SURREY RESIDENTS STRONGLY WANT A LEGAL AND SAFE RIDESHARING INDUSTRY
71% of respondents agreed that ridesharing drivers should use the same driver’s licenses as is
required in other provinces

5th July 2019 (Ottawa, ON) – A strong majority of Surrey residents believe that ridesharing options
such as Lyft and Uber should be available to Metro Vancouver residents, a new Mainstreet Research
survey has found.

The poll surveyed 725 residents of Surrey between June 23rd and 24th 2019. The poll has a margin
of error of +/- 3.98% and is accurate 19 times out of 20.

“78% of Surrey residents think that ridesharing should be a transportation option available to residents
of Metro Vancouver, with a majority strongly believing that this should be the case,” said Joseph
Angolano, Vice President of Mainstreet Research. “Similarly, we found that most Surrey residents
think that the British Columbia government should implement ridesharing as soon as possible.”

74% of respondents agreed that the provincial government should implement ridesharing as soon
as possible, with a majority (54%) saying they strongly agreed.

“These findings show that Surrey residents remember the promise made by all the major parties in
the last election to allow ridesharing in British Columbia,” continued Angolano. “Moreover, they fully
expect that the Horgan government keeps its promise and legalize ridesharing companies.”

The poll also found just under 80% of the respondents said they were familiar with ridesharing
services, with familiarity significantly dropping off among those over the age of 65.

“It is not surprising to see familiarity with Lyft and Uber lower among older respondents, as they are
less likely to use smartphones than younger respondents,” added Angolano.

The survey also found that 71% of respondents agreed that ridesharing drivers should use the
same driver’s licenses as is required in other provinces if they pass strict driving experience and
background checks, with a majority (52%) strongly agreeing. Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba, and
Quebec have all implemented a strict Class 5 licence requirement for ridesharing.

“The results of this survey are clear. Surrey residents strongly want to see a legal, safe, and well-
regulated ridesharing industry with drivers meeting strict requirements,” concluded Angolano.

Methodology
The analysis in this report is based on results of a survey conducted between June 23rd and 24th,
2019 among a sample of 725 adults, 18 years of age or older, living in the city of Surrey. The survey
was conducted using Interactive Voice Recording. Respondents were interviewed on both landlines
and cellular phones. The survey is intended to represent the voting population of Surrey.

The survey was conducted by Mainstreet Research and was sponsored by Ridesharing Now For BC.

The sampling frame was derived from both a national telephone directory compiled by Mainstreet
Research from various commercially available sources and random digit dialing. In both cases,
respondents were dialed at random.

At least two attempts were made to complete an interview at every sampled telephone number. The
calls were staggered over times of day and two days to maximize the chances of making contact with
a potential respondent. Interviewing was also spread as evenly as possible across the field period.

The questionnaire used in this survey is available in this report and online at www.mainstreetresearch.
ca. Questions are asked as they appear in the release document. If a question is asked of a subset of
the sample a descriptive note is added in parenthesis preceding the question.

The sample was weighted by population parameters from the Canada 2016 Census for adults 18
years of age or older in Canada. The population parameters used for weighting are age and gender.

The margin of error for this poll is +/- 3.98% at the 95% confidence level. Margins of error are higher
in each subsample.

The margins of error for each subsample is as following: Males: +/- 5.39%, Females: +/- 4.94%, 18-
34 age group: +/- 8.28%, 35-49 age group: +/- 8%, 50-64 age group: +/- 6.86%, 65+ age group:
+/- 7.04%.

In addition to sampling error, one should bear in mind that the wording of questions and practical
difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of opinion polls.
