Intellectual Interests
Education:

● Tendency to seek higher education (masters degree) due to college historically being six years.
● Higher education is free in the Czech language, studying in a foreign language is more expensive, ranging
from “0 - 22,350 USD per year” (Centre for International Cooperation in Education).
● According to barista Annita, Czech high schools are specialized, such as economics school, technology,
the arts, etc. She said it was difficult to choose. “I went for economics” she says, “and now I work as a
barista”.

Jobs:

● In 2018, the amount of people receiving jobs increased throughout the year (Trading Economics).
● Jan, a restaurant employee, says Czechs enjoy discussing future job opportunities with their peers, and
most young people come to Prague to gain work experience, not to stay here for a long time.
● Jobs high in demand are low-skill production jobs, IT professionals, engineering specialists, and various
business departments such as HR, finance, logistics, etc (These Are The Jobs, 2018).
Intellectual Interests Cntd.
Politics:

● Czech politics are corrupt and filled with scandal, like Prime Minister Babis being
accused of embezzling 50m koruna (The Economist).
● The Czechs will discuss politics casually, like over a beer or at the dinner table (Scott).
● This past weekend, I observed a large protest against the Prime Minister taking place in
Wenceslas Square in hope of condemning Babis and bringing awareness to his crimes.
● According to Barbora, most young people agree that Prime Minister Babis is not good,
but some older people support him because he has improved the financial situation.
● Likewise, she says everyone knows the bad things he does yet no one in higher power
seems to care and nothing happens to him.
Formal/ Introductions and Business
● Greetings should include a firm handshake and direct eye contact, a weak
handshake means that you are weak and no direct eye contact can be taken
to mean that you are hiding something
● Remain standing until you are invited to sit down, as there might be a seat
reserved specifically for you.
● Do not address anyone by first name
● Do not try to schedule meetings on Friday afternoon, as many Czechs leave
for their country cottages after lunch, or during August, when many
businesses are closed.
Formal/ Introductions and Business Cntd.

● Do not remove your suit jacket unless the highest-ranking Czech does so first.
● When dining, always refuse second helpings the first time they are offered.
Wait for your host or hostess to insist and then accept graciously.
● Business is conducted slowly. You will have to be patient and not appear
ruffled by the strict adherence to protocol.
