INTRODUCTION

I. Background of the Study:

Aware of the important role that mathematics plays in our day to day
activity, this research study is conducted.

Mathematics programs in school have changed and appropriate resource

materials are provided to cope and implement the change. In fact, several
interventions have been designer which geared toward meeting the needs of the
different groups and levels of pupils.

As an adviser of Grade V-Rizal pupils, at Noli Central Elementary School

(Bayugan West II) I always expect that when pupils reached Grade V, they are
already prepared skilled and honed to answer word problems involving
Mathematics especially that I am holding the section I. But sad to note that in my
class of 34, 11 or 32% of them have hard time answering Mathematics problems.
This has always been the reason why pupils get lower scores during the
achievement test.
II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study is conducted to determine the factors affecting the mathematical skills
of Grade-V Rizal pupils during the school year 2018-2019.

1. OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

This study is designed specifically to seek an answer to the following

questions:

What is the profile in terms of?

1.1 Mastery of four (4) fundamental (skills) operations

1.2 Mastery in analyzing the steps in problem solving
1.3 Mastery in solving 1 to 2 step word problems

2. STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESIS
1.) Will these low performing pupils in Mathematics be helped
2.) Will there be changes in their skills in solving word problems?
3.) Does the lack of mastery in the fundamental operations & basic skill in
Mathematics a contributing factor affecting low performance in Math?

IV. Results of the Study

After the data is being generated the researcher made an interpretation

and tabulation. The following are the summarized and interpreted data based
on the question formulated on the questionnaires given to the respondents.

Presentation of Data:

Table I

Level of Mastery of 4 Fundamental Operations

Level of Mastery

Mastered Not Mastered

Fundamental Total %
Male Female Male Female
Operation
1) addition 0 0 0 1 1 9%
2) Subtraction 0 0 1 1 2 18%
3) Multiplication 0 0 1 2 3 27%
4) Division 0 0 1 4 5 46%
TOTAL 0 0 3 8 11 100%

Based on the data/table presented, it is noticed that 32% of the pupils have
not mastered the fundamental questions especially in multiplication and division.

2. What are the 0 0 0 0 3 8 11 100%
given facts?
3. What word is 0 0 0 0 3 8 11 100%
the clue?
4. What operation 0 0 0 0 3 8 11 100%

7. What is the 0 0 0 0 3 8 11 100%
answer?
8. How do you 0 0 0 0 3 8 11 100%
check the
answer?

Table 2 shows that a number of pupils have poor analysis on the problem
solving especially in determining the operation to be used based on the given
clue.
Table 3
Solving 1 to 2 step word problem
Level of mastery
Mastered Nearly Mastered Not Mastered
Total %
Male Female Male Female Male Female
0 0 0 0 3 8 11 100%

Based on the table, most of the respondents have a difficulty in analyzing

two word problems. They still have to be given some hints as to arrive to the right
solution.

V. Conclusion and Recommendation

After gathering, interpreting and tabulating the data being generated, the
researcher finally made a conclusion.
Results shows that the respondents have a hard time analyzing word
problems involving Mathematics because they don’t master the fundamental
operations which is very essential and very basic tool in problem solving. The steps
in the problem solving have to be taken into consideration also, so that the pupils
will be able to analyze the problem step by step following the given clue. These
factors have an impact towards mastery of the skill thus utmost attention has to
be made by Mathematics’ teachers in the field.
VI. Recommendation

In order to build a solid Mathematics foundation and to

make solving problems more fun, likeable & challenging, with
the conclusion stated, the researcher would like to
recommend this study to all grade levels of Noli Central
Elementary School in order to at least lessen the difficulty of
pupils in solving word problems on Mathematics, thus,
improving the Mathematics skills of pupils.
