PROBLEM SET
I. Study/Research/Analyze the topic “Size and Slenderness factors” (Section
615.3.5 and 615.3.6) in NSCP 2010 or 2015 and answer the following
problems. (Also, use Timber Design textbook by Besavilla for reference)

1. A cantilever beam having an unsupported length of 3m. Has cross section of

200mm x 400mm. It carries a uniformly distributed load “w” kN/m throughout
its span. Allowable bending stress if Fb = 9.6 MPa and modulus of elasticity
of 13800 MPa.
a. Compute the allowable bending stress with size factor adjustment.
b. Compute the allowable bending stress with slenderness factor adjustment.
c. Compute the safe uniform load “w” that the beam could carry.

2. A 100mm x 300mm rectangular beam carries a uniformly distributed load of “w”

over its entire span. The beam is freely supported at its ends. If the max.
Allowable bending stress is 8.27 MPa and simultaneously the max. Allowable
shearing stress is 0.70 MPa. E=13,500
a. What is the value of max. vertical shear?
b. Compute the safe uniform load “w” that the beam could carry considering
the governing bending stress in size factor and slenderness ratio
adjustments.

II. Study/Research/Analyze the topic “Notching on Trusses” and answer the

following problems. (Also, use Timber Design textbook by Besavilla for
reference)

1. The force on the 100 mm x 100 mm strut that makes an angle of 30° with
respect to the horizontal is 30KN. The angle that BC makes with the
horizontal is 12°. Allowable compressive stress parallel to the grain is 7.8
MPa and allowable compressive stress perpendicular to the grain is 2.62 MPa.
Using Hankinson’s Formula.
a. Compute the compressive stress on section
AB.
b. Compute the allowable compressive stress on
section AB.
c. Compute the compressive stress on section
BC.
d. Compute the allowable compressive stress on
section BC.

2. For the timber joint is shown in Figure, Ѳ = 30°. The allowable compressive
stresses are 19.65 MPa and 2.76 MPa parallel and normal to grain,
respectively. Determine the safe value of F.

III. Solve the following problems.

1. A 150 mm x 450 mm wooden beam carries a concentrated load of 30.55 kN

at its midspan. It has a simple span of 8 m. long. Allowable shear
stress is 0.85 MPa.

a. Which of the following gives the depth of notches at the support if

notching is allowed using the NSCP specifications?
b. Which of the following gives the allowable depth of notches at the
bottom and top faces of the beam at quarter points?
c. Which of the following gives the flexural stress at the quarter
points after deducting for notching?

2. Determine the maximum spacing of the wooden purlin shown in the figure
with the following data:
Ø = 50.28°
Wind load, W = 1.4364 kPa
Dead Load, D = 0.3744 kPa
Bay Distance, L = 3.05 m
Allowable bending stress, fb = 6 MPa
Purlin size = 50mm x 150mm

3. A distributed load of wo lb/ft is

applied over the middle 6ft of a
simply supported span 12 ft long. The
beam section is shown in the figure.
Determine the maximum value of wo
flexural stress ≤ 1200 psi, shearing
stress ≤ 120 psi,and the pitch of the
screws if each screw can resist 200
lb.
