The quote says that we must always be vigilant; we must always be on the alert if we want to

preserve our freedom. There will always be someone who will want to give up freedom. The
most plausible candidate is the government because it has the power to do that. Therefore, the
quote assumes that someone is always trying to take our freedom, and therefore we must always
be on guard. It can be said that the present democratic political power has turned into an enemy.
And when you deal with an enemy every day, you have to defend yourself.

With the idea that they will not change anything in the political structure of the state, most
Romanians give up voting. That sounds something like: “I do not wash my teeth because no one
kisses me. That's why no one kisses you!” Why did this happen? Because I did not listen to
Thomas Jefferson's words: we were not vigilant. When vigilance decreases, citizens lose their
rights and freedom.

Democracy means balance and respect between the powers of the state, relies on trust and,
above all, the vigilance of citizens. In Romania, the so-called “democracy” seems to end. But
let's not forget that hope dies the last. But do we have still the power to hope? Time is still...
