Journal Entry #5
If there is anything that I have learned from the past week is that the first run tends to be
horrendous. Last week, Deja and I were fairly in sync when it came to our lesson, but we had
problems with explaining adjectives for foods. On the other hand, this week we excelled in
explaining how ordering food worked. After a long weekend in Seoul we had problems staying
in sync with each other during our lesson, because we did not prepare as well. Over these past
two weeks, our lesson plans have been exciting to teach and see how creative the students were.
I think some of the problems with our lessons have been time management. In the first
lesson, we did not give the students enough time to finish their menus. Thus, we had to give
them time to finish their menus in the second lesson. We used videos today to help them
understand, but I feel like we added too many unnecessary words in our presentation when we
explained the ordering process. It seemed like the students understood what we were explaining
to them without barely any explanation. The extra wording just made it harder for them to
understand. I also need to speak more during the class, because compared to Deja, I barely spoke
at all. I wanted to see her examples of how to explain things to the students, but then I barely
ended up speaking at all to the students. I think the amount of speaking between the two of us

I do think that we did well in explaining how ordering foods worked, though. We added
videos to our slides, some of which enunciated very clearly for the students to understand. We
also used a few other videos from shows such as SpongeBob that demonstrated the ordering
process, even if they were harder to understand. The videos that were harder to understand we
played multiple times. The students were also able to understand what to do with the worksheet
we gave them even though we did not explain it. We gave it to them right before we started the
activity, and they managed to fill it out and write a review with no explanation. I feel like the
videos really helped them understand what was going on, so we did not have to explain other
aspects of the lesson as much. Those were our best parts of the lesson.
However, I do believe that there is still much to improve on throughout this week.
Tomorrow we are teaching last week’s lesson plan, since our lesson plan was in two parts.
Hopefully by Wednesday, though, we will be able to improve even more by getting rid of
excessive speaking and practicing more. If we do that, I think the students will be able to
understand us even more than before, and our lesson plan will get even more. I hope to be able to
improve as much as I can in the next week as we come to the end of our program in two weeks.
