Activity #1

Typhoon Yolanda caused the most visible destruction in Tacloban city, the capital of
Leyte province. The storm affected most of Eastern Visayas or Region VIII, the nation’s
3rd poorest region, with poverty incidence of 45.5 percent of the population, as of the 1st
semester of 2012. Most of the casualties came from Region VIII. The other areas hit were
the provinces of Cebu, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, and Palawan. President Benigno Simeon
Aquino III declared a state of national calamity, with the intention of fast-tracking relief
work focus on tacloban city.
Over 20 countries have pledged to provide humanitarian assistance. More than 32,000
foreign and local personnel have been deployed for response and related operations.
Almost 2,000 foreign and local medical personnel have been mobilized as well. Media
professionals did a great helped to gather donation through online. The social workers of
Tacloban played a key role in assessing the damage to the community and advising
rescue and medial teams. The focus was on getting food and supplies to people who
had lost all material possessions and who were dazed and in despair. Also, they to
provide authentication for the victims as their birth certificates and other paperwork were
all destroyed. With the help of different applied scientist the community’s recovery faster
to their normal lives. Working alone is hard but working as a team life would be easier to

rebuild.

worst. They need to be sensitive and slowly getting the clients trust so it would easier in

discussing the situation or problem. The privacy of the clients will remain confidential.

mental health challenges.

diversity because communities are, in their
nature, diverse systems.
Community counselors focus on a client's
environment to understand the cultural
factors that contribute to a client's health
while also addressing more high-level
systemic problems.
