President’s Corner
Dear Members,
Club Officers I hope that you all are enjoying the Summer now that the weather seems more appropriate.
I’m really enjoying my grandson, especially with his big smile.
Mike Caravakis
I am also very happy to report that my wife Marlene has decided to retire to spend more quality time with the family. I
President
must say she leaves behind a great teaching career in which she touched the lives of so many youths with her great
Ghassan Najm positive teaching skills and personality and demonstrating a real care for such a tough profession of teaching.
Vice President Our Scholarship Dinner event brought out the best in our young adults again. We are so proud of all 4 recipients and
Jimmy Glynn their wonderful families and friends. Of course, this event could not have happened without a great committee.
Secretary Our June 30th Lebanon Day Event was spectacular and a great tribute to the servicemen who served in Lebanon
during the crisis of the 80’s. As we gave out the certificates to each member, I could see the gratitude in their faces for
Lou Najamy
being recognized and appreciated.
Asst. Secretary
I want to thank everyone on the Golf Committee for an outstanding job on this year’s event. We had so much fun on a
William Asmar perfect day.
Treasurer
I also want to say that I feel so lucky to have a board and elected members who truly do such a great job for Our Club.
Mark Chory
If you have any questions on anything, please try to attend our next meeting or I can be reached at

Newsletter Staff Corner:
It’s official “SUMMER IS HERE”. With that many of our members are taking vacations and some are traveling to Lebanon and
other faraway places, so how about sharing some of your trips with fellow members? Just a short blurb or a long narrative or
whatever you feel comfortable writing and sending it to LAC Newsletter at one of the following addresses:
lebanonclub@att.net or “snail mail” to LAC, 22 West Street, Danbury, CT 06810 attention: News Staff Corner.
A short comment on Lebanon Day 2019 – What a wonderful tribute to our club for honoring the U.S. Beirut Veterans who
served with the International Peace Keeping Force in Lebanon during the early 1980’s. The rains stopped and the sky opened
up with blue skies and bright sun. Special congratulations to co-chairs Tom Saadi and Joe Walkovich for a wonderful event. I
am keeping this section short so that all recent club functions can be covered as well as pictures from these events.
Thoughts to Live By:
“The amount of satisfaction you get from life depends largely on your own ingenuity, self-sufficiency, and resourcefulness.
People who wait around for life to supply their satisfaction usually find boredom instead.” William C. Menninger, American
scientist, physician, engineer. (1899-1966)
“When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this – you haven’t. Thomas Edison, American Inventor (1847-1931).
A Little Humor:
“Reasoning with a child is fine, if you can reach the child’s reason without destroying your own.” John Mason Brown,
American essayist (1900-1969).
“Ninety-eight percent of all statistics are made up.” Author unknown.
Events News:

Mayor Donald Boughton for future awards.
Golf Outing – Thanks to the 80 participating players who joined us on June 12, and to many of the sponsors including Colonial
Ford of Danbury for Hole in one Truck, Savings Bank of Danbury and Garavel Auto of Norwalk, it was a very successful
event. Thanks also to several businesses for donating for many of the Raffle prizes. For the first time, coffee mugs were also
given out to the players as souvenirs, with photos of the players and the club logo printed on them.
Annual Lebanon American Day – Flag Raising Ceremony and Recognizing US Beirut Vets of 1980’s:

The 15th Annual Lebanon American Day took place on Sunday June 30, 2019 beginning with a Flag raising ceremony at
Danbury City Hall at 155 Deer Hill Avenue. Lebanon American Club officers and members were joined by the
Lebanese Consul General, Majdi Ramadan, Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton and Commissioner of Veterans Affairs,
Thomas Saadi to acknowledge the contributions of the Lebanese-American community and to recognize U.S. Service
members who served in Lebanon in the 1980s.
The Veterans being honored were presented with certificates of special recognition from the CT Department of Veterans
Affairs, City of Danbury and the Lebanon American Club. Consul General Ramadan made a special presentation on
behalf of the Lebanese government to the Beirut Veterans of America Organization. Following the ceremony more than
70 people, included many of the Beirut Veterans, enjoyed a traditional Lebanese Luncheon at the Lebanon American
Club catered by John Hannah.

"We were proud to host this ceremony, the first of its kind in the U.S., in which a Lebanese American Organization
formally honored the service of American military personnel in Lebanon in conjunction with the Government of
Lebanon." Said Lebanon American Day Co-Chair Joseph Walkovich. "It was an honor to recognize these men,
who served in Lebanon in support of the multinational peacekeeping mission and remember their comrades who made the
supreme sacrifice in that noble mission." Said Commissioner Saadi,

Lebanon American Day Co-Chairs Joe Walkovich and Tom Saadi express their thanks to all involved and they have
received very positive feedback from the Veterans and members of the Community.

Ladies Auxiliary News by President Betty Najm
We hope you are enjoying your summer! Stay cool and be safe! Our next meeting will be Tuesday, Sept.10 at 7 PM.
Our Program Chairperson, Mary Elizabeth Salame, is organizing a “Taste of Lebanon” Wine, Beer and Spirits in
Sept. at the Maron Hotel’s private room from 7 to 9 pm. The date needs to be changed to Friday, Sept. 13, since
there is a conflict. The cost will be $30 per person for delicious hot and cold appetizers and a sampling of Lebanese
spirits! This new fundraiser will allow the club to raise more funds to help with some of our new charity events, like
the St. Jude Run/Walk and other community programs.
On June 30, the club honored our Beirut Veterans who served in Lebanon in the 1980’s.
Victoria Beylouni, the Vice President, spoke at the luncheon on behalf of the Ladies’ Auxiliary and she welcomed
everyone that attended. She addressed them by saying,
“For those of you that served our nation, whether in war or peace, I want to acknowledge our gratefulness and
appreciation for your service! My son is also a 20 year veteran who served in the Air Force on overseas missions,
so as a mother I understand the sacrifice on both sons and mothers who pray and wait for their sons to return home.
I lived in Beirut during the time our Marine Barrack was bombed, and I remember the devastation and chaos that it
created. My heart was grieved as I knew many of our young men lost their lives. Due to this, I returned to the USA,
and my son who I tried to keep from knowing war and its effects, chose to join the US Airforce. He served for 20
years on many dangerous missions.
The one thing, I do know, is that veterans are not always appreciated for what they do, so we can have peace. Many
times people take for granted your duty and service to this great country. Serving overseas can be daunting, but
especially in Lebanon where tensions are high and the political landscape unpredictable. Hats off to you, God Bless
you and God Bless America!”
I want to personally acknowledge and thank Peter Delucia, who served in Beirut and all the Veterans that attended
this wonderful event!
I hope to see many of you at St. Anthony’s Mahrajan on Fri., Aug. 16 and Sat. Aug. 17 and St. Ann’s Lobster
and Steak Dinner on Aug. 24.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
1. Special prayers and a speedy recovery to our ill members.
2. Please remember to support our advertising sponsors.
3. Special Friday night dinners. Ladies are welcome to attend.
4. If you have a special church or community event coming up, please let us know in time to publish it for you.
