1. A solid rectangular block has a square base of side 𝑥 cm and a height of 𝑦 cm. The total
surface area of the rectangular block is 120 cm² and the total length of the 12 edges is 54.
Show that 𝑥 2 − 9𝑥 + 20 = 0 and find the possible values of 𝑥 and 𝑦.
Answers:𝑥=______________________
𝑦=______________________ [5]

2. Express 22𝑥 = 22+𝑥 + 21 as a quadratic equation in 2𝑥 and hence, find, correct to 2 decimal
places, the value of 𝑥 which satisfies the equation 22𝑥 = 22+𝑥 + 21.
Answer:𝑥=_______________________ [6]

3. Baby food is heated in a microwave to a temperature of 80°C. It subsequently cools in
such a way that its temperature, T°C, t minutes after removal from the microwave is
given by 𝑇 = 20 + 𝐴𝑒 −𝑘𝑡 .
(a) Show that A=60
(b) Find the value of k, correct to 3 significant figures.
(c) A baby should only be given this food when the temperature of the food is less than
40°C. Determine, with working, whether it is safe to give this food 4 minutes after
removal from the microwave.

4. The diagram shows two intersecting circles, C1 and C2, with centres P and Q
respectively. The point R lies on both circles and the line PR is a tangent to C2. A line L
passes through Q. The point E lies on C2. The line PE is perpendicular to L and intersects
C2 at A, C1 at B and L at D.
(a) By considering triangles QAD and QED, show that AD=ED. [4]
(b) Show that PD²-AD²=PA×PE. [3]
(c) Hence, show that PD²-AD²=PB². [2]
