PROCEDURE

1. Determine the occupancy category of the building or other structures. (See NSCP 2015, Table
103-1)
2. Determine the basic wind speed, V, for the applicable risk category. (See NSCP 2015, Figure
2071.5-1A,B or C)
3. Determine wind load parameters:
 Wind directionality factor, 𝐾𝑑 , (See Section 207A.6 and Table 207A.6-1)
 Exposure Category B, C or D, (See Section 207A.7)
 Topographic factor, 𝐾𝑧𝑡 , (See Section 207A.8 and Figure 207A.8-1)
𝑲𝒛𝒕 = (𝟏 + (𝑲𝟏 )(𝑲𝟐 )(𝑲𝟑 ))𝟐

Where:

𝑲𝟏 , 𝑲𝟐 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑲𝟑 are given in the Figure 207A.8-1

Note:

If the site conditions and locations of structures do not meet all the conditions specified in
Section 207A.8.1 then 𝑲𝒛𝒕 = 1.0

 Enclosure classification, (See Section 207A.10)

 Internal pressure coefficient, (𝐺𝐶𝑝𝑖 ), (See Section 207A.11 and Table 207A.11-1)

4. Determine the velocity pressure exposure coefficient, 𝐾𝑧 or 𝐾ℎ , (See Section 207C.4.4, Table
207C.3-1)

5. Determine the velocity pressure, 𝑞𝑧 or 𝑞ℎ , (See Section 207C.3.2 Equation 207C.3-1)

Velocity pressure𝒒𝒛 , evaluated at height z shall be calculated by the following equation:
𝑁
𝑞𝑧 = 0.613 𝐾𝑧 𝐾𝑧𝑡 𝐾𝑑 𝑉 2 ( ) ; 𝑉 𝑖𝑛 𝑚/𝑠 (𝟐𝟎𝟕𝑪. 𝟑 − 𝟏)
𝑚2
Where:

𝐾𝑑 = wind directionality factor, see Section 207A.6

𝐾𝑧 = velocity pressure exposure coefficient, see Section 207C.3.1

𝐾𝑧𝑡 = topographic factor defined, see Section 207A.8.2

𝑉 = basic wind speed, See Section 207A.5.1

𝑞𝑧 = velocity pressure calculated using Equation 207C.3.1 at mean roof height

𝒉.

6. Determine external pressure coefficient, (𝐺𝐶𝑝 ), using Figure 207C.4-1 for flat and gable roofs.
7. Calculate wind pressure, 𝑝, from the Equation 207C.4-1.

𝑝 = 𝑞ℎ [(𝐺𝐶𝑝𝑓 ) − (𝐺𝐶𝑝𝑖 )] (𝑁/𝑚2 )

Where:

𝑞ℎ = velocity pressure evaluated at mean aroof height h as defined in Section

207A.3

(𝐺𝐶𝑝𝑓 ) = external pressure coefficient from Figure 207C.4-1

(𝐺𝐶𝑝𝑖 ) = internal pressure coefficient from Table 207A.11-1

8. Calculate the design wind load 𝐹.

𝐹 = [𝑝(𝐴)]

Where:
𝑝 = wind pressure
𝐴 = projected area normal to the wind

9. Draw the detailed frame analysis of the wind load.
