ELASTOFLEX® EW 5322 C-A

Two component system for the production of flexible foam

System Description

Elastoflex® EW 5322 C-A : Mixture of polyols, activators, stabilizers, crosslinkers,

blowing agents and, if required, pigments and flame
retardants
Elastoflex® KW 5026 C-B : Formulation based on Diphenyl methane diisocyanate
(MDI) and Toluene Diisocyanate

Application

Flexible foam system Elastoflex® EW 5322 C-A is used for the production of seat cushion back
rests and head rest in automotives.

Receiving Control

If either the A or B components are partially or fully crystallized due to exposure to low
temperature during transport, the following procedure should be carried out immediately.

A component : Should be heated in the sealed drum to a temperature of 30±5℃ until the
material returns to the liquid state and the crystals have completely dissolved.
This material should then be allowed to return to normal storage temperature and
homogenized by stirring.

B component : Should be remelted in a heat chamber at an air temperature of approx. 60℃ to

70℃. The material temperature should not exceed 70℃. Just before remelting,
the drum seals should be loosened to prevent pressure build-up. The remelting
process should not be continued for more than 24 hours. After remelting the
material should be a homogeneous liquid. It should then be allowed to cool to
normal storage temperature.

Testing of reaction characteristics should be carried out at a material temperature of 23℃ using a
PE cups of 565 cc capacity. Prior to testing the A component should be homogenized by thorough
stirring. The A and B components are mixed together thoroughly for 6 sec. at a mix ratio of 100 : 65
parts by weight. Mixing should be carried out by mixing disc about 65mm in diameter. The reaction
characteristics of identical materials should be regarded as guidance values. Particularly the cream
time can vary slightly.

Reaction characteristics (cup test at 23℃)

cream time : 12 - 14 sec.

rise time : 90 - 110 sec.

Storage

The components are sensitive to humidity and should therefore at all times be kept in sealed drums.
Storage temperature should be 25℃ to 30℃. The maximum shelf life is 3 months. The shelf life of
the A component, however, can be extended to 6 months by supplying the activator as separate
components.

Preparation of Components Prior to Processing

Prior to filling of machine tanks the A component must be homogenized by intensive stirring. This
should be performed with a disc type stirrer 220 to 240mm in diameter using an approx. 4kw, 950
rpm stirrer motor. The 200 ㎏ drum should be stirred for about 60 minutes. The B component does
not require stirring. If system with separate activator and catalysts are supplied, special preparation
and receiving control instructions will be provided.

Processing

Elastoflex® EW 5322 C-A has a very short reaction time in order to permit rapid demolding of parts and
economical production. The system should therefore normally be processed on a high pressure machine.
The output of the machine should be sufficiently high to permit the required quantity of material to be
injected into the mold before creaming starts. The use of supplementary static mixing devices, which are
normally an integral part of the mold, is recommended.

The required material temperature will vary between 23℃ and 30℃. Mold temperatures will vary
between 50℃ and 55℃. The exact temperatures required will depend on what type of molding is to be
produced. In this context the shape of the part, the possible use of inserts, the position of the injection gate
and the mold material all influence required temperature settings. In order to make sure that series
production, components and molds, once established, should be kept as constant as possible. Due to the fast
reaction of Elastoflex® EW 5322 C-A even large parts, depending on their wall thickness, can be de molded
after 4 to 5 minutes.

Technical service engineers of BASF Company Ltd. provide assistance in optimizing production
conditions and in the selection of suitable release agents.
