the scene, she had no busi-
nesses or marketing skills.
It isn’t often one gets to
speak glowingly of Goldman
Sachs these days. But the
global banking firm’s “10,000

tries, including Afghanistan,
Brazil, China, Egypt, India,
Rwanda and the U.S.
The idea is that creating
a women’s labor force is
key to long-term economic
growth. This would seem to
be common sense rather than
advanced economic theory,
but such brilliance is scant in
underdeveloped, war-ravaged
countries or where women are
often treated as subhuman.
Sometimes we need scien-
tific research to advance the
simplest of notions. Research
for the program showed that
investing in women would
profit the human race through
a multiplier effect. Not only
would education lead to more
employees for business and
increased revenues (always
the bottom line, right?), but
more prosperous women
mission is to create global
business school partnerships
to improve business educa-
tion. Today, more than 30 of
the world’s leading business
schools, including seven of
the top 10, are participating.
The program is coordinated
locally through a network of
nongovernmental and aca-
demic agencies.
Listening to Fatima,
Masooda, Malalai and a sec-
ond Fatima, I was struck by
their humility, but especially
by their courage. Not once in
my crowded day do I have to
worry about my safety as I go
about the necessary machina-
tions of a normal workday.
I have met numerous
Afghan women the past year
or so through various organi-
zations working to help them,
and each time they say the
same thing. This time was no
different: Don’t feel sorry for
us. But please, don’t forget
us.

TIPP CITY — It has been
28 years — since 1982 —
since the Elida football team
had played in a playoff game;
they’ve never won one.
No one told them they
should have been nervous and
simply grateful to be there.
The Bulldogs came out
on fire and grabbed a 19-0
first-half lead over host Tipp
City Tippecanoe on a chilly
Saturday night in Tipp City
and then held off a furious
Red Devil rally to emerge
with a 26-21 triumph in a
Region 10 quarterfinal.
Elida (9-2) will head to
Piqua at 7 p.m. Saturday to
battle Columbus Bishop
Watterson, a 14-7 victor
over Columbus St. Francis
deSales.
“This is an awesome feel-
ing. It’s been a long time to
even be this far and we came
out with a lot of emotion,”
Elida coach Jason Carpenter
said.
That sentiment was echoed
by sophomore linebacker
Quentin Poling.
“It’s hard to put this into
words. We had a lot of sup-
port and backing from our
fans and they really helped us
tonight,” Poling noted.
The ’Dawgs used a 17-yard
kickoff return by junior Austin
Etzler to commence the first
drive at the 30. Running a
crisp shotgun offense, the
Orange and Black took 12
plays and 4:56 off the clock to
draw first blood. Junior Colin
Blymyer (17 rushes, 79 yards)
ran four times for 21 yards
and junior Reggie McAdams
(23-of-32 passing, 271 yards)
was 4-of-6 for 33 yards. At
the Red Devil 6, McAdams
faked Blymyer to the left and
kept the ball over right guard,
pounding his way to paydirt
at 7:04. Nathan Jenkins (3
grabs, 20 yards) lined up for
the extra point but the snap
was dropped, resulting in a
6-0 lead.
The Bulldog defense

up at the Tipp City 48. With

ended on another intercep-
tion of Jake Watkins (4-of-12
passing, 50 yards, 2 picks),
this time by sophomore Josh
Carder.
“We got those turnovers,
which helped, but we if we
don’t hurt ourselves, it could
have been 35-0 at the half.
Those are things we need to
correct next week,” Carpenter
said. “We played a great game
but we needed that big lead
because we knew Tipp City
would come back. They made
it close in the second half.”
A 27-yard kickoff return
by Nick Fischer set the Red
Devils at the 36 to open the
half. Their powerful running
game, which had been held to
56 yards the first half (finish-
ing with 268 for the game in 58
tries), began to get revved up.
They needed 13 plays — all
but one a run; an incomplete

run to the right side and kept
it around left end, speeding
