Types of Music That Increase Productivity at Work

Music has always been one of important part of our life. "Music is my life", that's what many
people say. Through music, we can feel a lot of kind of feelings. Through music, we can
connect ourselves to the song that we listen to. Most importantly, music always helps to make
us feel better. By listening music, we can also boost our spirits. With the right types of song in
the right time, we can stimulate ourselves to be more productive.

These are types of music that we can listen to when we struggle at work.

1. A song with element of nature sound


Jonas Braasch, a researcher from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York, USA
found that element of nature sound such as sound of water flow, or sound of rain pouring
can fix mood and increase our focus. This type of sound can also distract ourselves from
anything around that can disrupt us.

2. A song that you think is not special


All of us have our own favorite songs, and we also must have ever been listened to it
when we're at work. Did it help? We can't deny that listening to our favorite songs is really
good, but actually it can also make us lose our focus. When we listen to our favorite song,
we will sing along to it as well. It makes us more focus to sing the song than do our work.
According to a study by Fu Jen University, listening to a song that we think is special can
decrease our concentrate at work. Choose and listen to a song that's ordinary.

3. A song without lyrics


Even a simple thing such as lyrics of a song can be a distraction. According to a study by
Cambridge, sound of someone talking whether it is from a conversation or from a song
can distract the workers concentrate.

4. A song with certain tempo


A research by Centerville High School, Ohio shows that there's a relation between music
and the heartbeat of someone that listens to it. This research used 30 adults as the
subject. They were chosen randomly, and being asked to listen to different types of song.
15 of them listened to an upbeat song, the rest of them listened to a downbeat song. The
result showed that 93% of the subjects had a heartbeat decreasing after listening to
downbeat song, and 100% of the subjects had a heartbeat increasing after listening to
upbeat song. It means that songs that we listen to influence our heartbeat, which means
influence our mood and our mental health as well.

A study by BMS College of Engineering, found that a slow tempo song with 60 beats per
minute can decrease stress and give relaxation to people who listen to it.

5. A song that is played in medium volume


The researchers from University of Illinois, British Columbia, Virginia found that it is good
listening to a song in medium volume. Apparently, listening to a song in medium volume
can push us to think clearly and to inovate more, while listening to a song in high volume
can decrease our brain's function to process information.

As we can see music is not only useful to entertain us, but it can also be used as a media to
increase our productivity. With the right types of music, we can boost our spirits in doing
something.
