What is the NICU?
● Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
● Preemie - less than 37 weeks
● 10 -15% of infants will visit the NICU
● 15 million newborns every year
● Problems that place babies in NICU

How does the NICU help?
● Incubators to keep warm
● Phototherapy for jaundice
● Feeding tubes to check digestive system

● To be released from the NICU, babies must:
○ Have fully developed skin
○ Be able to regulate their own temperature
○ Be able to eat on their own
Problems with Prematurity
