A Fablab is a workshop for the community, offering modern computer-controlled equipment to

allow making almost anything. Warrington Fablab is hosted by a secondary school, to promote
digital innovation and invention among local businesses and youngsters.

I joined the Fablab team from the start, as part time technician (while studying at University). The
directors were looking for young assistants who were enthusiastic with digital technologies, could
inspire children, and delivered professional services to businesses.

My job there entitles helping visitors using the facilities and equipment for their projects, and to
offer them tailored solutions. I also supervise that the equipment is used in compliance with health
and safety regulations.

Secondly, I promote digital technology in the community, by creating and delivering an ample
number of 3D computer design and 3D printing courses for both adults and children outside the
school (e.g. summer school workshops); but I also run regular enrichment digital activities for kids
attending the Beamont Collegiate Academy High School.

The Fablab team works very closely in every project, but I have eventually specialized in 3D
computer design and 3D printing, one of the core services offered. This is a newly evolving
technology that requires constant experimentation and improvising.

Some of the most interesting projects I have worked involved creating 3D printed replicas of
Egyptian archaeological pieces for museum exhibitions (directed by Oxford University), adapting 3D
printed prosthetic hands for children, or printing in 3D an innovative prototype for patient
intubation, to be presented at international medical meetings.

At the Fablab we all work together very strongly as a team, but I have eventually specialized in 3D
computer design and 3D printing, one of the core services offered. This technology is so new and
evolving that we had to create and improvise constantly, as there are still no set guidelines on 3D
printing solutions.
