THE “I” IN THE “OTHER”

A Team Building Activity Developed for Psych 116: Group Dynamics

Objectives of the Activity:

Generally, the activity aims to solidify the cohesiveness of teams as an
interdependent effort towards becoming a successful team. Specifically, it targets to:
1. Develop coordinated effort among members of the team;
2. Develop strategic leadership among the members of the team;
3. Allow members to value the essence of the oneness as a distinguishing
characteristic of a team; and
4. Build stronger relationship between and among members of the team.

Introduction:
A team consists of interdependent workers with complementary skills working
toward a share goal (Riggio, 2013). In a team, there are different roles a member has to
play with the goal of maintaining coordinated effort all throughout the existence of the
team. As what Gestalt psychology holds prime, a team as a whole is greater than the
sum of individual efforts. However, a team has the tendency to lose its essence and
consequently fail; may be attributable to weak leadership as evidenced by inability to
reduce conflict. Conflicts may arise because of self-interests and uncoordinated effort
among members.

Ground Rules:
1. All electronic gadgets (cellphones) should kept in the bags.
2. While performing the activity, no one is allowed to take a break. Participants are
requested to attend the activity with full stomach.
3. Since the activity requires physical movements, participants who have medical
conditions that require minimal physical movement may not participate in the
activity.
4. All participants must maintain the cleanliness of the venue. Be responsible of your
designated area.
5. Shouting while the activity is ongoing is strongly discouraged as it may disrupt
other classes.
6. Please be responsible of your belongings. Those who are not able to participate
in the activity would be requested to safe keep them.

Materials:
The materials needed (and or equipment) are the following:
1. Eggs (16 pcs) 4. Bowls (4 pcs)
2. Paper plates (for each member) 5. Timer
3. Cling film wrap (for the eggs)

Activity
Prior to the activity, the team leader lets the class form their teams (retain the old
groupings). She then lays the ground rules for the activity. After the teams have
assembled, the following procedures are to be conducted:

1. For eliminating extraneous variables that may arise due to unequal number of
members for each team, a standard number would be set upon suggestion of
the participants. A probable number would be six (6) members for each team.
Excess members are then asked to cheer for the teams while they are doing the
activity.
2. Members of the BiosPhilos team distribute to each team pieces of paper plates,
ensuring that each member one two paper plates. Assuming that there are six
(6) members within the team, a team should have twelve (12) paper plates.
3. The members of the BiosPhilos team to each team then distribute four eggs. Each
team should come up with four values that they uphold within their group. Each
value should be written on the eggs.
4. Each team has a total of four eggs and twelve (12) paper plates as assumed
earlier.
5. The four teams proceed to the starting point of the race, positioned at the
façade of Gate 1 of the University of the Cordilleras.
6. Using the paper plates (in the formation of a semi-tunnel), they must transport the
four eggs to the end point (positioned at the classroom N4001). The eggs must
not in any way crack nor break and must be continuously rolling. While doing
this, members of the BiosPhilos team would distract the four teams by telling
stories with them, complimenting them, noticing the color of their shirt, etc. The
objective is to lead the four teams astray from their objective to transport the four
eggs to the end point in the soonest time possible without breaking them.
7. No member is allowed to touch any of the four eggs once it is on the paper
plates (turned into a semi-tunnel). Any team who committed this would restart
the race from the starting point.

8. For the purpose of this module, it would be a race to motivate them to move.
The team who successfully transported all the four eggs to the end without signs
of crack at the least possible time will be the winner. But, here’s the catch, all
teams should work as one team (the bigger team) to transport at least four eggs
from the given sixteen eggs.

Processing Questions
1. How did you feel about the activity?
2. How did you react when an egg was broken?
3. What did you feel when an egg was broken? Why?
4. What did you do when almost all of your eggs were broken?
5. How should a team handle distractions?
6. What is important in solving interpersonal conflict within a team?

Lecture Points
• Focus on your goal. As a team, always vertically align yourselves with the goal or
purpose. After determining your goal, plan and strategize on what to do. List the
steps on how to arrive to the finish line that is, achieving your goals as a team.
• Shared Ownership. All members must contribute their skills and talents to the
development of a fully functioning team. Each member should understand his or
her responsibilities and feel a sense of belonging to the team.
• Support System. Encourage and assist each other. Always put out your helping
hand to each of the members in your team.
• Have Fun. It’s always good to have fun. A warm relationship with each member
leads to a more interesting and relaxing working environment. Celebrate your
successes and use them as your turning point towards realizing your ultimate
objective.
• Embrace Diversity. Being in team does not always mean that diversity should be
sacrificed. A team can always uphold unity in diversity. Use this diversity to the
advantage of your team.

Learnings and Insights

It is always a challenge to deliver results when in a team. To be able to do this, a
team must always consider their team members’ skills, abilities, and current conditions.
Sometimes, having fun while working is good and it helps to lessen the tension. Being
the first does not always mean that your team is the best. What’s more important is that
your team have ensured that each member is respected and cared for.

Synthesis and Integration

On the left side of a piece of paper, draw what your team looks at the present moment
with respect to its development and working relationship. On the right side of the paper,
draw what you want your team would look like. List what you need to do to achieve
this.

Outcome
After the activity, the members have now built a sense of belongingness to their teams,
developed a working relationship with each other, and have started to glue themselves
with each other. These are all important in their future activities as they now know how to
value their team and their team members.
