5. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

5.1 General
For details of site environmental conditions refer to Project Group Basic Engineering
(Design) Data BEDD Engineering Standard 01A1.

All field mounted panels, cabinets and enclosures shall be suitable and certified for the
area in which they are to be installed. If necessary pressurised enclosures may be
required.

All field mounted panels, cabinets and enclosures shall be fabricated from 316
stainless steel.

Cable entries shall preferably be located in the bottom of the enclosure.

All entries shall be sealed with proprietary items suitably certified to maintain the overall
integrity and certification of the enclosure.

Labels shall be attached to enclosures using stainless steel screws; the fixing shall not
affect the certification or ingress protection rating. All label requirements shall be in
accordance with Instrument Label Specification 64A3.

5.2 Junction Boxes

Junction boxes shall be sized to be large enough to accommodate the required amount
and type of terminals and to ensure adequate access and space for cable installation
and termination.

Junction boxes shall be supplied fully fitted with terminals, mounting rails, accessories,
etc.

Minimum Certification shall be Exe to IEC 60079-7 for use in areas classified Zone 1
Gas Group IIC Temperature Class T4 as defined in IEC 60079-10 for sheet steel
enclosures.

Junction boxes used for Foundation Fieldbus (FF) signal will be Exn as minimum
depending system type.

Ingress Protection shall be minimum IP65 as defined in IEC 60529. For areas such as
jetties where there is a greater risk of prolonged exposure to water then Ingress
Protection shall be IP66.

Junction boxes shall be fabricated from 316 stainless steel, all welded construction,
with a minimum material thickness of 1.5mm for box and cover and 2.0mm for gland
plate and shall have an electro polished surface finish. The front cover shall be hinged
and removable; it shall be secured by stainless steel fixing screws which are retained
when cover is opened.

Junction box cover and removable gland plate shall be sealed with a chemical resistant
gasket.

Junction boxes shall be suitable for surface mounting and shall have 4 off external
fixing lugs.

Junction boxes shall be fitted with an M10 internal/external grounding stud.

Junction boxes shall be fitted with a correctly certified Breather/Draining device having
minimum Ingress Protection of IP65.

A gland plate shall be fitted to the bottom of the box only. The gland plate shall be
sized to accommodate the entries required and ensure that an allowance is made for
access to tighten glands. The gland plate shall be drilled to provide entries for the total
amount of cables that can be terminated in the box and all unused entries shall be
fitted with a plug that is correctly certified to maintain the overall certification and
ingress protection of the box. Where there are two vertical rows of terminals in the box
the gland entry for the multicore cable shall be in the centre of the gland plate. Gland
plate shall have a earth lug connected to box earth.

All terminals shall be screw clamp type to suit solid or stranded conductors up to
2.5mm2.

The terminals shall be mounted in vertical row(s) and shall be complete with all
necessary mounting rails, end stops, brackets, jumper bars etc.

Terminals for Intrinsically Safe (IS) circuits shall be colour blue.

Terminals for non IS circuits shall be colour beige.

Linking of terminals shall be by proprietary jumper bars. Flexible wire links shall not be
used except to link terminals in separate rows.

Terminals shall be identified by means of pre-printed plastic insert markers, black

characters on white background; these shall be fitted to both sides of the terminals.

The front cover of each box shall have a top hat facility to enable a label 130mm wide x
30mm high to be fitted by means of stainless steel screws, self locking nyloc hexagon
nuts and washers without affecting the certification or ingress protection rating. A
facility on IS junction boxes to mount a IS warning label is mandatory.

5.3 Local Panels

Layout of the panel shall incorporate all required devices and terminals and ensure
adequate access and space for operation, maintenance, cable installation and
termination.

Front of panel mounted switches and pushbuttons shall be designed and located to
avoid inadvertent operation. Switches and pushbuttons for initiation of Safety
Instrumented System (SIS) shall be provided with shrouds or guards.

Front of panel mounted lamps shall be LED type, and shall be provided with a lamp
test facility. Lamps shall be designed to be visible under bright sun light conditions.

Panel shall be supplied fully fitted out and wired. Internal wiring shall be segregated by
voltage level and any intrinsically safe wiring shall be run in separate loom or trunking.
Sufficient slack shall be allowed to ensure there is no stress or strain on the wiring
when a cover or lid is opened.

Panel enclosure and components shall be certified in accordance with IEC 60079 for
use in the area to which they are to be installed.

Where components cannot meet the required certified area then another type
protection shall be use Exd or Exp.

Where touch screen displays are mounted on front of panels they shall be certified for
use in the specified hazardous area or mounted in a pressurised enclose so
pressurising does not cause damage to screens.

Ingress Protection shall be minimum IP65 as defined in IEC 60529.

Local panel should be designed to include protection for local high ambient
temperature conditions that could cause risk to electronics by canopy or sun shade.

Panel enclosure shall be fabricated from 316 Stainless Steel, with a minimum material
thickness of 1.5mm and shall have a non reflective finish.

Removable covers, lids and gland plates shall be sealed with a chemical resistant
gasket.

Where panel enclosure is suitable for surface mounting it shall have a minimum of 4 off
external fixing lugs.
