Abstract
This literary review identifies the strategies in performance based assessments, discussing the
strategies and thought process involved in them and their overall objectives. It also compares
student’s preference and learning styles as it pertains to how they retain information.

This article discusses the process in which performance based assessment is implemented in
some STEM high school informing the process and benefits from using performance based
assessments. According to the article the performance based assessment consisted of one or
multiple activities required to show understanding and mastery of specific learning objectives.
The subjects included in the performance based assessment study where all science based
(Ernst, Li, 2017). The objective included multiple activities and sub activities as to create a
thorough assessment.
After completing the MAT 674 course Differentiated Instruction I believe that performance
based assessments should be implemented whenever possible in efforts to properly assess all
learning styles. In my short experience many students have struggled with the traditional pen and
paper assessment techniques. Providing students with alternative assessments option while
yielding same learning outcomes I believe will give students the option to express themselves
The benefit from having performance based assessments is that it allow students more interaction
with the content material which I believe will help with content retention for long term. I have
noticed that many students in high schools have altered their study habits for short term
assessments I believe will be the future of education. As previously mentioned the ability for

students to interact with content material through performance based assessments will help in
their retention.
