numbers on the Komodo National
Park.
The Komodo National Park is now
listed among the 10 top tourism
destinations beyond Bali that are

by the Ministry of Tourism.

planned closure of the Park as
needed to increase the population
of the world's largest monitor
lizards, after which the park is
named, and the wild deer on which
the reptiles feed.
Meanwhile, naturalist and wild
habitat specialists are said to be
confused, questioning how closing
the Park to tourists will supplement
the population of either Komodos
or wild deer. Meanwhile, long-time
observers blame the declining
deer population at the Park on
illegal poaching, a problem that
might only be exacerbated by
closing the park to tourist visitors,
allowing poachers to kill wildlife
unchecked by outside
observation.
The Governor of NTT, Viktor
Bungtilu Laiskodat, told the press
on Friday, January 18, 2019: “The
Government of NTT will survey
and organize the Komodo
National Park in order to make it
better and so the Komodo dragons
will develop. We will close the
Komodo National Park for one
year.”
The Governor, however, has not
explained when he plans to close
the Park.
Viktor said the closing of the
Komodo National Park will
facilitate the local government in
organizing the Park. The Governor
said the habitat of the Park located
in West Manggarai Regency is in
decline and the bodies of the of the
reptiles are growing smaller due to
the decrease in deer population –
a main source of food for the
Komodo Dragons.
Viktor is concerned that a decline
in deer population could cause the
dragons to eventually turn to
cannibalism in order to sustain
themselves.

tourist are only ordinary travelers.”

Kiyoshi Kimura bought the
278kg (612lbs) bluefin tuna,
which is an endangered
species.
He spent more than twice
the previous record of $1.4m, which
he paid in 2013.
Wholesalers and sushi company
owners often pay high prices for the
best fish at the first pre-dawn auction
of the new year.
"I bought a good tuna," Mr Kimura told
AFP after the auction.
"The price was higher than originally
thought, but I hope our customers will
eat this excellent tuna."
Mr Kimura has been the highest
bidder at the new year auction for
seven of the past eight years.
On a normal day a similar sized fish
would sell for around $60,000.
Today's record is in part about status -
and it creates a lot of publicity for Mr
Kimura and his sushi empire.
But it is also a reflection of the scarcity
of large Pacific bluefin tuna. They are
officially listed by the WWF (World
Wildlife Fund) as an endangered
species.
In 2018 catches off the coast of Japan
were significantly down, and since the
middle of last year prices in Tokyo
have climbed by more than 40%.
The 2019 auction is the first new year
sale to take place at the new fish
market on the site of a former gas

plant in Toyosu, which
opened in October.
The previous site at Tsukiji
opened in 1935 and
became the world's biggest
fish market and a popular
tourist attraction.
However issues including
concerns about outdated
fire regulations and hygiene
controls prompted the
market to be moved to a
larger and more modern
site.
The International Union for
Conservation of Nature's Red List of
Threatened Species says Atlantic
Bluefin are endangered while the
Pacific Bluefin are vulnerable.
The country said it would withdraw
from the International Whaling
Commission (IWC), which banned
commercial whaling in 1986 after
some species were driven almost to
extinction.
Conservation groups have warned
that the move will have serious
consequences.

Smoky steak and mushroom stroganoff
Ingredients Directions:
1 tbsp olive oil, plus a glug
Knob of butter
400g mixed mushrooms, halved or quartered if large
1 onion, finely sliced
500g lean British sirloin or rump steak

2 tbsp tomato purée

Heat the oil and butter in a non- stick frying pan over a
high heat, add the mushrooms and cook until golden
brown. Transfer to a plate, then add a glug more oil to
the pan and cook the onion over a medium heat for
about 10 minutes until softened and golden brown.
Meanwhile, season the steaks with salt and freshly
ground pepper. Heat a griddle pan and, when smoking
hot, sear the steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side, then
set aside to rest before slicing into chunky slivers.
Stir the paprika, tomato purée and browned
mushrooms into the onions and cook for 1-2 minutes.
Pour in the brandy or wine, bring up to the boil and
bubble for a minute to reduce, then add the stock and
bring back to the boil.
Turn down the heat and simmer gently for 10 minutes.
If you prefer your steak well done, add it now with the
soured cream and simmer everything for 10 minutes
more. If you like your beef rare, take the pan off the
heat and stir in the soured cream and steak.
Squeeze over lemon juice, season generously, then
scatter with the parsley, if using. Serve with rice and a
dollop of mustard, if you like.

It's a Test series many
expect Australia to win
and just the tonic needed
for a lift ahead of the
World Cup and Ashes.
But Sri Lanka, ranked one spot
behind their opponents in sixth
position, will be confident off
matching India's efforts and
claiming their first series victory
on Australia soil.
The household names of
Muttiah Muralitharan and
Kumar Sangakarra might be
long gone, but Sri Lanka have a
new wave of players that have
developed and are prospering.
Here are five players to
watch throughout the
series.
Dimuth Karunaratne
It was a tick over six years
that Dimuth Karunaratne
first arrived in Australia
surrounded by some of
his nation's finest.
In just his second Test,
Karunaratne opened up

Two and a half years ago Kusal
Mendis registered his maiden
