Scene 1: Intro
Roelle
Magandang gabi mga kapamilya mula sa Luzon, Visayas, at
Mindanao. For the past decade, there have been significant
advances and monumental breakthroughs within the field of
medicine. From innovating outdated practices to outright
discovering preventative measures towards certain diseases, it
seems that there is no end as to what humanity can do with the
knowledge in its hands. And, with the advent of technology, we
only seem to further our development. This next innovation
also aligns itself with such an achievement. Who knew, that a
fruit as simple as the Aratiles would have astounding
characteristics such as anti-diabetic properties? That is what
Maria Isabel Layson, had studied upon. Join us in hearing the
story of a remarkable research study that had the eyes of the
international scientific community upon it. Handa na ba kayo
mga madlang pipol?!
*cuts to scene with Ryden and Antoinette walking side by side
and eating aratiles*
Roelle:
It all started when Isabel’s grandfather had bore the news of
him suffering from diabetes to his granddaughter.
Antoinette:
What a wonderful day it is, isn’t it, lolo?
Ryden:
It truly is, apo.
Antoinette:
What should we do today, lolo?
Ryden:
Apo…I have something to tell you.
*Ryden faces Antoinette*
Ryden:
I’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, apo.
Antoinette:
*gasps* What?! Since when?
Ryden:
A few days ago, apo. The doctors told me that I have to
undergo treatment soon but…if you ask me, I’m not sure if I’ll
make it.
Antoinette:
Don’t say that, lolo! You’ll get through this. We’ll be there
for you.
Ryden:
*smiles* Oh apo, how lovely of you to say that. It’s no wonder
why you’re my favorite grandchild. I love you so much, apo
but, I had to tell you even if it’s also painful for me to
bear. I needed you to know because that’s how much I love you.
Antoinette:
*Antoinette becomes teary-eyed* Thank you lolo and me too, I
also love you. That’s why, stop being so gloomy! Let’s go
outside and walk around.
Ryden:
Yes, let’s.
Roelle:
But that happiness was cut short when her grandfather had died
due to his diabetes.
*Cut to Antoinette crying*
Antoinette:
*shouts* Lolo!

Scene 2: Second Part

Roelle:
Years later after the death of her grandfather, Isabel had
attended Iloilo National High School’s Special Science Class
and that was where she began her journey towards her exemplary
study entitled “Bioactive Component, Antioxidant Activity and
Antidiabetic Properties of Muntingia calabura Linn. (An In
Vitro Study)”
*scene cuts to a classroom with Antoinette and Merick*
Merick:
Okay class. As part of your requirement as a student of
Special Science Class, you need to come up with an
experimental study as soon as possible. Of course, first,
think of a topic and then narrow it down until you have a
title. After that, present it to me so that I can further add
onto it. Remember, you must make it so that by the time it’s
summer, you’ll start conducting your experiments. Otherwise,
you’ll fall behind, fail and will not be able to move up to
Senior High. Any questions? No? Then that’s all for today,
good bye.
Antoinette:
Thank you and good bye, Sir Aponte.
*Merick leaves the scene*
Antoinette:
A study…what problem do I choose? What topic should I have?
Where do I conduct my research? So many questions yet so
little time. I wonder-
*Antoinette gets hit by an aratiles*
Antoinette:
Ow! What the-huh? *picks up Aratiles* Aratiles? Hm, this
reminds me of the good ol’ days with me and lolo. *smiles*
Wait. Aratiles…Diabetes…That’s it! *moment of realization
dawns upon Antoinette* I’ll conduct a study regarding aratiles
and if it has anti-diabetic properties!
Roelle:
And that’s where it all began. With that, Isabel had a topic
in her hands and soon enough, the title of her research study.
Countless times did she defend and reason out her topic to her
teacher-turned-adviser Sir Aponte.
Merick:
What makes you think you can do this, Layson. This is absurd!
Antoinette:
Sir, it can be done! I’ve read and reviewed my study’s related
literature. It all adds up.
Merick:
Well, what makes your study so special? Do it again. I can see
the potential, yes, of course but, the title can be done
better than this.
Roelle:
Not one to give up, Isabel worked hard every single day until
her title was approved.
*scene moves to Merick approving Antoinette’s study*
Roelle:
Thus, she started her experimentation. Going back and forth
between Manila and Iloilo. She did her research in Food and
Nutrition Research Institute laboratory wherein she had
discovered that aratiles is a source of antioxidants and, as
quoted, “practical application that can be directed towards
the prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus through the
prevention of postprandial hyperglycemia.”
*Cut to Antoinette doing various laboratory activities*
Antoinette:
At last, I’ve finished!
Scene 3: Last Part
Roelle:
After finishing her experiment, Isabel prepared herself for
the competitions to come. From that of the District Science
and Technology Fair all the way up to the National Science and
Technology Fair. Receiving countless awards and prizes along
the way.
*cuts to scene where Antoinette defends her study*
Antoinette:
And that was my study entitled “Bioactive Component,
Antioxidant Activity and Antidiabetic Properties of Muntingia
calabura Linn. (An In Vitro Study)”. Judges, I am now ready
for your questions, suggestions and recommendations.
Ryden:
*raises hand* Why aratiles?
Antoinette:
*smiles* As you can see, sir, aratiles is a common fruit here
in the Philippines. Like all the resources within our country,
we must learn how to maximize them and for me, it was the
aratiles. And, also, the aratiles is also quite significant
for me.
*everyone applauds*
Roelle:
And, of course, as hard work is always repaid, Isabel’s reward
came to her in the best way possible.
*cuts to scene of an awards ceremony*
Roelle:
And our finalist who’ll be representing the Philippines in the
Intel-ISEF, we have, in the Life Science Category, Maria
Isabel Layson with the research entitled “Bioactive Component,
Antioxidant Activity and Antidiabetic Properties of Muntingia
calabura Linn. (An In Vitro Study)”. Her coach is Mr. Ronilo
V. Aponte.
*both Antoinette and Merick walk to the center and smile while
being given a medal and certificate by Ryden*
*Merick and Ryden leave scene and Dencir enters*
Dencir:
Good day Miss Layson, I am a representative of the Gokongwei
Brothers Foundation Incorporated. We would proudly sponsor you
and your travel to Intel-ISEF!
Antoinette:
What, really?! I’m so honored.
Dencir:
As are we, Miss Layson. We shall further discuss the details
on a later date. Good day to you.
Antoinette:
To you as well.
*Dencir exits*
Antoinette:
Although research has been integral to our society since time
immemorial, where there is research there is also technology.
Information and Communications Technology played an important
part in Layson’s research as, without the various instruments
and devices used, she would have a hard time in conducting her
study. That is why, we have to thank ICT for not only
providing us more convenient ways to live life, but also
helping us within the fields of STEM.

END.
