The electromagnetic unit:

is contained in the transformer base box and includes the following items (refer to appendix
diagrams :
TV = Inductive voltage transformer:

reduces the capacitor divider output voltage to the supply voltage required for metering and
protective instruments, etc.

The magnetic transformer operates at low induction and has auxiliary coils to supply the
ferroresonance damping filter and to allow ratio correction.

L = Variable inductance reactor:

to offset the leading capacitive reactance of the capacitor voltage divider.

F = Antiferroresonance filter:
damps any possible subharmonic, ferroresonance oscillation.

S = Surge arrester:
protects the medium voltage circuit from any kind of overvoltage.

CH = Chocke coil (if foreseen):

to shortcircuit electromagnetic unit supplied voltage.

The electromagnetic unit is sealed and the oil volume variations, caused from temperature
variations, are compensated by a nitrogen cushion.

In the transformer tank is placed a hermetically sealed aluminum box for cover and protect
the following components:

secondary terminal board made in epoxy resin; provided terminals are M5 threaded.

CA = carrier (if foreseen):

it is made up of:

an usually 10 mH coil series-connected to capacitor to allow high frequency signal

transmission;

a surge arrester, parallel-connected to 10 mH coil;

a disconnecting switch parallel- connected to coil, used to short circuit carrier device and
avoid voltage contact for operator when secondary box will opened.

In the bottom of the box there is a plate which can be drilled to accommodate a cable gland.

The capacitive unit:

It consists in series-connected capacitive elements and made with PPR or PPR- Paper; it is
contained in a porcelain or in a composite insulator and it is insulated with synthetic fluid.
Capacitor is hermetically sealed; oil volume
variations caused from temperature variations are compensated by a suitable stainless steel
bellows.

4. SHIPMENT

TCVT are shipped from our factory only when they have passed all required tests and visual
inspections.

Transformers are shipped oil-filled and they must be always kept in vertical position
or tilted by more than 25° from the vertical even less horizontally shipment is not
specifically required (option).

The transformers are packaged taking into account the dimensions and masses listed in
customers’ technical documents given by TRENCH Shenyang.

Up to the 245 kV rating, the transformers are shipped as one piece units whereas those of 300
to 525 kV classes are divided in two assemblies: upper capacitive unit and lower capacitive unit
with magnetic unit.

5. ACCEPTANCE AND UNLOADING

On arrival and before accept it, to ascertain any damage which may have occurred
during transport, customer shall carefully inspect the transformer.

Particular attention should be given to the following parts (see fig.5):

• insulator (1);
• magnetic unit oil level gauge (2);

• secondary terminal box (3): it project out from the base tank and therefore is liable to be
bumped into;

•carrier and chocke coil disconnecting switch handles, if provided (4);

• electromagnetic unit oil drain plug (5)

• tightness of the gaskets between insulators and metal flanges, as well as between transformer
base box and secondary multi-lead bushing (6).

Before shipment, the transformer is carefully cleaned so that any stain of oil detected on arrival
is a sign of a possible leakage.

If damage is ascertained, all parts as well as the packing shall be kept and a
claim shall be submitted to the forwarding agent. At the same time inform TRENCH
SHENYANG

To unload from the transportation means and to handle a transformer packaged in a case,
always sling the case using the holdfasts provided on the upper part of the case.

6. MOVING TCVT WHEN SHIPPED IN HORIZONAL POSITION (OPTION)

After package has been removed, raise transformer to the vertical position: use provided
eyebolts placed on TCVT top cap.
During this operation, transformer base must be blocked (See fig. 6).

Attention: TCVT can be installed only 12 hours after erection in vertical position.

Attention:

10. INSTALLATION

Before erection, the transformer shall be visually inspected carefully again as specified
under section 4.

If windings continuity needs to be checked, apply to TCVT at least 2 % of nominal voltage to

have an appreciable voltage measure.

To erect the transformer, proceed as follows:

• check the conformity of the transformer drilling on its base and which that is on the
support;

• sling the voltage transformer using lifting holes provided on its base proceeding as
specified in chapter 5;

• place the voltage transformer on the supporting structure and fix it using bolts M16;

• in the event of transformers that have been shipped divided into two parts, it shall be
assembled by bolting the junction flanges (with a torque of 1.5 kgm).

When the two parts are assembled, observe the serial numbers shown on the
individual parts. Before connecting the upper section to the lower one it is necessary to
remove the protection cap on the top of lower transformer part, paying attention not to
damage the bellows (oil volume variation compensator).

• make the connection to the earth terminal, provided on the base, using a copper stranded
rope having an indicative diameter of 10 to 15 mm;

• remove and drill the plate provided at the bottom of the secondary terminal box for fixing the
cable gland, place in its original position and mount the gland;

• make the connections of the metering and protection circuits to the secondary terminal
block (fig.9), according to the wiring diagram provided on the cover of the secondary terminal
box.
Use leads having a section proportionate to the current rating, the accuracy class and the length
of the circuit. As a guide, we inform that the secondary metering winding of our voltage
transformer is made with a conductor having a cross section area of 15 to 20 mm²;

• connect to earth one terminal of each separate secondary winding using the suitable
earth terminal provided in the secondary terminal box (fig.9).
This is made to avoid that the secondary winding takes a dangerous electrostatic potential.

In the event of delta connected secondary windings, earth the secondary terminal of one
of the three transformers only.

If the last warning will not be respected, the windings will be in short circuit and
they will be damaged.

11. GENERAL MAINTENANCE

As a rule, the sealed transformers TCVT series do not need any maintenance, except for
external cleaning, depending on the ambient conditions and according to the practice used for
other S/S equipment (circuit breakers, disconnecting switches, etc.).

Normally, a simple visual inspection of the outside of the transformer is sufficient to

ascertain its condition.

During inspections observe the oil level gauge of the magnetic unit and the oil shall stay at
middle gauge level. In some exceptional events, for example when the transformer has been
out of service for some time at a very low temperature, the level may be lower than the minimum
zone, although the condition of the voltage transformer remaining perfectly normal. During
service the surface of the insulator sheds gets always covered with deposits (dust, soot, salts,
etc.) which may appreciably decrease the external dielectric withstand of the equipment.

Cleaning for the above surfaces does not require any particular system or servicing tool. Use
what normally foreseen for similar apparatus

Ordinarily, it is not needed to check oil conditions as pollution is avoided by the sealed
construction.

The capacitive unit of the voltage transformer shall never and for no reason to open.

If an oil sample is to be taken from the magnetic unit of the transformer, proceed as specified in
paragraph 9.

12. HOW TO HANDLE ANOMALYES

12.1 Oil leakage

A shortcoming that might develop with time and impair the operation of voltage transformer is oil
leakage. It is indicated by evident external signs and by a depression of the oil level in
electromagnetic unit.

In the event of leakage, after locating the damage, act with the promptness suggested by the
extent of the leakage.

12.2 Oil leakage from insulator end

These kinds of oil leakage denote a deterioration of the gasket placed between metal parts
and insulator: in this event it must be replaced in our factory.

12.3 Leakage from oil level gauge of electromagnetic unit

Tighten the same level with a key 55 mm. If this is not sufficient it is necessary to replace
gaskets; contact TRENCH Shenyang.

12.4 Insulator breakage

If the breakage has caused oil leakage from the capacitor, send back the transformer to
TRENCH Shenyang.

13. OIL SAMPLING FROM ELECTROMAGNETIC UNIT

As a rule, there is no need to check insulating oil conditions and its dielectric strength: the
transformer is a hermetically sealed construction, which maintains the quality of the oil
unchanged for a long time.

If however a small sample of oil (no more than 0,5 liter in the whole transformer life)
is to be drained,
TRENCH ITALIA advise to take it from suitable point on electromagnetic unit cover
(fig.12) in a protected environment, proceeding as follows:

• get a drain kit with syringe, probe and test tube made with mineral oil resistant material;

• clean carefully the plug using trichloroethylene;

• remove plug and copper gasket;

• introduce in the hole the probe applied to the syringe and make the drain; make sure that the
sample will remain in a sealed test tube;

• apply new copper gasket and re- assemble the plug.

14. TRANSFORMER DISASSEMBLING

Complete transformer disassembling entails the drainage of the insulating oil and the exposure
of the active internal parts of the transformer to atmosphere. Consequently the transformer
cannot be reassembled without a preventive thermal treatment under high vacuum and an
insulation test of the high voltage winding.

All these operations must be performed by the experienced personnel at our factory.
