ABSTRACT

EMERSON, CHICA A.,INDEMNE, RHODMAR, SARMIENTO, KAYLE ROSAINNE

M., SERRANO, JONESA A. Error Analysis in Solving Word Problems in Linear
Algebra of Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics Second Year
Students in Cavite State University – Main Campus. Masters of Education Major in
Mathematics. Cavite State University. Indang Cavite. May 2019, Adviser: Dr. Editha
Reyes

The study was conducted to determine the demographic profile of 2 nd year

students in terms of age, gender, school graduated in public or private, educational
attainment of their parents; identify the common error of the students in solving Linear
Algebra; determine which common error mostly students prone to; determine if there
is significant relationship between the common errors and the demographic profile of
the participants; and lastly, if there is a significant difference among common error of
the students in solving word problems dealing with linear equation.

A total of 12 2nd year Bachelor of Secondary Education students major in

Mathematics, 6 female and 6 male students were used in the study. The students’
age, gender, school graduated in (public or private to get their demographic profile.
The statistical tools used to analyze data were fisherman exact test and frequency
percentage.

The common error committed by the students are based on Newman Error
Pattern Analysis; Reading, Comprehension, Transformation, Process Skills and
Encoding. Majority of them are graduated in a public schools and the range of their
age are from 19 – 28 years old.

From the information gathered, it was found out that the most error wherein
students prone to are in comprehension level. It means that majority of them are
troubled to understand the whole problem itself that is why it was hard for them to
transform it into mathematical equation and did not come up to the final answer.

Furthermore, based on the study, we concluded that there’s no significant

relationship between the common errors and the demographic profile of the
participants and there is no significant difference among common error of the students
in solving problems dealing with linear equation.
