INKED Literary Magazine

Sorry (not!) Sorry

Volume 1 · Issue 1 · Spring 2019

HOLY NAME OF MARY SCHOOL VALLEY STREAM, NY GRADES 6-8

June 2019
Dear Readers,

Founded this year in February 2019, INKED is a creative writing after-school club
for HNOM middle school students in grades 6-8. It guides students through the
writing process and helps them develop storytelling skills.

This first issue is a small accomplishment of the trial-and-error process that ran
our club in its opening year. It wouldn’t have been possible without the flexibility
and unrelenting enthusiasm of all club members. We were inspired by “This is Just
to Say,” by William Carlos Williams. After identifying the central idea of each
stanza and analyzing the tone of the 1938 masterpiece about an unashamed food
thief, we created our own false apology poems. We brainstormed common petty
offenses to make our voices relatable, drafted and revised by adding sensory
details and alliteration, and peer edited (especially for proper noun
capitalization!) with red pens and proofreading marks.

Therefore, we wish you a thrilling summer of stolen s’mores, sneak-outs, and

splashes! You can be sure to see us again in the 2019-2020 academic year! Enjoy!

This is Just to Say
by Makayla N. Fernando

I have eaten
the Doritos
that were in
your lunchbox

which you probably

were ready
to eat
for lunch

Forgive me
they were really good
so crunchy, crisp,
and so spicy
This is Just to Say
by Jaylaan J. Zephir

I shut the door

on you
while leaving the
classroom

and you
were minding
your own busienss
while walking behind me

Please forgive me
I was laughing
hysterically
at your horrid face
This is Just to Say
by Samuel Camulaire

I have eaten your

Oreos that
were in your
container

and you were probably

saving them
for a
good T.V. show

Forgive me
but they were such
clean-cut, circular, chocolately
cookies
This is Just to Say
by Ethan Yu

To be published pending retrieval from classroom.

This is Just to Say
by Sophia A. Conde

I have left
your Takis and Pepsi
in my house
for Inked

so now
your stomach
groans in
hunger and thirst

Forgive me
but your smile was as funny
as a comedian transitioning from
a smile to a frown
This is Just to Say
by Jalen M. Chambers

I played on my
xbox for hours and hours
and didn’t give you
a chance

You were being

bothersome
so I misleadingly said,
“You can go in advance.”

To see your perplexed face

was just hiliarious
because I unplugged the console
when I finally logged off
This is Just to Say
by Dominik M. Kurek

I jumped
into a pool
with a forced
splash

even though you wanted

to keep your
hair
dry for the day

Forgive me
for laughing underwater
and squeezing my eyes so tight
that my goggles filled with water
This is Just to Say
by Jeremiah D. Farnum

I know what you are saying

about how I
stole your
cheeseburger and fries

even though
you had
already paid
for them

But the burger

was so juicy,
the bread – so soft,
and the cheese – so tangy
This is Just to Say
by Klaudia Kurek

I snuck out
at 2:00 AM
so dark, lonely, and deadly
while you were asleep

I could have gotten lost

and made you worry
I could have gotten hurt
and you wouldn’t have known

Forgive me
I had so much fun
Next time,
I’ll sneak out at 1:00
