Is essential to understanding how humans learn, mature, and adapt.
Stages:
1. Pre-natal ( conception-birth)
2. Infancy (birth – 2 yrs.)
3. Early Childhood (2-6 yrs.)
4. Late Childhood (6-12 yrs.)
5. Adolescence (puberty-18 yrs.)
6. Early Adulthood (18-40 yrs.)
7. Middle Age (40- retirement)
8. Old Age ( retirement- death)
ROBERT J. HAVIGHURST – was a chemist and physicist, educator, and expert on human
development and aging.
Born on June 1900 in De Pere, Wisconsin
He wrote several books and published many papers
His best known book called “Human Development and Education”
From 1948 to 1953 he developed his highly influential theory of humans development and
education
He identified 6 Major stages in human life covering birth to old age.
1. Infancy and Early Childhood (birth – 6 yrs. Old)
2. Middle Childhood (6– 13 yrs. Old))
3. Adolescence (13-18 yrs. Old)
4. Early Adulthood (19-30 yrs. old)
5. Middle Adulthood (30-60 yrs. Old)
6. Later Maturity (61-above)
1. Learning to walk,
2. Learning to talk,
3. Learning to take solid foods
4. Readiness for reading
1. Selecting a mate
2. Starting a family
3. Rearing children
4. Starting an occupation
