 Introduction
l. Background of the Study
Wattpad is a place to discover and share stories: a social platform that connects people
through words. It is a community that spans borders, interests, languages. With Wattpad, anyone
can read or write on any device: phone, tablet or computer. This online entertainment is getting
stronger and most of viewers are teens commonly students because it can kills boredom. It has
different genres including classics, general fiction, historical fiction, non-fiction, poetry, spiritual
and teen fiction.
All the stories on wattpad are free. Readers don’t need to pay to join the site or download
the app, or to read any of those stories. There is a lot of interaction on the site too. Comments
are open at the bottom of each “part” and the most popular stories generate a lot of feedback.
This site is one of the most trending sites because many students can easily relate their life to
those fictions.
Wattpad was created in Toronto in 2006 by two engineers, Allen Lau and Ivan Yuen. Lau
and Yuen were conscious of two behavioral characteristics of their generation: they like reading
and they are constantly glued to their mobile phones. What is more, they sensed that the
technology which existed at that time did not satisfy the need to read on mobile phones. That’s
how they ended up creating a platform for ‘mobile reading’ which today has 45 million readers
and writers from all over the world - who spend 30 minutes at each session - and attracts 130,000
new users every day. In March 2014, Wattpad signed a contract with Pop-Fiction, an imprint of
Summit Media, to print Filipino Wattpad Stories in the Philippines. The other publishers from the
Philippines also publish stories from Wattpad.
According to the study by Adam Popescu, eighteen million readers and writers around the
world spend 4.5-billion minutes a month publishing, collaborating and skimming text
on Wattpad, the biggest under-the-radar e-literature community on the web.
The purpose of this research is to see what are the effects of different genre that the
Grade 10 students reads on their academic performance. To know if wattpad can really affect
the grades of the students. And to know what would be the possible reason why their academic
performance is high or low.
ll. Statement of the Problem
Generally, the study aims to determine the effects of Wattpad on students.
Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:
1. Is reading Wattpad beneficial for students , or does it simply distract them?
2. Are there negative impacts of reading wattpad on students' behavior and performance?
3. What are the pitfalls, students should avoid on Wattpad?
4. Is there a possible way for the students to minimize their time on Wattpad?

lll. Significance of the Study

The result of this study may provide information on how Wattpad affects student’s
behavior and performance. This research may be beneficial to the students, community as well as
future researchers.
This study is significant to the following:
Students. This study will help them determine the effects of Wattpad to their lives.
Community. This study can help the community be aware of what Wattpad brings to the lives of
many people. Individuals might be informed such things about the effects of this.
Future Researchers. It may serve as a basis for the researchers to conduct similar studies in the
future. This research can be a reference for those persons interested in discovering the effects of
wattpad to a person’s life.
 Methodology
Research Design
The researchers will use descriptive analytics in their study in order to collect all the data
needed and it will provide a better understanding of the research problem that using either of each
(qualitative and quantitative) alone. The study will be conducted to determine the effects of
Wattpad towards the academic performance of selected Grade 10 students of Amadeo National
High School.

Respondents
The respondents of the study are Grade 10 students of Amadeo National High School
chosen through quota sampling. The respondents will be chosen based on a set criteria: a) The
respondents should be a student who read Wattpad and b) The respondents should be a student
who do not read Wattpad.
After computing for the needed number of respondents and considering the criteria, the
researchers should conducting their survey to a population of 75 students. However, due to
unavoidable circumstances, only 50 students responded.

Research Instrument
The researchers used survey questionnaire consist of 1 question that were answered
through the use of Ordinal Questions with options 10-20 minutes, 30-40 minutes, and 1 hour- 2
hours.
The researchers also conducted a Textbox Questions which they ask to drop their grades
in English, Science and Math.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers provided a request letter, asking for permission to conduct the study. Upon
approval, the researchers presented the letter of permission to the teachers before disseminating
questionnaires. The researchers used the vacant time of the students as well as the interviewee to
avoid class disruption.
 Results and Discussion

 This study contains of 50 students from different section of Grade 10 in Amadeo National
High School. In this paragraph, you will be able to know the number of respondents who
read Wattpad.

Interpretation:
 10% of the students who read Wattpad got a grade between 74 & 78, while 8% of the
students who do not read got a grade between 74 & 78.
 46% of the students who read Wattpad got a grade between 79 & 83, while 64% of
the students who do not read got a grade between 79 & 83.
 48% of the students who read Wattpad got a grade between 84 & 88, while 40% of the
students who do not read got a grade between 84 & 88.
 46% of the students who read Wattpad got a grade between 89 & 93, while 38% of the
students who do not read got a grade between 89 & 93
Conclusion
Wattpad can be very addictive. So addictive that you miss out on your study
hours. Based from the results of the survey, it can greatly affect your studies, may it be
positively or negatively. Most of the respondents from Amadeo National High School reads
wattpad everyday and they spend an hour or minutes on reading it. In this study it indicates that
wattpad doesn’t affect the academic performance of the students. There are some of the
respondents academic performance has affected and also almost of them read wattpad everyday
and more than 2 hours but as you can see the results only few of them has been failed. Wattpad
will not give you a bad effects if you can manage your time between your studies and for being a
wattpad reader.

Recommendation
The researchers recommend to the future researchers who would like to have a further and
deeper understanding of this study, to focus on the effects of wattpad to the health of the students
who loves to read wattpad
The researchers would also recommend to the future researchers to focus on how they can
manage their time on reading wattpad and on their studies.
