Introduction

I. Imagine you are walking down the street.

A. You have no criminal record, but you have a few grams of marijuana in your
pocket.
i. Do you know that you could be facing a $2000 fine and a year in prison?
ii. All for a few grams of a substance that has no adverse health effects.
II. I know you are thinking, “How does this affect me? I don’t use marijuana at all!”
A. But it doesn’t matter if you use yourself.
i. If you are at a party with marijuana, you could be charged.
ii. If your roommate has marijuana, you could be charged.
B. Regardless of whether you personal use the drug, you could be fined and possibly
arrested for a crime that you have no connection with
III. America is faced with an epidemic of over sentencing and harsh punishment for a drug
that is less harmful than alcohol.
