Progress Report on my Thesis Work

Title: An artificial neural network based model to predict the severity of wheats stem rust

The aim of this report to show the ongoing activities and work done through each phase of the
reach

My Thesis work explorer on designing a hybrid framework combining data mining result, which
extract hidden knowledge, designing a patterns from a large datasets. Integrating those result with
self-learning knowledge base system to support diabetic diagnosis and treatment for the patient as
well as for medical technicians. Until now the researcher covers the following point

1. The Researcher already covered chapter one, which include the background of the study,
motivation of the study, statements of the problem, general objective, specific objective,
scope of the study, limitation of the study, drafting research questions, significance of the
study and impact of or negative consequence of the diabetes in the world, Africa, Ethiopia
aspect. Extracting hidden knowledge or patterns from a datasets is manner thing but, The
main challenges for this work is data gathering, integrating data mining result with self-
learning knowledge base system and selecting best machine learning algorithms, which
perform more and best accuracy the get best data mining results
2. The researcher cover chapter Two (Conceptual Discussion and Literature review), which
has Two parts. The first part deals or incorporate the concept of artificial intelligence, data
mining, knowledge discovery, machine learning , category of machine learning (supervised
learning, unsupervised learning reinforcement learning), machine learning tasks,
difference between machine learning and data mining, machine learning algorithms
knowledge base system, expert system ,the difference between the knowledge base system
and expert system, knowledge base architectures, basic component of knowledge base
system etc. The second part incorporate related work review deals about the paper which
have been done before. The researcher reviewed many papers from international journals
and local papers which more relate with my Tittle.
3. The researcher was gone to Addis Ababa the capital city of Ethiopia to conduct necessary
information regarding with my thematic area from 22/07/211 to 17/08/2011 questioners
 and data collection were done from both Arba minch General Hospital and Addis Ababa
Kidus Pawulos Millennium Medical College.
4. Limitations (challenges)
The data mining rule state that data has to be at least 5000 as a minimum requirement, in
order to get such amount data, the researcher trying to collect from different hospitals. The
challenges during questioner and data collection is that, the stake holders are not available
on time on their office and they appointed me for next days, at this time the researcher
expose for extravagance (another expense), even some stakeholders are not willing to help
me. Some domain experts are willingly support me even though the domain experts were
nor ready on time as the researcher required. The main challenges that the researcher faced
were budget. The researcher were received the minimum budget as first phase of the
research activity from the total grant awarded for this thesis work (8333.33/25,000). The
cost of travelling, breakfast, lunch, dinner, bed rooms and all goods and service during my
data collection activities were not equivalent with the per diem allowed for researcher. This
was the main challenges that the researcher was faced during questioner and data collection
even though lots of experience was captured.
