Performance and Traditional Assessments

This article discusses the process in which performance based assessment is implemented in

some STEM high school informing the process and benefits from using performance based

assessments. According to the article the performance based assessment consisted of one or

multiple activities required to show understanding and mastery of specific learning objectives.

The subjects included in the performance based assessment study where all science based

including; “Biology, Chemistry, Earth/Environmental Science, Physical Science, and Physics”

(Ernst, Li, 2017). The objective included multiple activities and sub activities as to create a

thorough assessment.

After completing the MAT 674 course Differentiated Instruction I believe that performance

based assessments should be implemented whenever possible in efforts to properly assess all

learning styles. In my short experience many students have struggled with the traditional pen and

paper assessment techniques. Providing students with alternative assessments option while

yielding same learning outcomes I believe will give students the option to express themselves

most accurately with given their preference.

The benefit from having performance based assessments is that it allow students more interaction

with the content material which I believe will help with content retention for long term. I have

noticed that many students in high schools have altered their study habits for short term

knowledge as to perform well on traditional assessments structures thus lacking depth in

understanding of the content material.

In conclusion the transition from traditional based assessments to performance based

assessments I believe will be the future of education. As previously mentioned the ability for

students to interact with content material through performance based assessments will help in

their retention.
