XIV. ONGOING RESEARCH ACTIVITY

My primary research interest includes machine learning and their applications in computer vision and signal
processing. I use intelligent algorithms to do automated analysis of large data sets to extract patterns which
can be used to predict and make decision for real world applications.

At present I am associated with the following research activities:

3D RNA structure Prediction: I am eyeing at applying machine learning algorithms on structural biology,
particularly for 3D-RNA structure prediction. Some of these challenging issues are: Firstly, how do these
RNA molecules fold into unique structures. Secondly, identifying the roles played by small molecules and
ligand. Experimental methods such as X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, fluorescence etc. are
highly time consuming and expert obligated. Apart from canonical watson-creek base pairs and energy
minimization 3D folding requires probing of behavior of loops, junctions and associated elements which
implicates a large search space. RNA structure-prediction or RNA folding can be formulated as an
optimization problem. Increasing availability of known RNA structures in current RNA databases,
emergence of new classes of RNAs with regulatory functions such as riboswitches, non-coding RNAs have
further highlighted this unsolved problem.

Brain state analysis by using EEG signal: Over the last few decades, the use of
electroencephalography (EEG) signals for motor imagery based brain-computer interface (MI-BCI) has
gained widespread attention. Apart from BCI EEGs are often used for disease diagnosis, as biometrics,
monitoring attention or stress, etc. Aim of my research is to develop methodologies for understanding
functional EEG and come up with guidelines for acoustic neuromodulator therapy which can improve
learning ability. The main source of EEG signal is an electric activity of synapse – that dispatches
electromagnetic pulse to the environment during excitation. A different perspective on this issue includes
uniqueness and difference in the signal for each individual subject for analogous excitations. This research
is about EEG guided “Tonal Tinnitus Therapy” for stress release which can help augmenting learning
ability in children suffering from dyslexia. Goal of this project is to study the impact of various hums, music
and associated spectral vibrations on brain waves. Proper acoustic tone is expected to lower down the
stress prone beta brain waves and convert the accompanying energy into alpha state dynamically. As a
consequence brain can be at an ideal condition and learn or perform more elaborate tasks, and do better.

Deformable Image Segmentation:

Last but not the least recently I have been associated with and gotten exposed to Brachytherapy Research
by a group of doctors from Tata Memorial Hospital. The goal of radiation therapy (brachytherapy) is to
deliver a curative dose of radiation to the cancer while limiting the dose, and therefore reducing the risk of
complications, to normal surrounding organs such as the rectum, bowel and bladder. This requires precise
segmentation of 3D deformable organs from the MRI data. Goal of this research is to apply deformable
image registration for radiation therapy.

Motion and GAIT Analysis

In Collaboration with Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Engineering Center, Marquette University,
Milwaukee, WI, USA:

Goal of this research collaboration is to perform GAIT or motion analyse which may help people suffering
from cerebral palsy, myelomeningocele, clubfoot, osteogenesis imperfect, limb deformities, etc. Gait
analysis provides a useful snapshot of what physical conditions exist that can impede movements, why
these conditions exist, and what treatments may help a person maximize their movement and comfort. It
can also identify root causes for mobility issues and pain that vary from person to person. Based on the
results of gait analysis, several surgical and non-surgical interventions may be recommended. A child’s
physical therapy regimen can be adjusted and improved; new bracing or assistive equipment may be
added to help a child move. The Three Dimensional Gait Analysis (3DGA) has proven to be a particularly
powerful instrument to explicitly quantify joint kinematics and kinetics of the gait in children with Cerebral
Palsy. 3DGA involves the use of video and infra-red cameras to record a person walking along a five metre
walkway. Reflective dots are applied to the joints at predetermined intervals to capture information on body
segment movement during gait and a force platform is positioned in the middle of the walkway to collect
information on the Ground Reaction Force (GRF) during stance phase.
