AREA OF PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION: All Catholic Schools, to be proposed

first at SJDEFI

BUDGET: 25,000

II. PROJECT BACKGROUND

The physical therapy students of San Juan De Dios Educational Foundation

Inc., are one of the front liners in embodying its core values. Since the institution does not

only aim to provide quality education but to also provide good values to their globally com-

petent students, it is deemed necessary to provide them with knowledge on what is happen-

ing in their community. Premarital sex refers to sexual activity practiced by persons who

are unmarried. The Bible refers to premarital sex as fornication. Fornication is sexual inter-

course between people who are not married to each other. The only distinction the Bible

1
makes between premarital sex and adultery is that adultery involves married persons while

fornication involves those who are unmarried. Premarital sex is just as much of a sin as

adultery and all other forms of sexual immorality. They all involve having sexual relations

with someone you are not married to. (Worldview, 2016)

Bandura (1971) states in his article, Adolescence is a stage which human beings

face once throughout a lifetime. This stage serves as a threshold for biological, physical,

psychological and social developments which are accompanied by either positive or nega-

tive behaviours depending on the environment that the child is brought-up. According to

Population Reference Burea (2004), Younger people often face with strong social, peer and

cultural pressure to engage in premarital sex. As a result of this, significant numbers of

adolescents are involved in sexual activities at an early age. Fikadu (2000) states that The

early sexual activity of young people can expose them to the risk of unintended pregnancy,

early marriage, abortion and STIs/HIV/AIDS. In addition, unwanted pregnancy among fe-

male students may lead to school dropout, illegal and unsafe abortion, even death (World

Bank, 2005).

According to WHO (2013), Many adolescents face pressures to use alcohol,

cigarettes, or other drugs and to initiate sexual relationships at earlier ages, putting them-

selves at high risk for intentional and unintentional injuries and risky sexual behaviours.

Associations between sexual activity and substance use have been a consistent research

2
finding and these practices may influence them to engage in premarital sex and its compli-

cations (Adeoye et al., 2012)

A new study on fertility and sexuality among young Filipinos has linked early

sex among millennials to early exposure to the Internet and social media. According to

Commission on Population executive director Juan Perez III, that one out of three girls and

boys who are 15 to 19 years of age have engaged in premarital sex.

The prevalence of pre-marital sex has increased in both developed and develop-

ing countries. In addition, 32% of young Filipinos aged 15-24 had engaged in sex before

marriage, up from 23% reported a decade ago. This finding came from the Young Adult

Fertility Study (2013). It is very common in teenagers wherein social attitudes to premarital

sex have changed over time as has the prevalence of premarital sex in various societies.

Among developed countries minorities considered sex between unmarried

adults to be morally unacceptable. In France, Germany and Spain, for example, less than

10 percent said that sex between unmarried adults is unacceptable. And in Japan, Russia

and the United States the proportions of those who said premarital sex is morally unac-

ceptable were less than one third (Chamie, 2018).

In contrast to the views undeveloped countries, large majorities in most devel-

oping countries said that sex between unmarried adults is morally unacceptable. Among

those countries were some of the most populous, including China (58 percent), Egypt (90

3
percent), India (67 percent), Indonesia (97 percent), Nigeria (77 percent), Pakistan (94 per-

cent) and the Philippines (71 percent), (Chamie, 2018).

Take in consideration when deciding about premarital sex is safety. Did you

know that 50% of the people who currently have HIV are between the ages of 15 and 24?1

Using a condom only reduces the risk of contracting HIV by 85%. Condoms do not signif-

icantly reduce the risk of contracting other sexually transmitted diseases. Take these statis-

tics into consideration when making your decision. After engaging in premarital sex, many

people express feelings of guilt, embarrassment, distrust, resentment, lack of respect, ten-

sion ( World view, 2016).

III. PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Prevention on premarital sex and its dangers to young teenagers proposed by the

BSPT1 purports to open an avenue in raising realization to the immorality of premarital sex
