The Rich Man and Lazarus

Luke 16: 19-31

Characters:

1. Narrator
2. Lopez (Rich man)
3. Lazarus (Poor man)
4. Abraham
5. Angels
6. Moses and five brothers

Props:

1. Purple and fine linen (robe) worn by Lopez


2. Wood gate
3. Table with a miscellany of expensive and excessive things, bountiful food
4. Two dogs
5. Music for the scenes (drums and desperate cries)
6. Chairs clothe with fine linen for the table
7. Lights effect
8. Food (in a plate with cooked chicken and fruits)
9. Two tombs
10. Smoke machine

Setting:

1. House of the rich man


2. Hell
Opening scene 1
The narrator is standing on the side of the dining table in front of Lopez, Abraham and Lazarus
standing side by side on a high cliff looking down at the rich man crying in pain and agony also
stretching his hands toward Abraham and Lazarus but both kept a straight face. Abraham was
holding a plate with food and fruits
Lights are focused on the Lopez, Abraham, and Lazarus
Lights went off but returned as soon as the music starts to play in loud tune
Music (drums effect) starts to play signifying the opening of the play the narrator starts to talk

Scene 1

Narrator: When Jesus, the Son of God, lived on this earth, this is what He told us.. (said the lines
in a loud voice)
There once was a rich man, he wore expensive clothes and ate to his heart’s content
(focusing lights on Lopez while eating)
Lopez: (laughs loudly while eating a handful of food after the other making a gobbling up sound)
I have everything in this world, I have all the food I want.
Narrator: At the rich man’s gate, there lived a poor man named Lazarus, the dogs came and licked
his sores he was intently looking at the food and tried to ask for even a small portion of scraps but
Lopez intently shove him away.
(Lights focusing on Lopez and Lazarus)
Lazarus: Sir, can you spare even a little amount of food? Or even those scraps from your table?
I’m so hungry (He was intently looking at the food on the table while holding his stomach)
Lopez: Who are you? Get out of my face you peasant! (facial expressions change to happy turned
angry, and shouted at Lazarus; he then stands up and shoved Lazarus away with angry eyes)
Lazarus: But sir, please I beg of you even the scraps on your table I’m willing to take it, please
spare me for I am sick and hungry. I have nothing left. (a cry of plea can be heard an Lazarus
kneels down to beg Lopez)
Lopez: It’s not my problem that you are poor and has nothing to eat, it is your fault for being poor
now get out of my face! (Voice echoing with anger and turns around leaving Lazarus kneeling)
(Lights slowly went off while focusing on Lazarus and a music drums effect were played)

Opening scene 2
Lights went on; drum effects are played again
As lights went on focusing on the two tombs laid side by side. Both Lazarus and Lopez is dead but
Angels can be seen beside Lazarus, background music of humming is played and flowers on top of
his tomb but effects of smoke are seen on the side of Lopez and a red light focusing on his tomb.
The narrator will be seen walking in front of the two tombs.
Lights is focused on Abraham, Lazarus and Lopez

Scene 2

Narrator: The time came when Lopez and Lazarus died, the rich and poor man. The poor man
named Lazarus was carried away by the Angels while the rich man named Lopez was in Hell, they
finished up in two very different places. (narrator is walking in front of the two tombs as he/she
deliver the lines)
(Angels appeared when Lazarus died surrounding him with blinding white light and background
music of Angels humming is played. Lights are focused on Lazarus and Lopez)
Narrator: In hell, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with
Lazarus by his side, he then called out. (sounds of burning wood is played, people crying in agony
in the background)
(Abraham and Lazarus standing side by side on a high cliff looking down at the rich man while
Abraham was holding a plate of food and fruits in his hand while looking down at Lopez with no
emotions, Lopez then said)
Lopez: “Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water
and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.” (crying and desperate sounding voice, he
was extremely crying because his body was burning in the heat and desperately trying to get out
of the flames, he was stretching his hands towards Abraham and Lazarus)
Narrator: but then Abraham was intently looking at him with no emotions and said,
Abraham: "Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus
in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. Besides all this,
between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here
to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us." (Lights focused on Abraham and
Lopez, Abraham is seen handling over the plate of food and fruits to Lazarus and he then receiving
it)
Narrator: In reply, the rich man Lopez said
Lopez: "Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father's house -- for I have five brothers -- that
he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment." (crying and desperate
sounding voice, background music of intense burning and people crying for help is heard but in a
low tone)

Abraham: They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them

Lopez: (protesting voice) No father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they
will repent

Narrator: Abraham in reply said,

Abraham: If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if
someone rises from the dead.

(background music intensify and a sound of heavy thunder was heard. Lopez was seen sinking in
the lava and flames engulf him and Abraham and Lazarus was walking away from the scene and
lights fade out)
