Activity No. 4.1
I. Identify your own objectives based on the activity.
Postulate questions out of the given objectives. (at
least 3 questions)
II. Materials: pig’s heart, dissecting pan, scalpel,
scissors, dissecting set (per group)
III. Directions:
A. Place the pig’s heart on your hand.
1. Guess the weight of the heart.
2. Describe the texture of the heart.
3. Give the general size and shape of the heart.
4. Locate the following parts and give one function for each.
____a. Aorta
____b. Pulmonary Aorta
____c. Pulmonary Vein
____d. Coronary arteries and veins
____e. Superior Vena Cava
B. Next, place the frog’s heart in your hand. Answer the above
questions using the frog’s heart as the model. Make a list of
differences between the two hearts for comparison (the outer
structure & appearance).
C. You are now ready to cut open your pig’s heart. Turn the
heart sideways. Make a small cut down the middle starting
from the top part near the aorta down to the bottom tip with
your scalpel. You have just cut through some muscle. Next,
take your scissors and continue to cut through the incision you
made until the heart opens into two halves (longitudinal
section).
