CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

I.Introduction

K-pop or Korean pop is a musical genre consisting of a wide variety of audio elements that originated
from South Korea. It has already grown popular among teenagers and young adults in Asia because
of social media. Many people nowadays enjoy K-pop even though they don’t understand the whole
music. They are not only into the music but also in the choreography. Popularity of Korea takes by the
k-pop music and k-pop artist, Korean influence Filipinos from hip hop and R&B. The best example
here is Psy’s “Gangnam Style” Which was released in July 2012“Gangnam Style” gained billion of
views on YouTube and achieved international recognition. As a result, it has massively influenced
worldwide popular culture in many aspects.

Some people ask these questions: Why do you love K-pop when you don’t even understand what
they’re singing? Why do you love them? Why are most of you into K-pop? Why is it so influential? Is it
only about the looks? Why do Filipinos love Korean music in spite of the language barrier? As Pool
(2012) says in magazines K-pop is going to be K-hop. Now K-hop is getting in on the act like Big
Bang and 2ne1 and other K-pop groups. So , they said that Korean is good at dancing modern
dances especially in entertaining, They enhance their skills to improve their talent especially in
dancing and singing within 5 years or more than on it .it is noticeable fans doing dance covers of their
favorite k-pop stars all around social media K-pop stars hit songs usually have dance moves that are
intriguing yet simple inviting viewers to dance along ( Zestya, 2011) In Korean music, there are at
least few steps that are so catchy that make fans move and dance it. Here wondering why many
people love k-pop? Here are the reasons many teenagers and young adults do. The addictive
melody K-pop has extraordinary and unique melodies. Their music is appealing to listen to and they
instantly stick in your brain to the point that when you hear them, you’ll really try hard to sing the lyrics
even if you don’t know the exact lines. The choreography is where K-pop artist are completely
dominating. They perform routines that are so complicated and challenging. Their choreography is so
insane that it needs hard work, practice, and skill, yet K-pop artist are known for performing them
even live, proving that they are truly skilled and professional artists .How they do it?

It is observed that Western artists often become famous in a short period of time. K-pop artists are
trained and mentored by their managers or agents for years before recording their first song. They
spent intensive training to make them performers by the time they make their DEBUT. The fashion
K-pop idols bring a new level of concept in fashion. Their outfits and styles are quirky yet fashionable.
Sometimes their stylist try to bring the unique aspects over the top, Which can lead to strange and
bizarre outfits that may be seen in a strange way if they wore it in public. But K-pop stars are not
ashamed of making a splash on their outfits and have a unique way of interpreting the current trends.
The looks and personality this is what we truly admire in K-pop stars: they are down-to-earth. They
really give importance to their fans in such way that you’ll fall for them over and over again. Their
funny, witty and charming personality will make you go crazy over them. There physical appearance?
It’s too obvious. K-pop idols have alluring looks that will make you drool every time you see them in a
video, in stolen shots, or in magazines. They are so kyeopta that you can’t even pick one of them as
syour bias. They said they are open to new culture. Due to the influence of K-pop many teenagers,
especially a K-pop fan or a K-Series fan, want to go to South Korea. K-pop is one way for Korean
idols to appreciate and promote their culture. We, as fans, open our perspective to know and learn a
different culture.

Another thing why K-pop music is so popular in Philippines is because of the theme song of what in
Filipino called “koreanovelas”. ABS-CBN and GMA, and other networks, tagalized the movies or
teleserye from Korean language to tagalog, is the reason why do Filipinos love it. The music of the
koreanovelas or what we called OST is also tagalized, like for examples:”pag-ibig na kaya” from
princess hours, “I Believe“ from the sassy girl and “I think I love you” from the teleserye full house.
Nowadays, K-pop just keeps on hitting the local charts, although tagalized version are not that
anymore (Villoja & lucceane, 2011). K-pop culture / k-pop is a part of Korean wave which marks a
global phenomenon originating in south korea at the beginning of 21 st century that had a strong
impact throughout the world and influenced contemporary culture, music, film and television industry.
While the modern form of k-pop can be traced back to the early 90s. The term itself has been
popularized since the 2000s, replacing the term gayo which also refers to domestic pop music in
south korea.
K-pop as we know it started with Seo Taiji and the boys who debuted in 1992. They are recognized as
being the first k-pop boy group. There were the first experiment with rap, techno and a Americanized
pop sound/ image modern K-pop “idol” culture began with the boy band H.O.T in 1996, as K-pop grew
into a subculture that amassed enormous fandoms of teenagers and young adult.

Hallyu is the increase in global popularity of South Korean culture since the 1990s. The term hallyu
was first used by the ministry of culture and tourism in Korea in 1999 when it produced a music CD
titled in Chinese hallyu – “song from Korea”. Popularity of Koreans is becoming a ubiquitous presence
in the Philippines with tourist arrivals. Based on the data gathered by Liquirer Research, the figure
would make them the largest group of foreign citizens to ever have landed in the Philippines.

Filipinos are also into K-pop or Korean pop music. From the first generation idol groups such as Seo
Taiji and The boys,Sechs kies,Turbo,S.E.S.Shinhwa,Fin.K.L in 90’s to Epik high,TVXQ,Super
junior,Bigbang,Brown Eyed Girls,Girl’s Generation,Wonder girls in the 2000’s and
Infinite,Sistar,ZE:A,EXO,AOA and BTS IN 2010 to the present and more new idol groups to debut.
Filipinos just can’t stop loving them and are always looking forward to their fan meeting and
concert.Filipinos created a pop genre that reflects our culture all of our pop songs are Americanized
Filipino have plenty of original song in Filipino language but there is no trace of Filipino
culture, rhythms,or instrument in the music. It’s just tagalog songs with American style R&B or
rock.Filipino pop music has done nothing like that. The closest that Filipinos have come to creating
their own modern day genre is budots that rhythms have their origin in badjao gypsy street music
though, which is cool but they say that is not very popular or mainstream at all.

One of our representatives in K-pop idol that half Filipino and half Chinese is Kreisha chu she
appeared on K-pop star 6 and made a pretty good impression to the big 3 she debuted in 2017 under
urban works entertainment Tem5ive/teamfive is a group consisting all Filipinos and they’re getting
ready to debut in korea. Here are the some of kpop songs and dances that has been popular in the

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter presents the review related literatures and studies which is both local and foreign which
contains facts and information on the research problem at hand after the through and in depth search
done by the researchers. It provides explanations and collaborations between previous researches
and present works of this generation. This will also present the synthesis of the theoretical framework
and conceptual to fully understand the research.
Theoretical Framework

K-pop or Korean pop is a popular genre in South Korea. In 1996 the boy band H.O.T began the K-pop
idols which led to the beginning of K-pop culture and grew into a subculture that assemble huge
fandoms of teenagers and young adult. In 2007 TVXQ and BoA started a new generation of K-pop
idols that broke the music genres and start the spreading of K-pop culture in all parts of Asia.

Korea Then and Now This is a brief look at major events and era’s in South Korea’s rapid, record
breaking 30 year development and the rise of Kpop thereafter. Called the Miracle on the Han, the
development of a devastated post War Korea to one of the top 15 economies in the world has
shocked many. It should have been impossible they said, and many countries search for the elusive
South Korean model. Yet, as we see here this Miracle is no miracle at all. It has risen from many
specific, historical events that cannot be replicated by another state. These are the events and the
experiences of the Korean people during development. Unless otherwise stated, all information on
general Korean history comes from “Han Unbound: The Political Economy of South Korea” by John
Lie. Information about the Rise of Kpop comes from Shim Doobo’s “Waxing the Korean Wave

The History of Kpop (Korean Pop Music

Korean pop, or Kpop as it is more popularly known as, is a huge hit among Korean and international
students. With Korean music getting recognized on the Asian market, as well as at a worldwide level,
Kpop is becoming extremely popular among both Korean speaking people and non Koreans. The
history of Korean pop music is not very old. Pop music has become quite popular in Korea due to the
Western influence of pop music. This doesn’t mean that Western culture is overtaking the Korean
culture, but more that it was the start of various popular music channels like MTV and internet
sources, that have spread pop music and had a great influence upon the inspiration of Korean
musicians, as well as general music lovers. When we look at the history of the Korean pop music, we
find out that the Kpop music radio has indeed played a great role in promoting it and bringing it to the
masses. The Korean youngsters are absolutely in love with their Korean pop music bands and are
really proud of the fact that many of them have gained recognition on an international level as well.
The history of Kpop music is quite exciting, although quite short, with the rapid spread of Kpop music
radio shaping it. In fact, over a period of only 20 odd years, South Korea itself has evolved from being
a poor country, to being a major international player with incredible commodities and technology. With
the coming of many great bands like FINKL and Super Junior, many music lovers which are not
familiar with the Korean language are also loving the Korean music a lot. Meaning that in a very short
period of time, Kpop has in fact become a major export for the country. The Korean pop music history
does not date back to very old times, as It was just back in the 1990’s that pop music started to
becoming really popular in Korea. Since then, many bands and singers have emerged on the scene,
some of which even proved to be world class players. However, Korean TV shows have spread the
scene further, with many 'soaps' being a huge hit across Asia and some finding niches in the west.
Although many people say that bands like Wonder Girls are actually inspired by the Western girl
bands from their make up, to the music that they make, it is in fact that most modern dance music
actually has +a universal language and style ... it is not set in a specific place, or from a particular
descent, although I guess it must have started somewhere first, way back in history.

Gangnam Style! More recently, the crazy dance moves of Psy have sent Kpop truly global. This trend
caught on, went wild on YouTube and soon topped the charts of the US and USA, despite hardly
having any lyrics in English. The dance is fun, silly and lively ... which seems to have caught the child
hidden within clubbers around the globe. The routine truly went viral on YouTube, where many
uploaded their own variations. The music itself is about the romantic dance that goes on between
single guys and girls. It is also a 'tongue in cheek' poke at the very 'classy' upper market party area of
Gangnam in Seoul, where previously you would never seen anyone dancing in an off the wall fashion
like this. This song is now on many advertisements, especially on South Korean TV. The words and
moves have turned PSY into a world mega star overnight. Suddenly the world wants to know a bit
more about South KoreaSince modern Korean pop music took shape in the early 90’s, the Hallyu, or
Korean culture wave, has been steadily building into a global phenomenon. Fans of BIGBANG, EXID,
and Girls’ Generation are now found all over the world, alongside legions of K-drama TV junkies and
Korean film devotees.

General Objective

The main objective of this study is to explain the beginning of "K-pop culture”. The entertainment
brought by K-pop culture, how they affect the culture of Asian countries especially Philippines. What is
the reason why K-pop culture is so catchy on millenials and the opportunities that you may encounter
if you become a fan, How K-pop culture led to huge changes on Filipino teenagers on how they deal
with their environment on their lifestyle when they start to idolize K-pop. To understand the feeling of
the fans when they knew K-pop culture, the advantages and disadvantages of being so obsessed on
K-pop culture. When it begins to spread in Asian countries and how does it becomes so popular in
just a snap of fingers that it invades Asian teenagers and their culture.

The rise of K-pop Culture in Asian countries brought changes on its people and its culture.

This study will be meaningful because it will help us to understand the feelings of millenials on how
they interact with other fan and not fan or how they treat everyone.

For millenials idolizing K-pop individuals or group brings enjoyment, happiness, fulfillment, inspiration
and motivation to fans by simply watching music and listening to it, posters, shirts with names or faces
printed on it, caps or anything with a sign or picture/s of their idols. Also, it helps Koreans to spread
their language throughout the world.

Char I love my life thee there are so many things to be gratefull  hiihiih I know life is hard but you
don’t n
Moreover, there is also competition in the domestic music market for external cultural influences,
because the State realizes that local programs do not meet the needs of consumers. However, this
represents a rich and creative area for Vietnamese artists to move into; to develop new themes, from
the old nationalistic and patriotic theme (based on war and propaganda songs), to a new material pop
culture (Thomas 2004).

According to Fukunaga (2006), people hugely interested in foreign popular cultures will probably
develop a critical attitude, cultural knowledge, and foreign language skills. People that have an
identical tendency towards a kind of pleasure item have a characteristic language use

The style of YGLC is more hiphop dance. I am not really interested in K-Pop dancing anymore but I
am into YG entertainment. They are like American living in Korea. The style, music, everything do not
look like K-Pop at all. It is K-Pop because they sing in Korean but their style music is not because
they don‘t sing Pop, they just sing Hiphop, R&B, Jazz and some kinds of really artistic music (Nhat-
Anh 2014

Trish (2014) also stated that most fans, especially those who are new to the K-pop world, are usually
excited about not understanding the songs. It gives a hint of mystery to the listener to guess the
song’s message and it makes the listener just solely feel the song and the emotions of the singer.
Once that person looks up the English (or Arabic) translation of it, it often makes the listener feel the
song even more

(Yoo, 2017)The authors conducted statistical data analysis to identify patterns in Korean popular
songs & composer/singer networks during the past 50 years with the use if text mining of association
rule analysis, the findings indicated that the words “love” & “heart”, which evoke romantic love, were
the most commonly used expressions in K-pop songs from 1964 – 2012 reference to love gradually
become more direct over the years of the study, reflecting an increasing willingness to acknowledge &
discuss romantic relationships additionally, most of the songs after 2000 include works in English
pointing to K-pop’s growing presence in an international market.
(Hiller and Harrison 2007) the active K-Pop fandoms emerging in different places in the world which
includes the Philippines, allow some of these queer teens to ―perform‖ their sexuality on stage as
they join cover groups and compete in cover group competitions

Pacis, JC (2012) Korean pop (K-pop) music fan culture in the Philippines. It describes how the culture
was developed & how the fans interact with one another in the fan community.

Paul Willis (1990) asserts that ―musical performance… amounts to an important expression and
celebration of sociability enabled through some shared sense of grounded aesthetics. It is inherently a
collective activity‖

Although Hirsch(1971) correctly predicted the structural nexus between mass media technologies and
new popular music genres, as evidence in the case of radios after the massive success of TVs and
the roll music.

(Doobo Shim, 2006) states in “Hybridity and the rise of Korean popular culture in Asia” that the
popularity of Korean pop culture has, the regional fans are eager to learn the Korean language and
travel to Korea.

Megan Garber (2016) states, “The reaction video may be about people watching people; it is also,
however, about the pleasures of watching as a group. As an audience, As a fandom, As a public.”
This group dynamic allows people who may not be able to find many other fellow Kpop lovers in their
regional vicinity to collectively engage with other fans dispersed all over the world.

Sun Jung (2011) articulates the connection between fans’ performativity in dance covers and their
subversion of normative constructions of gender through shifts between “boy group” and “girl group”
choreography.
Performing fandom through the affective labor of dance covers allows the performer to become
intimately connected to the K-pop idol they are embodying through dedicated imitation of the idol’s
behavior (Käng, 2014).

K-pop fans who choose to represent themselves through reaction videos embrace this transnational
mode that is literally “as private as one’s living room and as public as the internet” (Antebi, 2009)

Therefore, popular music is a genre that people like listening to, so pop music is simply music that
people enjoy listening to at the present time (Moore, 2003).
