COMPOUND WORDS

Compound words are formed when two (2) words or more

are joined together to create a new word that has an
entirely new meaning.

Down + stairs = down stairs

Down- from a higher to a lower place or position.

Stairs- a series of steps that go from one level or floor
Downstairs- on or to lower floor of a building.

Examples:

APPLE TREE BATHROOM

BIRD-OF-PREY BUS STOP
CAT FISH COURTHOUSE
HOUSEKEEPER SUNFLOWER

There are three (3) types of compound words.

1. Closed compounds – sunflower, keyboard, notebook,

bookstore- mesh two words together.
2. Hyphenated compounds – mother-in-law, merry-go-round
–not surprisingly use a hyphen between two or more
words, often to prevent ambiguity.
3. Open compounds- school bus, living room, -are
commonly used together but are written with a space in
between.

Note: some words (someone, something, somewhere,

anyone, and anything) should always be one word,

List down 10 examples each of closed compound, open

compound and hyphenated compound words.
