Actually, what is motivation? The meaning of Motivation is an encouragement or reason that becomes
the basis of a person's spirit to do something to achieve certain goals. The meaning of motivation can
also be defined as all things that cause encouragement or enthusiasm in someone to do something.

Motivation can come from within yourself or from others. With the motivation, someone can do
something enthusiastically. There are many things that motivate someone to do something in their lives.
However, in general there are two types of motivation, namely intrinsic motivation and extrinsic
motivation :

1. Intrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic motivation has been studied since the early 1970s. Intrinsic motivation is the desire to
find new things and new challenges, to analyze one’s capacity, to observe and to gain knowledge
( Ryan, R. M.; Deci, E. L., 2002, pp. 68 – 78 ). The meaning of intrinsic motivation is the desire of
someone to do something, which is caused by a push factor that comes from within themselves without
being influenced by others because of the desire to achieve certain goals.

For example, someone is motivated to work to get income so that they can fulfill their daily needs.

Some things included in internal factors are:

- Self-esteem and Achievement, namely motivation in a person to develop creativity and mobilize energy
to achieve achievements that increase self-esteem.

- Needs, each individual has needs in his life so that the person becomes motivated to do something to
meet his life needs.

- Hope, which is something that someone wants to achieve in the future that affects the subjective
attitude and feelings of that person.

- Responsibility, namely motivation in a person to work well and carefully to produce something quality.

- Job satisfaction, which is motivation in a person because they can do a certain job.
2. Extrinsic Motivation

Definition of extrinsic motivation is the desire of someone to do something caused by a factor of

encouragement from outside themselves to achieve a goal that benefits him.

For example, someone motivated to work harder because of the opportunities provided by the company
to improve careers to outstanding employees.

Some of the things included in external factors are:

- The type and nature of work, which is a drive within a person to work on the type and nature of a
particular job. This condition is also influenced by the amount of rewards earned on the job.

- Working group, which is an organization where someone works to earn income for their life needs.

- Working conditions, which are circumstances in which a person works in accordance with his
expectations (conducive) so that he can work well.

- Work safety and security, namely the protection provided by the organization for guaranteeing the
safety and safety of a person at work.

- Interpersonal relationships, namely relationships between peers, with superiors, and with
subordinates. In this case, everyone wants to be respected and valued in the organization so as to create
a harmonious working atmosphere.

In english there are four very important skills, namely writing skill, speaking skill, reading skill
and the last is listening skill. in this study discussing the shopkeepers in the Mekong River,
Thailand who started speaking English. in the current era English is a language that we must
know, because from all over the world if you want to go to a country for example in Thailand
they can only communicate in English, so the Thai people decide to speak English as their
everyday language. besides, speaking English is very beneficial for shopkeepers in the Mekong
River. just like when dealing in goods, so tourists don't feel confused in Thai, which everyone
rarely knows.

Speaking english is the most difficult language for some people. But, when we speak, we create a
meaningful text. In communication, we can find the speaker, listener, message and feed back.
Speaking of progress, it’s very motivating to keep a record of what you’ve accomplished. Get a
notebook, and after every study session write down the date and a summary of “what I learned
today.” This results in three things:
- the act of writing it down helps reinforce it in your memory;

- seeing the notebook fill up with knowledge encourages you that you are learning a lot and
making progress;

- having the notebook makes it easy to go back and review things you’ve studied previously.

in this way people can speak English more easily and communicate with other countries. This makes
student studying more enjoyable and more meaningful, because student know that what are doing is
useful and that you students making real progress.
