BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM

Social Networking Sites, most notably Facebook have become so popular today.
Facebook is a social networking site that enables us to communicate with our family, friends;
including old friends or current friends. It also enables us to post whatever we wanted to post
in there and we can update the happenings of our life. Facebook is currently being used
regularly by the students and is widely used nowadays in our developing country. Young
people, specifically students love to spend most of their time checking their Facebook
updates, but have you ever thought what would be the negative effects of Facebook usage
on students’ behavior towards others? We the researchers, predict that Facebook will mostly
bring negative effects on students’ behavior towards their friends, families and other people
if they use or log onto Facebook so repeatedly, they might be addicted and will not interact
with their classmates, friends, family and to other people. They might not be able to make a
bond with their families if they log onto Facebook most of the time. They might not be able to
participate in class and cooperate with their classmates and teachers.

This study aims to explain the importance of the proper usage of Facebook and the
negative effects of it on the behavior of students towards others. In order to provide much
help, this study would like to give enlightenment to the said phenomena. Through this
research, we would like to provide information about the impact of this site to students’
behavior that would hopefully lead to a realization of their own standing in terms of using
Facebook. We would also like to give guidance to those students who were very addicted on
Facebook in order for them to interact and socialize with their friends, family and other
people especially in participating and cooperating in class and in any activities because the
students who were very addicted on Facebook will give more attention on it instead of giving
more attention on their families, friends, in their class and activities. We will give them an
advice to lessen their time in logging onto Facebook and change their behavior of being
such a Facebook Addict and to socialize more with people and will not divert their attention
on Facebook.

The reason why we pursue to study this issue is that we want to help our co-
students to lessen or minimize in using Facebook App because we, the researchers, as
students as well, we have observed in our own selves that spending too much time in this
app lead us students to don’t prioritize our academics.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This research will purely focus on the negative effects of Facebook usage on the
behavior of students. This research will also focused on finding ways to motivate and
encourage the students to give more attention to their friends, families and other people than
giving more attention in logging onto Facebook most of the time. This will be limited on the
Grade 11 students in Isabel National Comprehensive School. The scope of the study is to
find out what would be the negative effects of Facebook Usage on the behavior of students
towards others.

In order to interpret the data, researchers will use thematic analysis. During the
vacant time, researchers will conduct survey at Grade 11 ABM- Bungalon, using of
purposive sampling. Researchers will choose students who are fond of using Facebook.
Researchers will pick five students at first and then add another five students afterwards.
Researchers will stop if saturation point is met.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research aims to help the students to be aware of what would be the adverse side
effects of excessive usage of Facebook and be able to assess themselves as to how their
behavior be affected.

This study will be of benefit to the following:

Teachers- will benefit from this study of what will be our findings and recommendations.
They will be able to keep track and assess their student’s profile and behavior especially to
those students who have access to electronic devices that can link to social networking sites
particularly Facebook.

Parents- This study is also helpful to parents because they will be able to know their
children’s profile especially on their behavior towards others and will be able to coordinate
with the teachers to improve and maximize the capacity their parental guidance’s of their
children, and they will be able to help their children and motivate them to interact and
socialize with them, with their friends and with other people and encourage them to give
more attention with others personally than giving more attention on Facebook.

Students- the students will be aware of the adverse side effects of the excessive use of
Facebook. This will be helpful for them to know what will be the effects of using Facebook
App on their behavior. They will be able to lessen or minimize in using this App.

Future Researchers- This study will provide baseline data needed for future researches
and studies related to this one.
DEFINITION OF TERMS

In order to understand clearly the subject matter, we define the following key concepts as
they are essential to fully comprehend the issue in focus.

Social Networking Sites- are social services that focus on building online communities of
people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests
and activities of others.

- Is an online platform which people use to build social networks or social relations
with other people who share similar personal or career interests, activities, backgrounds or
real- life connections.

Facebook- is a social networking site that enables us to play, communicate with family,
friends; including old friends or current friends, and also to find new friends and we can also
get and gather informations there.”

- users can post comments, share photographs and post links to news or other
interesting content on the web, chat live, and watch short-form video.

- It uses a program that searches through your e-mail contacts and compares the
list against its membership database.

- Facebook is the most widely used social networking site by the people.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The researchers want to know about the Negative effects of using facebook app on
the behavior of grade 11 Students.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

1. How many hours do students use Facebook App a day?

2. What are the factors affecting the student in using Facebook App?

3. What are the negative effects of using Facebook App?


REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Social networking sites let individuals to present themselves, and begin or keep
connections with others. The extremely popular social network sites for students in different
levels. Facebook has already printed a big impact on their lives. The site can be used
towards work-related contexts, romantic relationship commencement and connecting those
with shared interests. Members may use the site to mingle with people they already know
offline or to find new friends. Facebook permits its users to present themselves in an Internet
profile, build up “friends” who can post comments on each other walls, and view each other
page.

Facebook associates can also join groups based on common interests, see what
things they have in common, and learn each other hobbies, interests, favorite music, and
romantic relationship status through their pages.

According to studies, Facebook has an impact to students. Some students are using
it for educational purposes. Students would like to do some online collaboration with
classmates. It is said that Using Facebook boost students’ self-esteem even more.

They would feel belongingness in the community compared to those who do not have
accounts. It also provides news on what are happening in the real world and even in their
school campuses. On the other hand, negative effect flourish. It was found that social
networking sites have formed a new kind of addiction which we called the “Social Media
Addiction” and it is quite true in using Facebook. It depends on the level of cravings. But in
recent study, it was found that a lot of students are by now addicted to it, to the extent that
their school performance is affected.

“Children who spent much of their time online find it harder to focus in class and have
short attention span” researchers found through the samples that 7 out of 10 teachers
believed that their students are becoming obsessed with social media sites such as
Facebook. Their student tends to study while using Facebook and it shows that they get
20% lower grades.

Facebook-using students even perform task (projects or assignments) without


completion for the reason that they spend more time scrolling down newsfeed to see
updates about their friends and look up for their notifications rather than finishing their school
tasks. Aside that Facebook affects students’ academic performance; it also has an effect on
students’ emotional health. Yes, students feel connected to others but study shows that they
manifest depression through seeing their status updates. Some would utilize the site to
express what they feel towards their enemy in school or even outside the campus. They
would blurt out through posting status that would target their opponent just to hurt their
feelings.

With the rampant use of all the social networking sites, students are coming loose to
the real associates. Facebook chats and posts would make them busy nowadays. They may
be connected to many people but they somehow disconnect with the important aspects of
their lives and one of those is education. The belief of meeting people face to face seems
very odd. Students prefer to send and receive instant messages through Facebook.

Many other elements could be the reason for the inattention in studies of students.
But somehow social networks like Facebook have a negative impact on the education of
some students. Facebook could make students vain for better or for worse and it is the
parents’ obligation to watch and guide their children to get the utmost good benefits from
Facebook.

Most of the time, students spend their time hanging around the web with the popular
social networking sites. Everyday, more and more people are getting more attached to
Social Networking sites as it is now moving in as one of the primary means of
communication of people.

Despite the fact that Facebook is extremely helpful, it is still not perfect because
there are still some negative points we can encounter while using it.

Some of the Bad Effects are: it invades your privacy, distracts you in everything you
do, too much attachment to it may lead to spending too much time in it without doing your
tasks, there are some wrong informations released by unauthorized people that causes fear,
reduction in real human contact, coming loose to the real associates and inattention in
studies of students.
