltage level U0 of frequency generator to the above given value with switch S in open
position. Sweep frequency of generator in a sufficient number of steps through the tuning band
and record measured voltages in test report. Use selective voltmeter to avoid interference from
external signal sources. Repeat procedure with switch S in closed position.

5. Close earth switches on coupling devices.

We recommend repeating this test with substation earthed behind line trap. Same test shall be
carried out at the opposite substation.

8.4.2 Line attenuation measurement

If results of return loss measurement are deemed to be satisfactory composite loss of the complete
transmission path may be measured. This test can be carried out with transmission line energized
or earthed. Test can be made either from PLC equipment in one substation to the PLC equipment
in the other substation or from one coupling device to the other see Fig. 33.

In order to avoid interference from other signals on the line, measurement shall be performed
frequency selective with appropriate test equipment. Test personnel need to be present in both
substations during these tests.

9 OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

9.1 Operation
No instructions for operation of equipment are necessary.

9.2 General procedure for maintenance

The coupling devices type MCD80 do not contain any parts subject to wear and they are therefore
considered to be maintenance-free in this respect.

However, it is recommended to check that all bolts are securely fastened with correct torque
moment. This check shall be carried out during normal circuit maintenance intervals.

Recommended torque moments for screw connections from stainless steel A2:
