The 1st Science Film Festival Indonesia 2010

Starting with the Official Opening Ceremony at the blitzmegaplex Grand Indonesia on November
15, 2010 a new film festival format, which combines fun and education, will arrive in Indonesia.
The 1st Science Film Festival in the nation of islands is an officially associated partner event of
the United Nations and its International Year of Biodiversity 2010. From the 16th - 30th of November
the festival will be hosted in blitzmegaplex Pacific Place, Universitas Paramadina, PPIPTEK-TMII
and the Goethe-Institut Jakarta.

Originally the festival was founded in Bangkok, Thailand in 2005. Since then it has grown
significantly with more than 110,000 visitors last year. This year for the first time it will take place
simultaneously in Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, making it the biggest
and best attended event of its kind in terms of audience figures in the world. Hereby the event
aims to show children that science can actually be fun and that life is all about asking questions.

Also the festival wishes to facilitate regional exchange and link countries in the ASEAN region
according to the principle of increasing access to knowledge structures. Last but not least it
intends to demonstrate the valuable position of science literacy, to counteract against a trend
that became noticeable: A stagnating or even decreasing interest of the young generation in
science related studies and professions.

Presenting these issues in an entertaining way the Science Film Festival is triggering interesting
questions to the young audience: What is a black hole, to what extent do genes have an influence
on who we are, why is the rainforest so important and just how will we manage to survive long
space voyages in the future? Chosen by a local jury, 28 different films from Australia, Austria,
France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Poland, Thailand, the Netherlands, the Philippines and the
United Kingdom will be screened within these two weeks. All films are dubbed into Indonesian
language to provide complete accessibility for young audiences.

Children attending the screenings will not only watch films. With lively experiments and fun
quizzes matching the content of the films they will immediately become a part of the world of
science and will be encouraged to think about what they have just seen. The main target group
is youngsters between 9 and 16, yet the range of films is big and other age-groups will enjoy the
films too. In cooperation with the Ministry of Education the festival approaches schools in the
wider Jakarta area to send classes to the venues.
Founded and set up by the Goethe-Institut Indonesia the festival is implemented in cooperation
with strong partners such as the Universitas Paramadina, UNESCO in cooperation with the
Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO, the German and the French Embassy in Indonesia,
Bayer Indonesia, the German-Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EKONID) and
blitzmegaplex. It is officially endorsed by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Research
and Technology and generously supported by SIEMENS, Surya Institute as well as Universitas
Multimedia Nusantara. Strong Media-Partners such as Kuark Magazine, the Jakarta Post, Vivanews,
Metro-TV and BChannel will help to communicate the event to a broader public. Patron to the
1st Science Film Festival is Prof. Yohanes Surya.

We warmly invite you to visit the 1st Science Film Festival being held from November 16 – 30.
