Introduction
 When the soil on a project site can not support the
loads, ground improvement to increase strength ,
reduce compressibility and enhance performance
under applied loading may be required.
 Improve the properties of the ground prior to
construction.
 Redesign the structure according to the ground
condition.
What is Ground Improvement?
• Ground improvement refers to a technique that
improves the engineering properties of the soil mass
treated.Usually the properties that are modified are
shear strength , stiffness and permeability.

• With the help of ground improvement shear strength

increases and permeability and compressibility
reduces.
Method of ground improvement:-
1.Ground reinforcement:
• Stone column
• Soil nails
• lime-column
• Mechanically stabilized earth
2.Ground improvement:
• Surface compaction
• Surcharge
• Blasting
• Dynamic compaction
3. Ground treatment:
• Soil –cement
• Dewatering
• Heating/freezing
• flyash
Soil cement method:-
 Soil cement is a construction material, a mix of
pulverized natural soil with small amount of
portland cement and water, usually processed in a
tumble, compacted to high density.
 Hard, semi-rigid durable material is formed by
hydration of the cement particles.
Uses of soil cement method:-
 Failing granular-base pavements, with or without
their old bituminous mats, can be salvaged,
strengthened, and reclaimed as soil-cement
pavements.
 This is an efficient, economical way of rebuilding
pavements. Since approximately 90 percent of the
material used is already in place, handling and
hauling costs are cut to a minimum.
Objective of work:-
 To study about soil cement roads.
 To study about construction methods.
 Discuss about various properties of soil
cement roads.
 Discuss about advantages and
disadvantages of soil cement roads.

Remarks:-
 Liquid limit decreases by adding cement in yellow clay
soil
 Plastic limit varied by adding cement in yellow clay soil
 Plasticity index decreases by adding cement in yellow
clay soil
 Maximum dry density and optimum moisture content
of yellow clay soil are 1.55gm/cc and 27.39%
respectively
 CBR value of unsoaked and soaked soil increases at 2.5
mm penetration and 5.0 mm penetration by adding
cement in yellow clay soil
Advantages
 Economic and Environmental
Benefits
 Low First Cost
 Fast Construction
 Recycling of Existing Materials
Disadvantages:-
Need to follow the standard strictly. if not, the result May not
work properly.
2. Water still be able to penetrate if Capillary void too big.
3. If the percentage of Cement too high, it’ll create crack. Due
to less flexibility (too brittle) Normally the optium
percentage of cement shall be lesser than 7% by weight of
dry soil.
4. It’s not suitable for some type of soils.
5. The homogeneously mix is strictly concened, then this
process need experienced supevisor or quality equipment
to process.
6. Can not operate if moisture of soil above 10%.
