Solving Radical Equations

8-8 and Inequalities

A radical inequality is an inequality that

contains a variable within a radical. You can
solve radical inequalities by graphing or using
algebra.

Remember!
A radical expression with an even index and a
negative radicand has no real roots.

Example 5: Solving Radical Inequalities
Solve .
Method 1 Use a graph and a table.
On a graphing calculator, let Y1 = and Y2
= 9. The graph of Y1 is at or below the graph of Y2
for values of x between 3 and 21. Notice that Y1 is
undefined when < 3.

The solution is 3 ≤ x ≤ 21.

Method 2 Use algebra to solve the inequality.

Step 1 Solve for x.

Subtract 3.
Square both sides.

Simplify.

2x ≤ 42 Solve for x.
x ≤ 21

Method 2 Use algebra to solve the inequality.

Step 2 Consider the domain of the function.

2x – 6 = 0 The radicand cannot be negative.

2x = 6 Solve for x.

x=3
D: [3, ∞)
The solution of is all values of x
within the domain and x ≤ 21, so 3 ≤ x ≤ 21.

Solve 3𝑥 + 2 − 1 ≥ 4
Method 1 Use a graph and a table.
On a graphing calculator, let Y1= 3𝑥 + 2 − 1 and
Y2=4. The graph of Y1 is at or above the graph of Y2
for values of x greater than 7. 6. Notice that Y1 is
undefined when < -2/3.

The solution is x ≥ 7. 6

Method 2 Use algebra to solve the inequality.

Step 1 Solve for x.

3𝑥 + 2 − 1 ≥ 4 Add 1.
3𝑥 + 2 ≥ 5 Square both sides.
2
3𝑥 + 2 ≥ 5 2 Simplify.

3x + 2 ≥ 25 Solve for x.

3x ≥ 23
x ≥ 7. 6

Method 2 Use algebra to solve the inequality.

Step 2 Consider the domain.

3x + 2 = 0 The radicand cannot be negative.

3x = -2 Solve for x.
x = -2/3
D:[-2/3, ∞)
The solution of 3𝑥 + 2 − 1 ≥ 4 is in the domain
D:[-2/3, ∞) and x ≥ 7. 6, so x ≥ 7. 6.
