TRIP – SATURDAY 15th JUNE
Blagaj
The beautiful Blagaj is a small town built at the start of the crystal-
clear Buna River as it flows out of the 200-metres high mountain cliffs
that overlooks the area. The river is surrounded by modern restaurants
and ancient Ottoman-era structures, including the Tekija, a 600-year old
Sufi-Dervish monastery built within the cliffs’ walls. Visitors can take boat
ride into the Buna Springs within the cave or hike up the narrow road
along the cliffs to the Stjepan-Grad Fortress on top of it.
Počitelj
The next stop is at Počitelj, about half an hour southwest of Blagaj.
Počitelj is a fortress village that sits on a natural karst formation on the left
bank of the Neretva River. The walled town is believed to have been built
in the 16th century, and features architecture from both the medieval and
Ottoman period. It was extensively destroyed, and its residents displaced
during the Bosnian War in 1993; but in recent years is being restored and
rebuilt.

8. IDEAS OF WHAT TO DO IN MOSTAR
The Muslibegović represent a noble lineage in Herzegovina, where its members were
governors for many centuries. Members of this noble family establish themselves in Mostar
at the end of the 17 th century following the fall of Herceg – Novi to the Venetians in 1687.
At that time, the Muslibegović is owned property all over Herzegovina (the southern portion
of today’s Bosnia and Herzegovina) and continue to extent substantial influence over social
and political affairs in the region.
The original building permit for this House is still preserved along with many other precious
books written in Turkish, Persian and Arabic. Here can be seen examples of Bosnian
traditional work, such as handkerchiefs, waistbands, napkins, purses, bed covers, socks,
and hammam sets. Anatolian kilims are hung on the walls.
Turkish house or Bišćevića corner is one of the most beautiful preserved residential
structure from the Turkish period. It was built in 1635.This 17th century Ottoman house rests
(some parts on the pillars over 5 meter long) on the eastern banks of the Neretva river.
There is a conversation or gathering room or divanhan preserved authentic Ottoman style.
Throughout the house are the original household objects and the courtyard is a fine example
of the Ottoman style.
Kajtazova House
Address: Gaše Ilića bb, Mostar 88000
The Kajtazova House is another fine authentic Ottoman residential house with separate
sections for men and women. High outer walls provided isolation and privacy to the
inhabitants of the house. It is built out of stone and wood.
Mosques
Karadžozbegova mosque
The Karadžozbegova mosque is the most important and significant of sacred Islamic
architecture in all of Herzegovina. Completed in 1557, its designer was Kodza Mimar Sinan,
a great Ottoman architect. The mosque is open to visitors.
This precious mosque was built in 1617 is open to visitors. This is the only mosque with the
original wall paintings and decorations. For those willing to bear the dizzy spiral to the top,
the minaret is also open to the public and is accessible from inside the mosque. The view
speaks for itself!
