Centre Likely To Allow Its Employees To Work Until 62

New Delhi: The central government is likely to agree the text of new rule that will allow millions of central government employees
work until they are 62 years of age.

The central government is likely to decide to raise the retirement age from the present 60 to 62 years for its employees.

As people are living longer and are in better health, many central government employees want to work for longer, but they cannot
because of a mandatory retirement age of 60.

Today, a top government official told The Sen Times ,“central government is likely to agree to increase the superannuation age to
62 for all employees, which will get the cabinet’s nod by June 2019, if BJP wins the 2019 general elections. Modi government will
not announce the increase of retirement age before general elections 2019 because the BJP’s youth appeasement policies.”
The new law will provide for an increase to age 62 in the retirement age for central government employees.

The central government employees currently have the retirement age of 62.
The new retirement law is on the priority list of central government to be published and it is expected to be published in the period
June-July 2019.

While the new law will allow most central government employees to work up to 62 years of age, they will be still be free to retire at
any time if they so wish.

“The concurrence of Modi government, Madhya Pradesh BJP government extended retirement age from 60 to 62 in March, 2018
ahead of general and state assembly elections, 2019. While Chhattisgarh BJP government already increased the age of retirement to
62 years from 60 for its employees in 2013,” the official said.

“The announcement by Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh had led to speculation that Centre too could make an announcement in
this regard but the official announcement can’t be made on August 15, 2018,” he added.

It’s worth to mention that the retirement age is different for professors in all central universities and central government doctors.

For central government doctors and professors in central universities, the retirement age is 65 years.

In the mean time, Attorney General K K Venugopal on Friday said the government should consider raising the retirement age of
Supreme Court judges to 68 and High Court judges to 65. It is currently 65 and 62. When a judge can work at 68, why central
government employee can’t work at 62.

A parliamentary committee, in its report tabled in Lok Sabha in February 2014, recommended that retirement age should be
increased from 60 years to 65 years, citing the increase in ageing population and their productivity.

After considering all pros and cons, if Modi government finally takes decision, it will only be the third time the government will
have raised the retirement age.

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister to have increased the age of superannuation from 55 to 58 following the 1962 war
with China. The Atal Bihari Vajpayee government did it a second time in 1998.
