Analysing Momentum
1. Diagram 1 shows a squid that is attacked by a fish. In case of emergency, a squid will
eject a stream of black fluid so that it can escape from its enemy.

Diagram 1

(a) In Diagram 3, draw and label the direction of the velocity of the black fluid
ejected by the squid, v1 and the recoil velocity of the squid, v2.

[ 2 marks ]
(b) Name the physics principle in (a).

[ 1 mark ]
(c ) State a special feature of the body of the squid that enable it to move swiftly in
water.

(d) In other of applications a boy launching a water rocket bottle using the bicycle
pump at the field.

(i) The mass of the bottle rocket is 0.2 kg and the velocity of the water
ejected is 2 ms-1 . If the mass of the water is 0.2 kg, calculate the
velocity of the rocket bottle.

(ii) Name one application of the physics principle stated in (a) in sports
field.

Analysing Forces in equilibrium

2. Diagram 2 shows a cargo ship is being towed by two towing boats using the same
force 1200 N each. The resultant force from the two boats causes the cargo ship to
move forward.

Bot Penunda 1

F = 1200N

Cargo ship 40 °
Kapal kargo

F = 1200N

Towing Boat 2
Bot Penunda 2

Diagram 2
(a) What is the meaning of resultant force?
[1 mark]
(b) Based on Diagram 1:
(i) Sketch the resolution of force 1200 N for towing boat 1 to its
components. [1 mark]
(ii) Calculate the horizontal component of force acting on towing boat 1.
[2 marks]
(iii) Calculate the resultant force acting on the cargo ship. [2 marks]
(c) Explain why a cargo ship off its engine a few kilometres from the harbour and
has to be towed to the harbour.

[ 1 mark ]
b) i) Calculate the weight of the box, W

[ 1 mark ]
ii) Calculate the resultant force, parallel to the ramp.

Understanding Elasticity
4. Diagram 4.1 shows two identical steel balls placed onto spring M and spring N. Both
springs are elastic and fixed to a horizontal surface. The springs are pushed down
until the length of spring M and spring N are the same.
Diagram 4.2 shows the maximum heights reached by the balls when the hands are
released.
[Assume spring M and spring N are of the same material, same coil diameter and
same original length]

a) Using Diagram 4.1 and Diagram 4.2, compare the thickness of the spring wire
and the maximum height reached by the balls.

Relate the thickness of the spring wire with the maximum height of the ball to
make a deduction regarding the relationship between thickness of the spring
wire and the elastic potential energy of the spring.

5. Diagram 5 shows an electric motor lifting a 2.0 kg load. When the motor is switched
on, the load moved through a height of 1.5 m in 2.5 s with constant speed. The
current flowing in the circuit is 1.7 A and the potential difference across the motor is
10.0 V.

6. Diagram 2 shows a baseball player wearing a soft thick glove to catch a ball during a
baseball match.
