Please read each of the following instructions carefully before attempting questions :

Answer must be written in ENGLISH only.

There are EIGHT questions divided in TWO sections.

Condidate has to attempt FIVE questions in all.

Questions no. 1 and 5 are compulsory and out of the remaining THREE are to be attempted
choosing at least ONE question from each section.

The number of marks carried by a question / part is indicated against it.

Answers must be written in the medium authorized in the Admission Certificate which must be stated
clearly on the cover of this Question-cum-Answer (QCA) Booklet in the space provided. No marks
will be given for answers written in a medium other than the authorized one.

Wherever any assumptions are made for answering a question, they must be clearly indicated.
Diagrams / figures, wherever required, shall be drawn in the space provided for answering the
question itself.

Unless otherwise mentioned, symbols and notations carry their usual standard meanings. Attempt of
questions shall be counted in sequential order. Unless struck off, attempt of a question shall be
counted even if attempted partly. Any page or portion of the page left blank in the Question-cum-

1.(a) What is assumption made in ultimate method of design of


eccentric connection? Explain.

1.(b)(i) Briefly describe the process of “Cavitation” in fluids.

1.(b)(ii) Two coaxial glass tubes forming an annular with small
gap are immersed in clear water. The inner and outer
radii of the annular are ri & r0 respectively. What is the
capillary rise of water in the annular. If  is the surface
tension of water in contact with air (  = density of water)

1.(c) Water flows in a triangular channel of side slope 1
horizontal : 1 vertical and longitudinal slope of 0.001.
Determine whether the channel is mild, steep or critical
when a discharge of 0.2 m3/s flows through it. Assume
Manning’s n = 0.015. For what range of depths will the
profile of water surface be of type 1, 2 or 3 curve?

1.(d) Laminar flow of a fluid of viscosity 0.883 Ns/m2 and specific
gravity 1.26 occurs between a pair of parallel plates of
extensive width, inclined at 45° to the horizontal, the plates
being 10 mm apart. The upper plate moves with a velocity
of 1.5 m/s relative to the lower plate and in a direction
opposite to the fluid flow. Pressure gauges mounted at
two points 1 m vertically apart on the upper plate record
pressures of 245 kN/m2 and 78.5 kN/m2 respectively.
Determine the velocity and shear stress distribution
between the plates, the maximum flow velocity and the
shear stress on the upper plate.

1. (e) The maximum normal stress and the maximum shear


stress analysed for a shaft of 150 mm diameter under
combined bending and torsion were found to be 120 MN/m2
and 80 MN/m2 respectively.
(a) Find the bending moment and torque to which the
shaft is subjected.
(b) If the maximum shear stress be limited to 100 MN/m2,
find by how much the torque can be increased if the
bending moment is kept constant.

2(a) A double cover butt joint, is to be provided for connecting
two 12 mm and 20 mm thick plates suitable width in
grade Fe 410 carrying tensile load of 800 kN. Design the
joint using 20 mm nominal diameter black bolts of grade
4.6 for the connection.

2.(c) (i) A rotating viscometer has two cylinders. The radius of
inner fixed cylinder is R1 and the radius of the outer
rotating cylinder is R2. This viscometer is used for the

measurement of the viscosity. Derive an expression for


the viscosity in terms of the torque acting on the inner
cylinder of height L, gap between the bottom of two
cylinders b, and the angular speed  .

briefly.

3.(a)(i) Sketch the profile :

3.(a)(ii) Water flows in a channel of the shape of isosceles triangle
of bed width ‘a’ and sides making an angle of 45° with the
bed. Determine the relation between depth of flow ‘d’ and
the bed width ‘a’ for maximum velocity and for maximum
discharge condition. Use manning’s formula and note that
‘d’ is less than 0.50a.

3.(b) Design an unequal angle member to support factored
tensile strength 425 kN. The member is connected with 20
mm gusset plate. Design angle section using lug angle.
grade of bolt 4.6 and diameter = 20 mm. Use ISA 125 ×
95 × 10 mm with 125 mm leg connected and ISA 90 × 90
× 6 as lug angle, and edge distance = 40 mm and pitch =

3.(c) A square hollow section is connected to the flanges of
ISMB 600 as shown in the above figure. The bracket is

4.(b) The design specifications of a 2m long solid circular
transmission shaft require that the angle of twist of the
shaft not exceed 3° when a torque of 9 KN-m is applied.

same material are subjected to torsion. The tube and bar
have the same cross-sectional area and the same length.
What is the ratio of the strain energy U1, in the tube to

5(c) A hydraulic jump occurs in a V-shaped channel having


sides sloping at 45°. Derive an equation relating the two
depths and the flow rate.
If the depths before and after the jump in the above
channel are 0.50m and 1.0m, find out the flow rate and
obtain the Froude numbers before and after the jump.

5.(d) According to IS 800 : 2007, what are the factors that
affecting the effective net area? explain.

5.(e) A boundary layer develops along the walls of a rectangular
wind tunnel. The air is at 20°C and at atmospheric
pressure. The boundary layer starts upstream of the
contraction and grows into the test section. By the time it
reaches the test section, the boundary layer is fully
turbulent. The boundary layer profile and its thickness
are measured at both the beginning (x = x1) and at the
end (x = x2) of the bottom wall of the wind tunnel test
section. The test section is 1.8 m long and 0.50 m wide
(into the page in the Fig.). The following measurements
are made:

At both locations the boundary layer profile fits better to
a one-eighth-power law approximation than to the standard
one-seventh-power law approximation,

rectangular channel 2m deep and 3m wide in which 5.5
m3/s are flowing at a depth of 1.30m. Will the channel
overflow? Assuming the sides of the channel to be
sufficiently high to prevent it from overflowing, what will
be the velocity of the surge produced?

7. (a) The composite beam shown is formed by bonding together
a brass rod and an aluminium rod of semicircular cross-
sections. The modulus of elasticity is 100 GPa for the
brass and 70 GPa for the aluminium. Knowing that the
composite beam is bent about a horizontal axis by couples
of moment 900 N-m, determine the maximum stress (a) in
the brass, (b) in the aluminium.

7.(c)(i) An oil having a viscosity of 0.0098 kgf second per square metre and
a specific gravity of 1.59 flows through a horizontal pipe of
5 centimeter diameter with a pressure drop of 0.06 kgf per square
centimeter per meter length of the pipe. Determine (i) the rate of flow
in kilograms per minute, (ii) the shear stress at the pipe wall, (iii) the
total drag for 100-metre length of the pipe and (iv) the power required
for the 100 metre length of the pipe to maintain the flow.

if 8 mm welds are used.

8.(b)(i) The normal depth of flow of water, in a rectangular channel
1.5 m wide, is one metre. The bed slope of the channel is
0.0006 and Manning’s roughness coefficient n = 0.012.
Find the critical depth. At a certain section of the same
channel the depth is 0.92 m while at a second section the
depth is 0.86 m. Find the distance between the two sections
(use one reach in the calculations). Also find whether the
section is located downstream or upstream with respect to
the first section.
