Based off 2015-2016 year I know my students have experience with identifying cause and to back table to work with me on
effect in sentences and sometimes in short passages. I know I need to push them with more just identifying cause and effect in
rigorous texts (ISTEP prep) short sentences.

When solving word problems we ask the students to justify their answers. We want to know WE DO:

 First I’m going to model finding examples in a text using keywords.


 Next, you’ll help me find examples in a text.
 Then you can break off into groups to identify and match the cause and effects in your
own passages.
 Finally, we’ll work independently on our own passages.

I Do (model): 7mins
Students come to the carpet to watch model. Have students generate a question to ask you
about your thinking or for clarification.
 Read passage making marks on passage with C and E. Set a goal for how many you
can find. (Step out and ask for questions.)
 Model justification. Make error of just saying this text is cause and effect because I
saw a keyword. (Students should say you need text evidence. REFER BACK TO
OBJECTIVE.)
 Allow students to turn and talk and then share out TAG feedback for model.

We Do (grouping): 20-25 mins


Remind students we are moving into the WE DO. It’ll be their turn to play around with cause
and effect.Students will work in groups to read their part of the passage and mark up the
text with cause and effect.
 Guided: Have 3 students read aloud their portion of the guided passage. As a class
identify the example of cause and effect with justification on each card.
 Introduce TAG Feedback. Choose 2 students to model giving TAG feedback.
 Students move to groups. Set timer and expectations. Circulate.
Last 10 mins of class: Call students back together. “Fist to four how do you feel about
identify cause and effect in a nonfiction passage using text evidence?
